The European Council has approved the conclusion of an agreement with Monaco that will improve tax compliance by private savers, according to a press release from the Council.
The agreement will require EU-member states and Monaco to exchange information automatically as a means of helping to prevent tax evasion.
It will give their tax administrations improved cross-border access to information on the financial accounts of each other’s residents.
The agreement upgrades a 2004 agreement that obliged Monaco to apply measures equivalent to those in an EU directive on the taxation of savings income.
The new agreement was signed on July 12, 2016. It was concluded on October 11 at a meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council, without discussion.

Nice-Monaco Airport could take off
As previously published by Monaco Life, the Principality plans to invest €150 million in the privatisation of Nice airport. The award has already been made to an Italian-led consortium, but Monaco is keen to be involved, and according to initial reports, the deal would like to see the hub renamed as Nice-Monaco or Nice Monte-Carlo.
Italian airport and motorway operator Atlantia and France’s EDF Invest were the winning bidders in the privatisation of a 64 percent stake in Nice airport, which could bring €1.22 billion to French state coffers.
Monaco plans to buy five percent of the airport’s capital – equivalent to 12 percent of the consortium’s stake, BFMTV cited the Monaco government as saying.
Finance Minister Jean Castellini told Reuters by email Tuesday that discussions “have intensified and should lead to an agreement” although changing the the name was “not an issue and is not part of the negotiations”.
Biggest fight night of the year coming to Monaco
The Salle des Etoiles at the Sporting Monte-Carlo will host a huge night of world championship boxing on November 12 when Martin Murray will finally get the chance to avenge his world title defeat to Arthur Abraham as the pair meet again at the blockbuster Monaco boxing show.
Up for grabs will be the WBO International Super-Middleweight belt – with Murray looking for revenge after suffering a split-decision loss for the German’s World title in November, the UK’s Sun reports.
Matchroom Boxing and the Casino de Monte-Carlo are collaborating to bring the night of World championship boxing to the Salle des Etoiles, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
One of the world’s most dangerous and exciting heavyweights, Luis Ortiz, making his European debut in his first fight since teaming up with Matchroom Boxing, tops the bill as he looks to add to his 22 KOs from 25 wins as he takes on Malik Scott for the WBA Inter-Continental title –And WBA World Bantamweight king Jamie McDonnell defends his crown against Liborio Solis.
The Sporting Monte-Carlo has hosted two huge World title nights in the last two years, with pound-for-pound Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin defeating Martin Murray in February 2015 and Randy Cabellero outpointing Stuart Hall for the IBF Bantamweight crown in October 2014.
“It is an absolute honour to bring this huge night of World championship boxing to Monaco,” said promoter Eddie Hearn.
“It’s been a wonderful few years for British boxing but to showcase this great sport in such a high quality environment is very exciting. This is going to be the most high profile fight night of the year and we are looking forward to putting on an exceptional night of boxing for Monte-Carlo, fans and all of our international broadcasters.”
Pascal Camia, Director of Gaming at SBM since November 2015, added: “We are thrilled to host this new world-class boxing event and to perpetuate the tradition of boxing in Monaco which has now become a major rendezvous for the Casino de Monte-Carlo.
“From the gambling tables to the ring, the adrenaline will be flowing for a night of show and entertainment to be remembered.”
Solar Impulse continues to highlight clean technology
The pilots of Solar Impulse 2, the solar powered plane that completed a 43,000-kilometre (26,700-mile) journey around the world earlier this year, have other plans, the pair told a press conference in Geneva this week.
Their new project involves an unmanned version of Solar Impulse, aviator and engineer André Borschberg told reporters.
Borschberg and his business partner, Bertrand Piccard, had taken turns flying the aircraft in a mission controlled from headquarters in Monaco. Having showcased clean technologies, the Solar Impulse project now wants to provide a practical application for them, Piccard said.
The Swiss pioneers claim that an unmanned version of their craft could hover at altitudes relatively low compared to other pilotless craft such as satellites – about 20 kilometres (12 miles) above the earth – for months. Applications could include enhancing Wifi signals to poorly serviced areas or collecting agricultural data.
The Solar Impulse drone could do work “hardly done by other types of aircraft”, said Borschberg, who is Solar Impulse’s lead engineer. Piccard, an explorer who came up with the idea for the round-the-world flight, said that aside from working on a new aircraft, the Solar Impulse project would try to raise awareness about clean energies and their superiority to polluting fossil fuels.
Solar Impulse 2 circumnavigated the globe in 17 stages, with the final leg from Cairo to Abu Dhabi. Prince Albert is an enthusiastic supporter of Solar Impulse and was a frequent hands-on visitor to the Monaco command centre during the round the world flight.
