Monaco took part in the first session of the Governing Council of the World Food Programme (WFP) from February 20 to 23, 2017, during which the WFP launched its new roadmap. This incorporates three new policies on climate change, environment and nutrition, in response to UN resolutions aimed at “Eradicating hunger, ensuring food security, improving Nutrition and sustainable agriculture” and the Paris Agreement.
Monaco’s participation honoured the commitment of the Prince’s Government to the WFP and paid tribute to the Executive Director, Ertharin Cousin. During her five-year term, Ms Cousin was able to reform the organisation and increase its effectiveness by combining emergency humanitarian aid and development programmes to meet the “Zero Hunger Challenge”.
On the sidelines of the sessions, HE Mr Robert Fillon, Ambassador of the Principality of Monaco in Italy, Permanent Representative to FAO and Ms Martine Garcia, Deputy Representative to FAO and WFP, met with Mr Abdou Dieng, Regional Director of MAP For Central and Western Africa. They discussed together the development of the partnership with the Monegasque Cooperation and its support for long-term aid programmes in Burundi, Madagascar and Mauritania, and the response to emergency aid for populations affected by food crises and natural disasters.
