SUMMARY:MEWS: Metaverse Entertainment World Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Metaverse Entertainment World Summit and Awards Show (MEWS)\, held under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco\, is running from 3rd to 5th May at One Monte-Carlo. On the agenda: exhibits\, networking events\, concepts\, talks and experiences designed bring the ideas of tomorrow here to us today.   \nThe organisers say it will be “a highly curated conference [with] break-out sessions\, NFT\, metaverse\, AI\, AR\, tech and immersive experiences” centred on this fast-growing world.   \nOne exhibitor is Phygicode\, a company who has labelled itself as an incubator for brand exploration. It will be showcasing a one-of-a-kind piece of clothing that will be reimagined in phygital form. Camille Louise Jewellery is partnering on the experience and will be collaborating with Phygicode to create something completely new on the fashion front.    \nA charity gala and awards show will take place on 4th May at the Hotel Hermitage to celebrate the MEWS International Metaverse Awards Winners for 2023. The new laureats\, comprised of 10 break-out metaverse and web3 talents\, will be selected by a panel of global experts including: the founder of Art Day\, Georg Bak; Martha Boeckenfeld\, the Dean of the Metaverse Academy; and the CEO of Listen Charity\, Tony Hollingsworth. Michelin-starred Yannick Alléno will provide the gourmet element of the night\, which will be punctuated by a web3 illiusionist.  \nThe basic definition of a metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social and economic connections. It is what many “in the know” believe will be the next iteration of the internet; a place where people can go and inhabit 3D virtual spaces\, having experiences they could not in the physical world. As of now\, it is not yet at the full-scale virtual reality stage\, but is still popular and habitually accessed by consumers via niche apps for entertainment and games.  \nTo be part of this exciting new world\, to buy tickets or for more information\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Petit Marché de Monaco Ville
DESCRIPTION:The vibrant new Petit Marché de Monaco Ville will be held every week\, selling a bounty of fresh produce and breathing new life into this historic\, but largely touristic\, part of the Principality. \nMonaco-Ville\, colloquially known as The Rock or Le Rocher\, is the neighbourhood that encompasses the Palace\, the cathedral and some of the oldest streets in the Principality. The Grimaldi family has resided in this section since 1297\, making it an important historic centre\, though one that is often overlooked by locals. \nEfforts to change that\, and thus revitalise the area\, are being put in motion with plans hatched by Marjorie Crovetto\, the Principality’s Delegate for Commerce\, Halls and Markets\, now coming to fruition. \nThe weekly farmer’s market\, called the Petit Marché de Monaco Ville or the Little Market of Monaco Ville\, is starting up on Friday 31st March. For now\, just one producteur of fruit and vegetables will be present. \nIt can be found between 8am and 1pm on the the Alleé Saint Jean-Paul II\, a stone’s throw from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. \nFor those who find it a challenge to make it up to the Rock\, a home delivery service has been set up by the townhall for people who reside in Monaco and need a bit of extra help transporting purchased items. It is similar to the service offered at Monaco’s two other market centres: La Condamine and the Marché de Monte-Carlo.

