SUMMARY:Fondation Prince Pierre talks
DESCRIPTION:Over the next six months\, a series of in-depth talks and debates at the Théâtre des Variétés will commemorate the centenary of cultural discussions initiated by Prince Pierre (1895-1964)\, a great patron of literature and the arts.   \nBegun by Prince Pierre in the 1920s and formalised by the creation of a foundation in his name – the Fondation Prince Pierre – by his son\, Prince Rainier III\, in 1966\, this year marks 100 years of organised cultural talks and debates in the Principality.   \nPrince Pierre was a huge supporter of the arts and literature\, and had an enthusing passion that his fellow countrymen and women would have the chance to hear from the best minds of their time. To celebrate this century of arts and learning\, his foundation is offering a Monday evening series of events at the Théâtre des Variétés between January and June.  \nIt all kicks off on 16th January when Dany Laferriere\, author of 36 books\, speaks on racism in America\, bringing together the threads of the past\, from the legacy of slavery to its impacts on today\, and how much has been overcome as well as how much still needs to be done.   \nAll discussions begin at 6.30pm. Tickets are free\, but reservations are recommended. They can be made via www.fondationprincepierre.mc.

SUMMARY:Yoshi: sake pairing event
DESCRIPTION:The only Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant on the Côte d’Azur is coming together with IWA5 Sake\, created by master of the trade Richard Geoffrey\, for a unique sake tasting experience in Monaco’s Hotel Metropole. \nThe hotel’s celebrated Yoshi restaurant has made a name for itself thanks to its exceptional Japanese cuisine and taste for offering genuine experiences\, such as the exclusive evening of delicious food paired with the sacred spirit of sake that will take place on 18th January. \nAt the event\, a tasting menu by chef Takeo Yamazaki (pictured with fellow Hotel Metropole chef Christophe Cussac) will be served alongside hot and cold sake choices from IWA5 Sake. \nThe dishes include San Remo-style gamberoni\, scallops in seared butter\, crab meatballs in chicken broth\, Wagyu beef and\, of course\, sushi and sashimi. Dessert will be candied apple with yuzu light cream and vanilla. \nIWA5 Sake was created in Toyoma\, Japan\, by the former cellar master of Dom Pérignon\, Richard Geoffroy\, who will be on hand at the event to help guests discover the nuances of this popular drink as well as to share his own personal knowledge and passion on the topic. \nWhen asked about the name\, he explains that IWA comes from the brewery\, Shiraiwa. \n“Five is a number that represents harmony\, the five senses… To me\, it means assembly\,” says Geoffrey. “My pride in this approach is not only to create an assembly of sakes\, but also of people. It’s a new quest for harmony.” \nSake is a unique beverage. Often misclassified as a wine\, it is actually a brewed drink where starch from rice is converted into sugars and then fermented into alcohol\, making it more like beer. It has a vast variety of tastes and can be sparkling\, sweet\, nutty or aged. \nThe experience costs €390 per person and reservations must be made via yoshi@metropole.com.

SUMMARY:Conference: Princess Grace Library
DESCRIPTION:The Princess Grace Irish Library is kicking off 2023 with an in-person lecture by Donough Cahill\, Executive Director of the Irish Georgian Society\, who oversees the delivery of its conservation\, education and advocacy programmes from the headquarters in Dublin. \n“For much of the twentieth century there was little official recognition or appreciation of the rich architectural heritage of Ireland’s cities\, towns and countryside\,” says the library. “Allied with the pressures of development from the 1960s onwards\, and a scarcity of public or private funding to invest in conservation works\, many buildings of architectural interest were lost forever. However\, over the decades\, attitudes changed through the efforts of organisations such as the Irish Georgian Society and\, with this\, measures were introduced to protect Ireland’s historic building stock. New legislation provided tentative protection while improved economic circumstances provided funding for essential works. Sadly\, threats remain today but there are also success stories which provide encouragement for the future. In his talk\, Donough Cahill will explore this wide-ranging topic and consider select buildings including examples demonstrating connections with the United States from the 18th century and more recent times.” \nWith a nod to the library’s theme this year ‘Irish-American influence on culture’\, he will also explain the scope of the IGS’s branch in the USA.

SUMMARY:Sainte Devote: Patron Saint's Day
DESCRIPTION:Sainte Devote\, the fourth century martyr who later became patron saint of both Monaco and Corsica\, is celebrated in the Principality on 26th and 27th January.   \nHer story is rather a gruesome one\, with the legend saying she was tortured and killed for her Christian faith on her native island of Corsica. It was reported that her mouth was crushed and she was dragged through brambles and over rocks. Eventually\, she was either put to the rack or stoned to death.   \nAfter her passing\, it was ordered that she be burnt to prevent veneration\, but her body was saved by fellow Christians and placed in a boat headed for Africa. The boat was blown off course by a storm and landed instead in Monaco.   \nA chapel was built in her honour in the hollow of the Vallon des Gaumates\, where it still stands today. It is said that flowers bloom before their seasonal time on 27th January\, her official saint’s day.   \nThis year in Monaco\, her day is marked with special tributes. In the early evening of 26th January\, the public are invited to gather on the Albert 1er embankment to watch the ceremonial arrival of the boat\, as well as to see the relics associated with the young saint. A procession will then begin\, taking the crowd to the Sainte Devote Chapel\, where a holy sacrament is performed\, before the boat is lit on fire by Prince Albert II and the Princely family in her memory. A fireworks display is then scheduled at sea off the Port of Monaco.  \nThe next morning\, the relics will be taken to the Cathedral and a high mass celebrated\, led by Archbishop of Monaco Dominique-Marie David. After the service\, another procession will take place\, this time around Monaco Ville\, while the archbishop blesses the palace\, the town and the sea.   \nAt 4pm on 27th January\, the Direction des Affaires Culturelles de Monaco has organised a concert featuring the traditional organ played by Silvano Rodi at the Eglise Sainte Dévote. Entry is free although space may be limited.
