Eurostar announces strike

eurostarA strike has been announced on the Eurostar cross-channel service for the weekends of August 12 to 15 and August 27 to 29. The decision was announced on Wednesday by the British transport workers union (RMT), which claims that working conditions are not acceptable.

A Eurostar spokesman said that passengers who had already booked on the affected days would still be able to travel, although there may be some small changes to their schedule. Passengers would be notified of any changes in advance, Eurostar said.

A union spokesman said that management was not respecting an agreement on working conditions made in 2008. “Our members have the right to a balance between their work and their private lives. Eurostar must come to the negotiating table with proposals that respect the previous agreement,” the union said.

About 80 union members are affected by the strike.

Organisers of TEDxMonteCarlo were special guests of MonacoUSA on Tuesday evening at Amber Summer. More than a dozen speakers from around the world, as well as from the principality, will participate in a TEDx conference in Monaco on November 26.

TEDx is a global movement devoted to bringing Ideas Worth Spreading to communities around the globe through independently organised TED-like events. Nearly 200 countries host TEDx events and videos of the most inspiring talks about technology, entertainment and design (TED) are posted on the internet, with more than 1.4 billion views to date.

According to MonacoUSA Director Annette Anderson, the November 26 event will be a prestigious event with global exposure and will reinforce Monaco’s message that the Principality and its residents are so much more than the stereotyped “bling and ker-ching!” image portrayed by the media.

Former Porto, Real Madrid and Chelsea star Ricardo Carvalho has been told by AS Monaco that he is surplus to requirements. The 38-year-old central defender won Euro 2016 with Portugal this summer, but Monaco are rebuilding and have decided against prolonging his three-year stay there.
“Concerning Ricardo Carvalho, we have had talks and agreed there will be no contract extension,” the club’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev said. “He’s been huge for us but the time has come to move on.”
Monaco have signed three defenders over the summer in Polish international central defender Kamil Glik, up-and-coming left-back Benjamin Mendy, 21, from Marseille, and pipped Arsenal to the signature of Lille’s Djibril Sidibe. Carvalho came to prominence at Porto where he helped win the 2003 UEFA Cup and the 2004 Champions League under Jose Mourinho, who he then followed to Chelsea and later to Real Madrid.

UKSA scholarship in honour of Bosun Will Black

Six years ago during the Monaco Yacht Show, Bosun Will Black of the 183-foot (56m) Perini Navi M/Y Burrasca was involved in a tender accident and went missing. His family has recently started a campaign to raise money for a scholarship in his name at the UKSA in England.
“Many friends at the time wanted to help and raise money in his name but to be honest it has taken this long to think clearly about being able to do this,” his family explained on the fundraising page. “We now are doing something positive in his name within the maritime industry in which William found a home for his spirit of adventure,” the-triton.com reports.
Mr Black trained at UKSA, a sailing academy and youth-centred charity. His scholarship will help “new sailors who otherwise might not be able to enter the industry,” his family’s page said. “This is a way for Will’s name to live on and give back to the industry he so loved.”
The page accepts direct donations, but also other fundraising efforts, such as cycling or running races. The campaign began in July to mark Mr Black’s 34th birthday.
The family also raises concerns about crew safety. Mr Black was not wearing a life jacket on that late-night tender run, and the kill cord switch had been disabled, his family said. They vow to work to affect change. Read more about their concerns at Mr Black’s fundraising page.

‘One of the most carefully-prepared racing cars’ to auction

bugattiAn iconic Bugatti classic that has had only two owners since the 1950s will go under the hammer in the US later this month. The Bugatti Type 51 chassis number 51121 has an impeccable record, having been driven in the Monaco Grand Prix on four occasions.
Purchased new by Francis Curzon, the 5th Earl Howe, the car will be on the block at Bonham’s Quail Lodge auction in Monterey. Howe was the first president of the British Racing Driver’s Club, a group still in existence and the owners of the Silverstone circuit, home of the British Grand Prix.
Number 51121 was driven hard across Europe at Brooklands, Donington, Nürburgring, Montlhéry, Monza and Reims, and at hill climbs including the Klausenrennen and Shelsley Walsh, where it set fastest time of the day in 1932. Howe entered the car four times in the Monaco Grand Prix, placing fourth in 1932, and running to the late stages in the 1933 event.
At the Monaco Grand Prix, W.F. Bradley of The Autocar wrote that the new Bugatti was “… one of the most beautiful and carefully-prepared racing cars it has been my privilege to examine in a very long experience”. He described how the engine developed approximately 20 percent more power than the Type 35 and “is marvellously rapid in acceleration”.

Man's Best Man

Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 3.52.32 PMMonaco Paws recently spent a sunny afternoon getting to know Diana Gabriel, Steve Myro and their very handsome Boxer-Lab mix, Barney.
Where did you get Barney?
We got him from a pet shop in north Montreal. He was a mutt and a good deal, just $399. Sometimes we tell people he was a rescue (because of the bad reputation of pet shops). We like to think we rescued him from the pet shop.
How did Barney get his name?
We didn’t name him at first. Steve wasn’t sure he wanted to keep him because he was so messy at the beginning   But one day Steve just started calling him Barney, so then I knew he was here to stay.
How did Barney manage the transition from Montreal to Monaco?
He likes it here and we take him everywhere we go in Monaco. Still, he does miss his big dog friends from Canada.
What does Barney like to do?
He loves to sniff.   He needs to run a lot, but it’s hard to find places here where there is enough space for him to really run freely.
What do you feed him?
We started with kibble, but have now switched to a totally raw food diet. It’s much better for him and his health has improved a lot. But we can’t source it here, so we get it shipped in from Montreal. He also gets organic cinnamon treats. There’re really good, I’ve tried them (Steve).
Is Barney well trained?
When we got him he knew the word “sit”. To this day that’s still all he knows.   He hates cats and will chase them ruthlessly.
Is he a good guard dog?
He barks when anyone rings the doorbell, but otherwise he is not protective or aggressive at all.
Do you think he is a smart dog?
Not really, but he is very intuitive. He knows when we have a fight and comes over to comforts us.
What’s the best thing about Barney?
He is always happy. No mood swings…like us.
Was Barney really the Best Man at your wedding?
Yes, he wore a bow tie and Steve held on to him during the vows. He is in all the wedding photos too.
