Monaco National Day highlights

MAN_6060Monaco has been celebrating its Fête Nationale since the reign of Prince Charles III in 1857, although “Festival of the Sovereign” was renamed “National Day” in 1951 when the commemoration moved to November 19, which is Saint Rainier of Arezzo Day, the patron saint of HSH the Sovereign Prince Rainier III. Prince Albert decided to keep November 19 as the Fête Nationale, or National Day as it’s known in English.
Around town over the weekend, the local Monaco community demonstrated its support for His Serene Highness with red and white flags displayed on every balcony, light pole, church and major landmark.

On Friday, school children dressed in red and white to participate in National Day and class activities included patriotic-themed art and crafts.
For the first time, the Mairie de Monaco put on a musical laser show at 8 pm Friday night at Port Hercules. This replaced the traditional fireworks display, although on Saturday evening, a pyrotechnic production will light up the Principality as usual.
The town hall also organised a 90-minute “Cabaret Show” at Espace Léo Ferré, with a performance on Friday and Saturday.
Prince Albert, returning from the COP22 conference in Marrakesh, wasted no time getting into the holiday spirit. Friday afternoon, His Serene Highness and Princess Charlene were at the Monegasque Red Cross where 138 gift baskets were presented to retirees and recipients of the Collectif Réfugiés d’Orient (CRO), a non-profit association that assists Christians, in Monaco and in France, who are persecuted due to their religion. The CRO welcomed the third Syrian refugee family to the Principality two weeks ago.
Before hosting the National Day Ambassador’s Party at the yacht club Friday evening, Prince Albert met with the American Ambassador to Paris, Jane Hartley. US Secretary of State, John Kerry, issued a statement November 17, recognising that Monaco is one of the world’s oldest sovereignties and “has been a trusted friend to the United States for over 150 years”. He said, “On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the Monegasque citizens as you celebrate the Sovereign Prince’s Day on November 19. Please also accept our warmest felicitations on the tenth anniversary of full diplomatic relations between the United States and Monaco.”

Saturday was a non-step schedule, starting at 9:30 am when Prince Albert presented medals and honours to the police and palace guards at a ceremony at the Palace’s Cour d’Honneur.
Saturday’s invitation-only Mass took place from 10:15-11:15 am at the Monaco Cathedral, where on Friday afternoon, a remembrance service for Monaco resident Paul Pettavino, who died Saturday November 11, filled the church, an appropriate tribute for the remarkable 20-year-old.
To honour the events that have marked France over the last year, Saturday morning’s traditional Te Deum was replaced by Psalm 130 “De Profundis”, a prayer for the deceased.
Following the morning’s service, back at the Place du Palais, the Prince and his family celebrated National Day with the Monegasques (it’s never too late to learn the National Anthem), and the traditional balcony waves and parade ran just over an hour.
Prince Albert blew one final kiss to the crowd before the palace windows were closed at 1 pm, when the official lunch was served in the Salle du Thône.
A gala reception for the Fête Nationale was held later in the evening at 6:30 pm, and the day ended with a performance of Verdi’s “Nabucco” in the Salles de Princes for those lucky enough to have been invited.

NFL organisers over the moon

NFL111On Sunday, November 20, after more than 190 hours of walking, jogging and running, the 2016 edition of No Finish Line was completed in the presence of the Carabinieri band and this year its goals were surpassed, yet again.
A total of 11,739 runners and walkers completed the 1370-metre circuit for a total of 392,000 kilometres. This year’s goal was “to the moon” – 384,400 kilometres is the exact distance from the earth to the moon – and today NFL announced that they beat the target by 7,600 kilometres. Participants travelled 8,000 kilometres more than last year.
As every kilometre equals one euro in sponsorship, €392,000 will be donated to Children & Future to finance projects for sick and underprivileged children.
No Finish Line is a generous cosmopolitan race, a convivial meeting place and a formidable event for the numerous teams competing – 358 this year, representing nearly 10,000 people and who annually garner more than 60 percent of kilometres, making it a personal challenge for the individual participants and a major sporting event, its organisers say.
NFL1Some results: The Prince’s Cup was handed to Didier Sessegolo for 939 km travelled, 2nd place went Robert Morin (915 km) and 3rd to Bernard Chevillon (866 km).
NFL11The first woman and 5th overall, Mimi Chevillon with 817 km (winner last year with 813 km). In second, Australian Sarah Barnett (746 km) followed by Annick Fouchard Djebli (738 km).
The first winning team, again this year, the Sancta Devota Foundation with 13,841 km, associated with the ACM. Second went to the Flavian Foundation (11,688 km) and third Barclays Monaco with 10,278 km.
For the teams in relay, the top three teams were the Firemen of Monaco with 322 km, Ferberian (317 km) and Teams Endurance Shop Menton (280 km).
Rendez-vous November 11 to 19, 2017, for a new edition still in Fontvieille and with new records to beat.

