Childhood home of Princess Grace to open as museum

Grace_Kelly_MGM_photoHSH Prince Albert has announced that the Philadelphia home of his mother, Princess Grace, will open to the public by 2018.

In an interview with PEOPLE Magazine, the Prince said that the refurbished 6-bedroom brick colonial mansion at 3901 Henry Avenue could open sooner. He bought the house last autumn after it had been on the open market for several months.

In addition to being a museum open for special events, the building will house regional offices of the Princess Grace Foundation and a US extension of Monaco’s Princess Grace Irish Library.

The house, built in 1935 by Albert’s grandfather John B. Kelly, was where Prince Albert’s father, Prince Rainier, proposed to then actress Grace Kelly.

The Prince said that opening the house as a usual museum was not what he has in mind, adding that it is important to keep the neighbourhood’s residential quality.

“While it is a historical landmark, I don’t think that a dedicated museum is the right avenue to take. There will though be any number of events which will facilitate public viewing.”

Monaco’s Irish Library was founded in 1984 by Prince Rainier, as a tribute to Grace’s love of literature. The Library holds regular events and sponsors lectures and visiting authors.

“I hadn’t seen the house in a good many summers and some of it is in relatively good shape,” he told PEOPLE. “The previous owner hadn’t touched some parts in 40 years.

“Seeing it without furniture was odd,” he added. “And, it seems a little small. Of course, when you’re young everything seems bigger.”

AS Monaco invest in future talent

AS Monaco have signed Brazilian international defender Jorge on a five-year contract worth €8.5 million. The 20-year-old was part of the Brazilian team that made it to the final of the U-20 World Championships in New Zealand in 2015, alongside new teammate Boschilia.

Jorge – whose full name is Jorge Marco de Oliveira Moraes – made more than 80 appearances for Flamengo, scoring five goals, and won his first senior Brazil cap last week.

“Jorge is part of this talented generation of Brazilians whom we are monitoring closely. He’s a lively player with very good crossing ability, who I’m sure will in time settle into the team’s style of play perfectly,” said ASM’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev.

Commenting that Jorge’s arrival is part of a long-term plan, Mr Vasilyev added, “In Monaco, he has everything he needs to adapt and develop with the squad. We have high hopes for him in the future.”

For his part, Jorge commented: “The club’s management convinced me to join AS Monaco’s project. This is a big ambitious club. I want to do everything possible to follow in the footsteps of my countrymen Fabinho, Jemerson and Boschilia, who have come a long way since arriving in Monaco.”

Former ASM star sent to jail

footA former player for AS Monaco has been sent to jail for three years for failing to pay taxes of more than half a million euros.

Franck Dumas owed €557,496 in taxes and penalties for the period January, 2011, until December 31, 2013, despite earning more than €1.3 million in 2012 alone, when he was manager of the football club in Caen, Normandy.

Dumas told the court that he had a problem with gambling, spending more than €100,000 a month at the height of his addiction, adding that he had not intended to defraud the taxman.

Dumas was part of the Monaco team that won the French championship in 1997. After leaving ASM, he played for Olympic de Marseille. When his tax offences became known he was fired as manager of Caen. Ten months of the three-year sentence was suspended.

Better access to A8 from Monaco in the works

A8 road

A8

Vinci Autoroutes has announced an investment plan amounting to €432 million, most of it earmarked for new interchanges and carpool areas in the PACA area, where 25 major improvements are planned.

The statement came one day before tollbooth prices rise by an average of 0.8 percent on February 1 at péages across France. As expected, much of the expenditure will be on the A8 motorway, an essential link between the Principality and Nice and its airport to the west, and Menton and Italy to the east. Better access to the A8 from Monaco is included in Vinci’s programme.

Air France blocks US embarkations

Visadenied

Air France has already refused boarding of reportedly fifteen people due to fly to the United States since the signing of an executive order on Friday, January 27, by American President Donald Trump, prohibiting the entry to the US of nationals of seven predominantly Muslim countries.

The airline said that the passengers denied embarkation were natives of the seven listed countries, although that did not necessarily mean that they had arrived from one of those countries en route to the US.

“We have taken care of all these passengers, nobody is blocked in Paris, we have made the necessary arrangements to re-route these people to their point of origin,” a spokesman told AFP.
