Fugitive banker still sought by Russia

bankingRussia’s General Prosecutor’s Office has sent a request to the authorities in the UK for the extradition of Georgy Bedzhamov, who faces charges of embezzlement in Russia. Last year Bedzhamov was held in Monaco at the behest of the Russian authorities and later released.

Bedzhamov was a co-owner of Vneshprombank, which at the time of its licence being revoked on January 21, 2016, was Russia’s 40th biggest lender in terms of assets. Interpol has said that it has not put the banker on its wanted list because the prosecution in Russia does not correspond with its goals and objectives.

Bedzhamov’s sister Larisa Markus, the president of Vneshprombank, was arrested on December 22, 2016, on fraud charges. Bedzhamov has also served as the Vice- President of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF), being elected to the post in May 2014.

Bedzhamov was detained by the police in Monaco in mid-April 2016. On July 12, 2016, the Court of Appeal of Monaco refused to extradite him. Bedzhamov is believed to have travelled to the UK and is now in London.

In the presence of Patrice Cellario, Minister of the Interior, one of the early highlights of the year has just taken place in the bar of the Barracks of the Carabiniers on Boulevard de Belgique with Commander Gilles Convertini, Head of Corps, Daniel Boeri, National Councilor, and Marc Costa amongst many other personalities.

Carabiniers-feves-bicentenaire-1_blocOngletSmallIn association with the Carabiniers, the Costa company, which operates several coffee shops and patisseries across the Principality, has produced 20 charms representing the different uniforms worn by the Corps over the past 200 years. The first 50 people who collected these 20 beans were invited to the party during which they were handed a 21st special collector bean.

Members of Monaco’s very successful basketball team have been meeting hands-on with young students in Monaco to spread their own enthusiasm for the game. Olivier Basset, Roca Team’s assistant coach, Amara Sy, the team captain, and Jamal Shuler, one of the leading scorers in the team, were at the Révoires school on February 9 to share their passion.

During the visit, students of the fourth and fifth grades (CM1 and CM2) demonstrated a lot of enthusiasm for the sport and its local representatives.

This educational approach is part of the policy of the Directorate of National Education, Youth and Sports to enable pupils, particularly those of Révoires, to become familiar with certain sporting, artistic and cultural disciplines. For example, table tennis, dancing, and bridge sessions are offered to students every Thursday during their lunch break.

Roca Team, currently at the head of the PRO A championship, take on the Antibes Sharks February 14 at 8 pm.
