It would be difficult to exaggerate the success of 2016 for the Monegasque economy, a record year for the Principality.

Jean Castellini, Minister of Finance and Economy, told the Eco-Club of Monaco-Matin that the Principality is proving its dynamism thanks to the leading economic indicators for last year.

Mr Castellini said that several factors combined to make 2016 so successful: the fiscal scenario, tourism, and company formation. A total of 1,300 applications were filed for company formations, he said.

“For the fifth consecutive year, we should close the fiscal year in surplus. We reached a record level of revenue in 2016 and the main contributors are tax revenues such as VAT, corporation tax and transfer taxes. Each one testifies to our vitality,” he said.

One-game ban for Monaco VP

Vadim Vasilyev, Vice-President AS Monaco

AS Monaco’s Vice-President, Vadim Vasilyev, has been given a one-game ban for alleging that French referees have been biased in favour of club rivals Lyon.

Mr Vasilyev made the controversial claims after Monaco’s 3-1 defeat to Lyon on December 18. He repeated the same allegations in an interview with French sports paper L’Equipe, published 48 hours later.

“I wanted to denounce a particular context around Lyon matches which do not favour calmness … It’s the context around Lyon matches I denounce. I’m not the first to do it, a lot of people have talked about that before me,” Vasilyev told the publication.

The French Football League’s Disciplinary Commission said the one-game ban will come into force on February 14, preventing him from taking any part in the game. An additional one-match suspended ban will be activated should he infringe again.

Monaco will be making a Ligue 1 trip to Bastia on February 17. However, Vasilyev will be able to take part in the Monaco delegation that goes to England for the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie with Manchester City on February 21.

Tension between the French League and Monaco have run high in the past, particularly in the financial context, with a number of French clubs claiming that Monaco has an unfair advantage in being able to pay players’ salaries tax free.

Monegasque jailed for sex offences

prisonbars (1)

A Monegasque has been sent to jail for sexual offences against two young cousins. The 33-year-old man, married with three children, committed the offences against the children, aged 10 and 12 at the time, between 2013 and 2014. He was said to have touched the girls intimately and then cautioned them to remain silent on the matter.

Bearing in mind the seriousness of the offences and the defendant’s troubled family history, the court took three days to come to its conclusion. The prosecution had called for two years in jail, but the culprit was sentenced to 12 months behind bars. Since he has already been in jail for six months, he will be eligible for freedom in just a few months.

The family’s sexual past was raised in the court’s lengthy deliberations, including the fact that the accused had also been the victim of an indecent assault earlier in his life in the same family home in Liguria.

However, the defendant accepted the seriousness of his offences, the court was told. His defence lawyer argued that the accused would undergo psychiatrist treatment upon his release from prison and pointed to the uselessness of inflicting a heavy penalty.

Police in Spain have discovered a clandestine workshop where middle-of-the-range cars have been dismantled and reconstructed to be passed off as Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Fourteen vehicles, in various stages of transformation, were found in a workshop in Sils, in the Gerona province in the northeast of the country.

Four of the cars, rebuilt to resemble Ferraris, were ready to be sold online, the police said. The Spanish authorities were led to the operation after finding a counterfeit Ferrari in the Mediterranean city of Benidorm.

The top price ever paid for a Ferrari in the collector’s car market was at auction $35,711,359 (€32,075,200) in February 2016 for a 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti.
