The director of a large international company offering diet products has been found guilty of drunk driving and insulting and assaulting police officers.
The Monaco Criminal Court was told that the defendant had decided to celebrate International Women’s Day with a friend and had drunk considerably more than he should have. His Porsche Cayenne hit a barrier on ave des Castelans in Fontvieille with enough violence for the airbags to be detonated. When getting into the ambulance with his passenger, the driver lashed out with his feet, the court was told.
Later, when sober, he denied his actions. The President of the court pointed out to the accused that it was not his first offence for drunk driving, but his third. His defending lawyer said that his client, a doctor, suffered from psychological problems. An order for him to undergo professional treatment would be welcome, she said. Sending him to jail would cause significant problems as he was a director in charge of one hundred scientific researchers and other employees.
However, the court decided to follow the request of the prosecution, and sent him to jail for two months.
Minister of State Serge Telle held a reception on Thursday, March 16, for employees who have obtained the Monegasque Professional Certification set up by the Monaco Government, on the initiative of the Monegasque Association of Financial Activities (AMAF).
The objective of this mandatory certification system, which came into force in May 2014, is to increase the level of competence of the employees of banks and Monegasque management companies as well as to enhance the reputation of excellence of the Principality.
This professional certification is intended for all Front Office employees, that is to say, those who are in direct contact with customers or markets and their direct managers.
Since its inception, 225 professionals have been certified. In his speech, Serge Telle stressed that “the excellence of the Monaco financial centre is a priority. This excellence is directed to several areas: on the one hand, supervision, regulation and organisation of the financial professions, guaranteeing know-how and legitimacy, and on the other, regular and targeted promotion of Monaco as a financial centre, especially at the international level.
SNB’s Didier Rubiolo and Kate Powers with KIA Motors reps
Stars’n’Bars co-founders Didier Rubiolo and Kate Powers continued to highlight their commitment to the environment and the planet Wednesday afternoon, as they jumped into the restaurant’s new electric car, the Kia Soul EV.
The Soul is the latest addition to Stars’n’Bars’ “eco-fleet” – which consists of a battery-powered, 2-seater Twizy and two electric bicycles.
Speaking outside the restaurant in front of the Soul, Mr Rubiolo told Monaco Life: “About a year and a half ago, we developed an international business model to associate the restaurant with different local businesses, as we realised this was a win-win situation, not only for Stars’n’Bars.”
For Didier and Kate, this evolution included the launching of the community-based Eco-Hub and raising awareness for all things that touch the environment, as well as a partnership with EVER Salon, the International Conference and Exhibition of Ecological Vehicles and Renewable Energies, which takes place at the Grimaldi Forum. For the first time, Stars’n’Bars will have a stand at the event, which this year runs from April 11 to 13.
“EVER is the perfect platform for us to promote customer knowledge,” Mr Rubiolo explained. “People can visit our stand and discover the organic menus we serve our clients, as well as hear about the Eco-Hub’s well-being workshops and conferences about the environment that we organise. They can also learn about Monacology.”
With the aim to help promote the use of energy efficient transport in the Principality, Stars’n’Bars’ Soul EV initiative is in partnership with Cavallari Motors and Kia Motors France, the second largest automobile manufacturer in South Korea and the creator of the Soul, the first urban Crossover 100% electric car sold worldwide.
A representative from Kia told Monaco Life, “This partnership allows us to draw attention to this rare technology with incredible visibility and, especially, with a well known figure in Monaco.”
For the third year running, Kia Motors France and Cavallari Motors are the Official Partner of EVER Monaco 2017. Visitors at the salon will be able to test drive the Kia Soul EV, the market’s first 100% electric crossover, which is meeting increasing success in France, ranking 6th among the best-selling electric vehicles in 2015 in metropolitan France.
Monacology welcomes over 1000 school children each June to its weeklong Eco Village on the port.
The Italian branch of AMADE (the World Association of Friends of Children), faithful to its vocation of help to children, has supported the Paediatric Institute Giannina Gaslini in Genoa, by presenting a cheque for €6,000 in favour of the “Children and Families” reception centre established within the hospital.
The cheque was presented in the presence of His Excellency Mr Robert Fillon, Ambassador of Monaco in Italy. The Istituto Giannina Gaslini is a state-of-the-art paediatric hospital that brings together all medical and surgical specialties.
A non-profit establishment with a wide international presence, the institute has nearly 500 hospital beds for children. Its top officials attach great importance to the social aspect of the care of hospitalised children and providing advice and comfort to families.
AMADE was founded in 1963 at the initiative of Princess Grace.
Monaco City Council has been organising a Home Delivery Service (DRD) managed by the Social Action Service, in collaboration with the central kitchen of the Princess Grace Hospital that prepares these meals, since 1987.
To date, DRD beneficiaries received a full meal for their lunch, as well as a soup or quiche, pizza for their evening meal. Following a survey carried out in 2015-2016, a number of respondents expressed the wish to be able to enjoy a true meal at dinner.
From January 1, beneficiaries may opt for two full meals at lunch and dinner, each consisting of an entrée, a dish, a cheese portion, a dessert and bread. Thirty people to date have chosen this option.
Another novelty for Monaco’s seniors is the extension of the mini-bus service. The minibus of the Social Action Service is at the disposal of the members of the “Time to Live Club” for their journeys between the club and their domicile.
By continuing to improve the quality of services offered by the Social Action Service, the City Council has underlined its determination to improve the services for elders in their daily lives.
