Monaco marine transporter reports better year

Monaco-based Scorpio Bulkers has announced its financial results for 2016, showing a much-reduced loss compared to the previous year.

For the year ended December 31, 2016, the shipping company’s adjusted net loss was $99.9 million, or $1.78 adjusted loss per diluted share. This excludes a loss/write-off of vessels and assets held for sale of $12.4 million, the write off of deferred financing costs on credit facilities that will no longer be used of $2.5 million and a charter hire contract termination fee of $10.0 million. These adjustments total a $0.44 loss per diluted share.

For comparison, in the year ended December 31, 2015, the company had a GAAP net loss of $510.8 million, or $23.86 loss per diluted share. The company’s adjusted net loss was $71.8 million or $3.36 adjusted loss per diluted share. This excludes a write down on assets held for sale of $422.9 million and the write off of deferred financing costs on credit facilities that will no longer be used of $16.1 million, or $20.50 loss per share.

As of February 3, 2017, the company had approximately $141.9 million in cash and cash equivalents.

As of Monday, the Department of Urban Development is undertaking major work on the sewerage network at the busy intersection of Avenue de la Madone and Avenue des Spélugues, which is scheduled to last for seven weeks.

Due to the scale of the work, alternate traffic has been set up for the duration of the operation. In order to limit waiting times for vehicles, traffic flows will be operated manually during the day and by traffic lights at night.

Information worth updating in your GPS should you need to make a quick trip to the delivery room.

A total of 938 babies were born in Monaco in 2016, 474 girls and 464 boys. The figure was a little lower than 2015, when a total of 1,067 births were recorded. Almost all of last year’s 936 births were at the Princess Grace Hospital.

Most of the new arrivals (682) were to parents living outside the Principality while 256 of the families live in Monaco. The favourite name for boys was Gabriel, and for girls, Sofia.

The State recorded 503 deaths during the year and a total of 193 weddings.

South African youngsters look forward to Monaco exchange

As part of the third edition of the South Africa-Monaco Rugby Exchange, twelve young rugby players will fly from Princess Charlene’s native South Africa next month to participate in the Sainte Dévote Tournament, a rugby sevens event that attracts teams from around the world.

The South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) is organising the trip in partnership with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation and Cell C, which will be the third time that South Africa has been represented in the event.

All 12 participants are from underprivileged areas of the Western Cape.

“My involvement with the sport of rugby has shown me how it encourages players to develop values such as team spirit, fun, fellowship, solidarity, and good sportsmanship,” Gavin Varejes, SARLA commented.

“The South African youngsters selected for the Sainte Dévote Tournament will benefit immensely from the experience and we hope that it will inspire them to work hard and achieve other successes both on and off the field,” he added.

Later in the year, 12 young Monaco rugby players will visit South Africa.

Following three successful years participating in the celebration of the some of the most prestigious lifestyle events in the world, the champagne house will continue to support the ACM as its official and exclusive champagne.

Monaco students learn about Circus, new generation awards presented

On Friday, February 3, Mrs Isabelle Bonnal, Director of National Education, Youth and Sports, had the honour of welcoming the daughter of HSH Princess Stéphanie, Ms Camille Gottlieb, and Mrs Guilaine Telle, wife of Minister of State Serge Telle, to an exhibition organised at the École de Fontvieille on the theme “circus world”.

This exhibition is part of a teaching project entitled “Circus Arts and Heritage”, as offered to primary schools pupils of the Principality. As part of the endeavour a special educational performance of the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival took place under the marquee of Fontvieille on January 26.

A total of 900 pupils have been able to familiarise themselves with the rich and fascinating world of the circus, through four modules (Circus Arts, Literature and Circus, Circus in class, and Sciences).

New Generation circus festival awards announced
The winners of the New Generation of the International Monte-Carlo Circus festival were announced on Sunday evening.

The jury, headed by Pauline Ducruet, daughter of HSH Princess Stephanie, awarded the Gold Medal to the Shanghai Russian Bar Troupe. Four silver awards were made, to 3 Funky Monkeys, 3 J Juggling, The Tightrope Walkers of Studio Arena, Anastasiia Trushin, and Catalina Palma.

The bronze medal went to Sophia, David Junior, Kimberly and Holler Zavatta and the Trapeze of Kazan duo.

More than 40 other prizes were awarded by local businesses and organisations. The Public Prize went to the Shanghai Russian Bar Troupe.

The Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival is recognised as the world’s leading circus event with the New Generation performances and prizes offering a foretaste of the stars of tomorrow.

Rainy day Sunday for kids at Stars’n’Bars, Superbowl tonight

ecobricoTwo local associations, Monacology and Terres méditerranées, have just the thing to keep young minds occupied on a rainy Sunday afternoon this weekend, “Eco Brico”.

Children from the age of 5 and up are invited to participate in a series of eco-creative workshops and storytelling at Stars’n’Bars today, from 1 pm to 6 pm.

The afternoon includes a range of speakers to capture the imagination of youngsters from Monaco and the region, from Marina Di Mattei, who will demonstrate how to create treasures from recycled materials to Mihaela Stoica, a genius at creating accessories using recycled textiles to make wallets, a cupcake keyholder for girls and for boys, a car.

Guided by Cathy Cuby, children can also design plant-based Mosaics, which they can take home afterward, and Marie-Christine Constantine will teach the art of making masks.

With their joint Eco Brico event, Monacology and Terre méditerranées aim to promote creativity and art as a means of expression and communication while making a gesture for the planet.

Later this evening, the New England Patriots take on the Atlanta Falcons for Superbowl 51. The match out of NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, will be aired on Stars’n’Bars’ big screen from 11 pm. Reservations advised.
