Around a thousand people attended the screening of the film “Solar Impulse, the Impossible World Tour” on Monday night at the Rainier III Auditorium. The special event was organised by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the government, and held in the presence of HSH Prince Albert.

The two founders and pilots of the solar aircraft, Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg, spoke at the end of the evening on their exploit: to travel 43,000 kilometres across five continents and two oceans on board the solar aircraft without using a drop of fuel.

Leaving Abu Dhabi on March 9, 2015, the two pilots took turns during the 17 stages aboard the plane, a single-seater with electric motors fuelled solely by solar energy, until their return on July 26 last year. Throughout their epic adventure, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the whole of the Principality actively supported the project, which had its mission control in Monaco.

startupVROOM has announced its spring 2017 Caravan Challenge, which will take place in eight cities in eight countries, culminating with finalists presenting their innovative and disruptive ideas in Monaco, on April 27, 2017 at the invitation-only VROOM Summit.

The concept behind the VROOM Caravan Challenge is simple, its organisers say. A challenge date will be announced to startup communities seeking investments in key cities. Startups submit their pitch to VROOM and the selected qualified top ten are invited to present their big idea to a visiting VROOM panel, who select one winner from each city.

From there, each finalist is invited to VROOM Summit, which is founded and organised by White Castle Partners, to showcase their business proposition to tech industry investors and the Cote d’Azur investment community in an intimate environment in Monaco.

Allianz Accelerator is the main partner of the 2017 VROOM events. At the heart of the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice, the Allianz Accelerator supports the growth of innovative, promising startups by offering them an intensive 5-month acceleration programme benefiting from a network of mentors and experts, backers and major investors and given structured assistance in their development.

Previous VROOM Summit success stories include MindMaze, which is “developing both hardware and a software platform that create ‘human’ virtual reality experiences by tapping into advances in computer vision, neuroscience, AI and haptics, and raised $100M funding bringing it to a $1.1B post money valuation thereby cementing its status as a VR “unicorn” in February 2016.

As well, Hubs, a 3D printer matching service in over 160 countries, announced the completion of its Series B financing, totalling $7 million in August 2016.

VROOM will visit Amsterdam, Barcelona, Geneva, Istanbul, Lisbon, Ljubljana, Reykjavik and Warsaw through February and March 2017.

AS Monaco looks to youth

Cercle Bruge
Monaco’s football club is looking north for a new partnership, by offering to buy a majority stake in the historic club of Belgian football, Cercle Brugge, to benefit from the Belgian school of youth development.

The second-tier Belgian outfit has caught the eye of Monaco – currently top of France’s Ligue 1 – as the club looks to the future.

“AS Monaco FC wishes to announce that it has made a purchase offer … to acquire a majority stake in the club Cercle Brugge KSV,” AS Monaco said in a statement.

Adding that the endeavour will provide an additional stage in the development of young players from the AS Monaco Academy, between the reserve team (in the CFA division) and AS Monaco first team, Monaco also claimed, “The primary objective will be to achieve promotion to the Belgian first division.”

Cercle Brugge were relegated last season and need outside investment to maximise its chances of returning to the top flight.

“It is an open secret that healthy business in First Division B of professional football in Belgium is not easy, partly due to the limited revenue from television fees and the limited media attention and by the high operational costs,” the announcement also said.

This venture is part of AS Monaco’s strategy for developing young talent and a general meeting of Cercle Brugge’s shareholders will take a decision by the end of February.

The leader of the pack

Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 4.01.22 PM

February 20 is Love Your Pet Day, at least in the US. Certified dog behaviourist Karen September of Happy Dog MC, who has worked in the Monaco area for nearly eight years, gives some advice to Monaco Paws on tough puppy love

What got you interested in dog training?
KS: I grew up on a farm in Australia and we always had dogs and horses. I’ve been around dogs all my life as we bred Bull Terriers and Blue Heelers.

Have you found that dogs in Monaco have any special issues?
KS: Monaco is so small with a huge concentration of dogs so it’s important that dogs learn correct social behaviour. But the problem is that living in small apartments dogs don’t always get enough exercise and this can result in barking, aggression, anxiety and bad lead manners.

What is the most important lesson that owners need to learn?
KS: It is really important for owners to set rules, boundaries and limitations in the home and outside. I find that owners often humanize their dogs to the point that the dog becomes confused. Dogs are pack animals and need a strong pack leader.

What should owners do if they are having problems with a dog’s behaviour?
KS: Bad behaviour is a cry for help. The first thing is to look at the daily routine. Exercise is essential; dogs are travellers, they love to move and explore and if they don’t get enough exercise (a garden is no substitute for walking out) they become frustrated and bored.

Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 4.01.09 PMHow much exercise does an average dog need?
KS: I recommend at least a 30-45 minute walk, two times per day.

Why is walking, especially on the lead, so important?
KS: Correct lead manners where the dog walks respectfully next to, or behind their owner, is the foundation for teaching the dog you are his pack leader and he is a follower. If the dog is in front he will instinctually assume a protective, leader role and this is when the problems start.

How does the human become the pack leader?
KS: It’s all about energy. Dogs rely on their instincts, not conversation. If you project a calm, assertive energy your dog will relax and respond with calm, submissive energy and look to you for direction in all situations.

So, the training is both for the dog and the owner?
KS: Yes, definitely. Dogs and humans have a deep connection that goes back 20,000 years. However, you can’t be a friend to your dog without first establishing a leadership role. I am not saying that giving love and affection is wrong, but it must be given at the right times.

Besides lead training, how else do you help dog owners?
KS: I can help in lots of ways. I love to help people adopt a dog or choose a new puppy. I can help socialise a dog to a new baby or a change of circumstances. As well, I specialise in working with dogs that are overly aggressive or have anxiety problems.

Do you think its possible to teach an old dog new tricks?
KS: Age has no bearing whatsoever. It’s never too late for a dog to learn to be calm, balanced and happy.
