Major economies continue to dominate the global ranking of the richest countries, with one nation’s private fortunes jumping by $200 billion (€177 billion) in six months alone, according to a new report released on Tuesday.

New World Wealth ranked the different countries according to the total amount of wealth, including property, cash, equities and business interests, held by all individuals as of June 2016. At least three countries from Asia appeared on the list, while four from Europe made it to the rankings.

Accumulating $48.9 trillion (€43 trillion) in wealth, the United States topped the overall list, followed by China, Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany in the top five. Rounding up the top ten are France, India, Canada, Australia and Italy.

Analysts are impressed by Australia’s showing in the top ten, considering that the country only has a population of 22 million. Australia, as well as Canada, has also overtaken Italy over the past 12 months, while China posted the fastest wealth growth over the past 15 years.

In terms of wealth held per person, European countries dominated the global rankings, with Monaco taking the number one spot. As of June 2016, the average person in Monaco owns $1.6 million (€1.42 million) in wealth, the highest in the world, reports New World Wealth, which also said the high average of wealth of Monaco’s residents can be attributed to the country’s tax-free regime. (Source: Gulf News)

Heatwave alert in effect

Very hot weather is expected throughout France this week, with three-quarters of the country experiencing temperatures of at least 35 degrees, and a peak of 40 in the south-east. On Tuesday, 39 degrees was reached near Bordeaux and 36 at Toulouse.

Several French departments have been placed on alert. In metropolitan areas temperatures will not drop below 20 degrees. This period of canicule is expected to come to an end this weekend.

During a heatwave, the Monaco government website recommends drinking “at least 1.5 litre of water every day and to avoid drinking alcohol, coffee, tea and fizzy or sugary drinks, as these can cause dehydration.” They also remind residents to call the Emergency Unit at Princess Grace Hospital on 97 98 99 00 in case of assistance during periods of very hot weather. AS Monaco advance in Champions League playoff

For ninety minutes it looked as if AS Monaco would go into the next stage of the Champions League in a goalless draw in the second leg of the contest with Spain’s Villarreal, moving ahead on the basis of the 2-1 away win last week. But a brilliant last-minute goal from Fabinho, in the 90th minute of the game at Stade Louis II on Tuesday night, meant that Monaco won 3-1 on aggregate and with a clear victory in both games.

Monaco were the favourites for the night, and although injuries have taken their toll of ASM’s roster, Villarreal came into the game with the same problems on a bigger scale. ASM can be well pleased with the result, a boost for the home team in a gruelling month for the Principality’s players.

Visitor numbers to France slump

The number of foreign tourists visiting France has fallen by seven percent since the start of the year, and the French government is blaming factors other than terrorism.

Jean-Marc Ayrault, Foreign Minister, will be hosting a summit in September to address the issues, which include bad weather and strikes, he said.

In a report released Tuesday by the Regional Tourism Committee, the number of visitors to Paris “from other parts of France and foreign countries” in the first six months of the year fell by 1 million to 14.9 million compared with the same period last year.

The terror attacks, particularly the atrocity in Nice on July 14, had the most impact on wealthier tourists and visitors from Asia, the minister added. A sum of €1 million had already been allocated to promote tourism nationally after last year’s terror attacks in Paris, and now an additional €500,000 has been designated to the PACA region by the central government following the Bastille Day attack that caused the deaths of 85 people, including several tourists.