Monaco drags behind Dublin's property market

Monacoproperty2Monaco is lagging behind Dublin in terms of prime property prices, according to the latest report from Knight Frank.
Dublin’s prime residential properties, defined as the top five percent of the housing market, increased by 0.9 percent to 5.5 percent on an annual basis for the second consecutive quarter, making the Irish capital the highest performer in Europe.
Monaco – where supply remains limited – and Geneva both grew at 1.8 percent annually, followed by Edinburgh with 1.6 percent growth, according to the property consultancy.
Although Vancouver remains top of the global index, its quarterly price growth fell to 1.5 percent in the three months to September, due largely to the introduction of a 15 percent tax for foreign buyers, a successful policy move intended to slow down price increases.
Overall, the Knight Frank index increased by 3.8 percent in the year to September 2016. In Europe, Vienna (-1%), Milan (-1.4%), London (-2.1%), Zurich (-3.3%), and Paris (-3.8%) all witnessed declines in prime property prices over the period.

My Yacht Group returned to Port Hercule to host its exclusive charity reception on the opening night of the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show aboard the newly refitted 55m superyacht M/Y Turquoise. Guest of honour, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco joined the festivities mingling with a global selection of HNW guests that included yachting “royalty” Peter Lürssen, easyGroup founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Lornamead founder George Jatania, Turquoise owner and Knox House Group founder Douglas Barrowman, plus VIP guests of Monaco Private Label, and more.
Following six years of partnerships at Art Basel Miami Beach, two years at Art Basel Hong Kong, plus events together in Monterey, California, and Austin, Texas, this was the debut Monaco event for presenting sponsor Bank Vontobel AG, with board executives and clients aboard. Zurich-headquartered and family owned since 1924, Vontobel specialises in active asset management and tailor-made investment solutions, providing responsible and forward-looking advice.
A long time exhibitor at the show, Crestron – the world-leader in the design and installation of control & automation technology for over four decades – showcased its products aboard and gifted guests with its device-charging Smart Powerbank, as well as the device-finding “Tile”, thus ensuring continuous charge and connectivity throughout the evening, and beyond! Franck Dubarry timepieces, in a world premiere, added some extra sparkle, with the eponymous watchmaker on hand to discuss the collection that includes the Revolution, CrazyBalls, and CrazyColors series.
Sir Stelios chatted with guests about his latest venture, the all-new, not-for-profit Gustavia Yacht Club on the Caribbean island of St. Barts. Set to open its new Clubhouse in November, and currently accepting membership applications, it will create a new and exclusive meeting place in the heart of Gustavia while promoting social and sailing activities on the island and beyond.
The Riviera’s hottest 5-piece strolling band, Garcons Chics, provided a playful accompaniment as guests enjoyed fine foods and wines. Caviar France served generous portions of its premium, sustainable Siberian Sturgeon from an ice sculpture by award-winning sculptor Mario Emegee, while Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2007, Martell Cordon Bleu cognac, plus magnums and double magnums of Chateau d’Esclans Rock Angel 2014 and Les Clans 2013, were the perfect libations for the balmy evening that saw a portion of proceeds benefitting My Yacht Group’s chosen charity partner, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
A TV crew shed some light (literally) on subjects Nicholas, and twin sister Annabelle, as comedienne and presenter Katherine Ryan, filmed a “day in the life” special for a new 6-part series on self-made entrepreneurs. The segment is set to air on Channel 4, one of the UK’s leading broadcast networks, this autumn.