SUMMARY:Daniel Mulhall at Princess Grace Irish Library
DESCRIPTION:In May\, the Princess Grace Irish Library will host former Irish diplomat Danial Mulhall\, who will be looking back over his 44 years of telling Ireland’s story using W.B. Yeats and James Joyce. \nWhen fiction and reality collide\, it makes for a heady brew. This will most certainly be the case when Daniel Mulhall\, a former diplomat who held ambassadorial posts in Berlin\, London and Washington\, tells how he spent 44 years revealing the nature\, identity and long literary history of his country via the works of two renowned Irish authors.   \nThe one-night-only event is being held at the Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco on Wednesday 10th May. Entitled “Around the World with W.B. Yeats and James Joyce: A Diplomatic Odyssey”\, Mulhall will tie in his nation’s modern history with that of the past\, drawing on literary references to explain the complexities of the people\, places and events that shaped\, and continue to shape\, Ireland.   \n“Mulhall’s deployment of Joyce and Yeats around the world is a masterly example of exercising ‘soft power’ on behalf of Ireland\,” says Ted Smyth\, a former diplomat and business leader familiar with Mulhall. “Ireland might not have a large security force\, but it does have an army of fabulous writers\, poets\, musicians\, and artists who\, with our talented diplomats\, enable Ireland to punch above its weight in the international arena. Mulhall cleverly decodes all 18 episodes of James Joyce’s famous book while also providing personal and funny insights.”   \nThe lecture will take place at 7pm. SUMMARY:Monte-Carlo Fashion Week
DESCRIPTION:Monte-Carlo Fashion Week will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year with an edition featuring clothing and accessory trends that have a serious ethical and sustainable edge.  \nUnder the patronage of Princess Charlene and organised by the Monegasque Chamber of Fashion\, Monte-Carlo Fashion Week (MCFW) has gone from a local showcase to an international event in just 10 short years.   \nDesigners from around the world\, whether established or emerging\, are drawn to Monte-Carlo Fashion Week’s eco-cred as well as for its inclusiveness and diversity.   \nSHOWCASING MOANCO \nFar from just a series of catwalk shows\, MCFW is also a bigger picture event featuring fashion conferences and symposia\, socials\, cocktail parties and a fashion hub and pop-ups.   \nFor this 10th anniversary edition\, which runs from 17th to 21st May\, emblematic places around the Principality will become venues for side events and a “Fashion Map” will be given to guests to get them around.   \nThe Yacht Club of Monaco is where the Fashion Hub\, the showrooms and the conferences will be based. The new museum of the Private Collection of Cars of the Prince of Monaco will host the parades and the Grande Verrière of the Grimaldi Forum will be the site of the prestigious Fashion Awards Ceremony.  \nGREEN IS THE NEW BLACK \nWith a focus on green fashion\, the week is also a sounding board to “help to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our planet and the life in it”\, gaining prestige and attention from top designers such as Tommy Hilfiger\, Alberta Ferretti and Pauline Ducruet.    \n“Circularity is not a temporary fashion trend\, but the key to the future\, starting with the catwalk\,” says Federica Nardoni Spinetta\, the event’s creator and the president and founder of the Monegasque Chamber of Fashion. “This is the winning bet of Monte-Carlo Fashion Week\, the event that once again confirms its role as a showcase for trends and\, at the same time\, perpetuates its essence as a reference platform for circular\, ethical\, eco-sustainable and inclusive fashion.”  \nAWARDS SHOW \nIn 2016\, the Monegasque Chamber of Fashion created the Ethical and Sustainable Fashion Award to honour a brand for its engagement and contribution to raising awareness and protecting our planet by playing an active role in encouraging positive change\, supporting sustainability\, promoting a cleaner and better world for generations to come\, and of course\, by producing high-quality\, eco-friendly garments.  \nEven the award is art. It was designed by Monaco-based artist Marcos Marin and features a curvy silhouette that looks as if it should be in a gallery. This year\, the ceremony will be held at 8pm on 20th May.  \nALTRUISTIC EDGE  \nMonaco’s chic and fabulous also have a heart\, and the MCFW will\, for the seventh year running\, support the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation\, which raises public awareness about water safety; teaching children to swim and preventing unnecessary drowning deaths worldwide.   \nFor more information and the programme of events\, please click here.

SUMMARY:"Can Switzerland remain neutral?"
DESCRIPTION:A geopolitical conundrum and a foundation of modern Swiss principles\, the nation’s enduring neutrality is going under the lens at a special Club Suisse de Monaco dinner with humanitarian Alexandre Liebeskind in May.  \nOn Wednesday 17th May at 7pm in the Restaurant Horizon of the Fairmont Monte-Carlo\, Swiss national Alexandre Liebeskind will be drawing on his own experiences in the world of peacemaking and diplomacy to take on the complicated subject of Switzerland’s neutrality\, exploring “the threats\, opportunities and realities around the confederation staying neutral”.  \n“Originally imposed after Napoleon’s wars\, Switzerland’s neutrality evolved as the country realised it had more to contribute to humanity by acting as an impartial intermediary than by joining wars\,” writes the Club Suisse de Monaco on its website\, “but the very notion of neutrality is challenged whenever global powers deem they are leading just wars… Now\, with the war in Ukraine polarising world powers\, neutrality is seen as veiled sympathy for Russia by NATO and its allies… As the conflict comes closer to home\, neutrality is again being challenged within Switzerland itself. Some consider it cowardice. Others see it as vital – or contrary – to the nation’s interest.”  \nAs “there is no absolute truth in ethical dilemmas”\, a question-and-answer session will complement Liebeskind’s discourse on the topic.   \nAndreas Maager\, the Consul General of Switzerland in Marseille\, will be attending the event\, which is open to members and non-members alike for €145\, including a three-course meal.   \nFor further information\, please click here.  \n  \nDo you have an event in Monaco or the French Riviera that you would like us to include in our What’s On section and events calendar?

SUMMARY:Le Grand Bleu open-air cinema
DESCRIPTION:Sea\, stars and cinema await at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort’s open-air screening evening of Le Grand Bleu in May.   \nMonte-Carlo Bay will host a special al fresco evening of cinema beneath the stars as part of the ongoing “The Sea is Green” programme.   \nGuests will be immersed in comfort as they are seated in deckchairs near the lagoon and treated to a finger food menu featuring the “best of the sea” in a street food style to watch a screening of the 1988 cult classic Le Grand Bleu by celebrated director Luc Besson.   \nConsidered one of the most beautiful films ever made\, the story is a heavily fictionalised drama about a rivalry between real-life free divers Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca\, who both set “no limits” deep diving records\, going below 100 metres without the use of any breathing equipment. Though they compete against each other to see who can go deeper and stay under longest\, it is not contentious\, and the pair are friends\, though neither can resist the lure of trying to outdo the other\, making for a seriously dangerous game.  \nThe story is gripping\, but it is the underwater photography\, which is visually astonishing\, and the emotionally intense content that hooked people in back when it was first released.   \nDoors open at 7.30pm and the cost is €65 for adults and €35 for children under 12. This includes the film plus a main dish and dessert from the menu.   \nTicket are required and can be purchased online here.
