The Princess Grace Irish Library is hosting a distinguished speaker, Andrew Biswell, on Monday, February 20, who will look at the connections between the writer Anthony Burgess and the Principality.

Mr Biswell’s lecture will examine the links between the period of Anthony Burgess’s residence in Monaco and the late flowering of his literary and musical creativity. Drawing on a wealth of unpublished materials, the talk will be illustrated with photographs and music. This is the first time that the story of Burgess’s life in Monaco has been told in detail.

Anthony Burgess (1917-1993), a Founding Trustee of the Princess Grace Irish Library, moved to Monaco in 1975. Living in the top-floor apartment at 44 rue Grimaldi, he wrote many of his most famous works in the Principality, including “Earthly Powers” (1980), “A Dead Man in Deptford” (1993) and the two volumes of his autobiography, “Little Wilson and Big God” (1987) and “You’ve Had Your Time” (1990). His detailed diary of his life on the Riviera has been preserved in the archive of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation.

Best known as the author of “A Clockwork Orange”, Anthony Burgess was a prolific novelist, playwright, poet, musician and literary journalist. In total, he wrote 33 novels, 25 non-fiction books, thousands of literary essays, and more than 250 musical works.

Anthony Burgess was very active in the intellectual life of the Princess Grace Irish Library. He gave The Richard Ellmann Memorial Lecture (Joyce as Novelist) at the 12th International James Joyce Symposium organised by the Library at the Centre de Congrès Auditorium de Monaco in 1990. In addition to writing articles about Princess Grace, Mr Burgess commemorated her when he composed “In Memoriam Princess Grace”, a piece for string orchestra.

Andrew Biswell is Professor of Modern Literature at Manchester Metropolitan University and the Director of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. He is the editor of “A Clockwork Orange: The Restored Edition” (Penguin, 2013) and the author of an award-winning biography, “The Real Life of Anthony Burgess”. In addition, he’s one of the general editors of “The Irwell Edition of the Works of Anthony Burgess”, to be published by Manchester University Press. He is currently preparing a critical edition of Burgess’s first novel, “A Vision of Battlements”, set on Gibraltar during the Second World War.

Reservations (pglib@monaco.mc) for Monday’s lecture essential due to the limited number of seats. Entry €10 per person payable at the door.

AS Monaco Basket was back at Disneyland Paris for the LNB Leaders Cup and won the quarterfinal game over Gravelines-Dunkerque 90-85.

The Northerners had won six victories for a single defeat in Pro A since early December, and were no easy opponent. But the Roca Team has the best of the 40 teams in the Basketball Champions League (12V-2D), with only two defeats, in Nancy and at home against Paris-Levallois.

Since 2013, the Leaders Cup regroups the first eight Pro A teams at the end of the first leg of the regular season. With 27 victories for every five defeats in all competitions, the Roca Team leads the championship and is the overall favourite in this competition.

EFG Bank Monaco’s sailing crew are back where they are used to being, at the head of the Sailing Arabia – The Tour (SATT) yacht race after winning the second leg on Saturday.

The reigning champions had been narrowly beaten on the first leg, from Muscat to Sohar, by Oman’s Team Renaissance.

EFG Bank Monaco passed Team Almouj Muscat less than ten miles from the Khasab finish line after more than 130 miles of close racing, with the second-placed boat finishing three minutes later.

The five offshore legs involve a race of 763 nautical mles around the Arabian Gulf. EFG Bank Monaco have won the last three editions of EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour.

Skipper Thierry Douillard said: “It is a good feeling to win – it was not an easy leg at all. We led into the night but then ended up in a tricky position. The wind shift we had been waiting for came right at the end of the leg and we had a wonderful fight with Team Al Mouj Muscat for the lead. Thankfully it was a fight we won.”

The French state is offering €200 towards the cost of buying an electrically assisted bicycle. The payment will be offered from now until January 31, 2018. The motor must be less than 3kW and without a lead battery, according to the Official Journal published on Saturday, February 18. Each payment will be limited to one per person, and not per machine.

A number of local authorities – Paris, Blois, Rouen – already offer up to €400 as a subsidy, and the €200 from the state would be on top of this. Motorised bicycles usually cost more than €700 euros. In Aix-les-Bains, Savoie, 400 people have already benefited from a subsidy of €250, amounting to about 1.3 percent of the town’s total population.

Immediately following, guests were invited aboard the 47m/155ft Christensen M/Y One More Toy, moored directly opposite the store, for a private dinner and after party.

In keeping with other MYG events, the charity evening raised awareness and funds for Operation Healing Forces (OHF), whose vision is for all returning Special Operations Forces to reclaim happy, productive and fulfilling lives through supporting their mental, physical and emotional healing, and provides special couples retreats, as they prepare to transition successfully into civilian life … or to return to the fight.

Gary Markel, owner of One More Toy and President of OHF, and Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Hudson, US Army Retired, gave a moving presentation to highlight the incredible work the charity organisation has been doing for the past six years, with subsequent on board donations and pledges raising over $11,000 (€10,400) for OHF.

Luminous bottles of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé 2007 cast a festive glow upon the proceedings, with guests also enjoying Chateau d’Esclans’ Whispering Angel, plus fine fare from local Gustavia hotspot,,25 Quarter, and generous portions of caviar from St Barth Epicurean. All guests were gifted a signature Bvlgari scented candle.

One More Toy was refitted in 2015 and sleeps 14 guests in 6 staterooms. Available for charter and sale through Mark Elliot at IYC, with preferred rates through MYG for summer charters in the Mediterranean, including during Cannes Film Festival and Monaco F1 Grand Prix.

My Yacht Group is the result of twenty years spent working in the fields of sports and entertainment sponsorship and experiential marketing, creating long-term strategic partnerships with luxury and aspirational brands that showcase their products and entertain their top clients, while mixing with a highly targeted, pre-qualified guest list at invitation-only events. Few spots remain for their Monaco F1 Grand Prix party weekend.
