Davis Cup final Italy-Sweden 1998

ML: Like your friend Giuseppe Ambrosio, you are from Naples. Can you tell us about your tennis background?
DN: My tennis resumé includes 39 Grand Slam, 3 times in the Italian Olympic tennis team and 25 caps for Italian Davis Cup (finalist in 1998). I was also Winner of Wimbledon Junior. My best ATP ranking was No 57 for Singles and 25 in Doubles.

ML: Tell us a brief history about the International Tennis Academy (ITA), and what programs it offers?
DN: The ITA Academy offers a chance to be your best. My method is called “Easy Tennis” and it allows players to improve their game in only a few hours of training. We work with young players, from the age of 10, who train with me year around, and adults who come to our academy for a week or a long weekend.

ML: What are your tennis goals for the future?
DN: I hope to become one of the best coaches in the world and, eventually, Captain of the Davis Cup.

ML: Who are some of the players you have trained?
DN: I trained and managed Top 100 players such as Flavia Pennetta, Filippo Volandri and Filip Krajinovic.

ML: Can anyone train enough to be a pro?
DN: If a player trains hard from a young age, say around 14 to 16, of course he or she! will have a chance to become a professional tennis player.

ML: What makes a great tennis player?
DN: A great person makes a great tennis player, with a strong will, ability to make sacrifices and love to travel around the world.

ML: What does the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters mean for Monaco in terms of international recognition in the world of tennis?
DN: The Monte Carlo event sends out a great image for the Principality around the world. Photos of the centre court facing the sea are famous and most of the players love Monaco and its atmosphere.

ML: Do you think tennis is still interesting to watch even though the same male players have been dominating the game for years?
DN: I think that great matches like Federer/Nadal, Borg/McEnroe or Agassi/Sampras are of huge interest to a large portion of the public, even people who are not necessarily tennis fans. For me, having the same players at the top for a while has been good for the tennis world.

Monaco Telecom has fastest network

visite Privee S.A.S. le Prince Albert II

Monaco Telecom is launching the first commercial mobile network open to compatible terminals up to 1 Gbit/s. Monaco’s telecoms provider claims this represents a decisive step towards 5G, developed in partnership with Huawei. The Monegasque operator is one of the best performers in the world, it says.

After deploying the first European network in 450Mbps, Monaco Telecom optimised the entire infrastructure of its 4G network to offer speeds of more than 900Mbps. This performance is achieved with Huawei through the combination of a 10Giga Network Function Virtualised (NFV) core and a RAN cloud access solution.

The Monegasque mobile network is now ready to welcome the first smartphones able to support this new technology. The increase in available throughput also improves the experience of all users connected to the Principality, while respecting the environmental standards in force.

Martin Peronnet, Managing Director of Monaco Telecom, said: “One Gbit/s is today the maximum speed reachable by a terminal. We wanted to be among the first to offer these performances to our subscribers. This project was carried out in parallel with a very heavy investment to obtain an excellent indoor and outdoor coverage throughout the Principality, one of the most complex territories to cover given its topography and its density.”

“Huawei’s mission is to support operators in their digital transformation, especially by providing them with the best in cloud infrastructure and networking technologies,” said Karl Song, Managing Director of Huawei France. “Video is one of the pillars of growth for operators and we are proud of the technological partnership with Monaco Telecom, which offers a unique experience to their customers.”

Hotel workers strike in middle of Masters

Almost 80 employees of the Meridien Beach Plaza hotel in Monaco walked off the job on Thursday morning, starting at 6:30 am. The workers said that their demands for higher wages were not being addressed by management.

A union official, Franck Baret, said that the hotel manager has not responded to any of the workers’ demands. “It is a dialogue of the deaf,” he said. The protest is due to last 24 hours, but will be renewed if management fails to respond, the strikers said.

The industrial action took place on the first day of the Top Marques super car show and the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters event, both of which attract large numbers of visitors to Monaco. The same hotel, on avenue Princesse Grace, has faced strike action in the past, not always on the topic of wages.

Minister of State Serge Telle opened the annual Diplomatic Conference on Wednesday, April 19, organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. It takes place over two days and brings together the whole of Monaco’s Diplomatic Corps.

The Minister of State referred to Monaco’s place in this rapidly changing world and the great projects of the moment, before concluding that at a time when the Principality, like all Western societies, is sometimes questioning its future, he counted on Monaco’s diplomats to cultivate its openness, to be faithful to the Principality, to its identity and its dynamism, its history and its Princes.

All the members of the Government spoke on current affairs. On Thursday, the attention of the conference turned to Monaco’s relationship with Europe, the process of attracting new residents and other topics.

European tourism growing, says Monaco Tourist Authority

IMG_7442Monaco’s Tourist and Convention Authority reports that European tourism enjoyed its seventh consecutive year of growth, despite localised challenges, such as the attack last July that took the lives of more than 80 people in Nice.

The most visited region in the world welcomed 620 million international tourist arrivals last year, a modest but welcome two percent increase compared to 2015. Citing the European Travel Commission, the DTC said that Europe proved incredibly resilient to safety and security challenges with the majority of European destinations reporting continued growth towards the end of 2016.

Europe has more than a 50 percent share of the global tourism market, and tourist flows are expected to increase by three percent in 2017.

Iceland enjoyed the biggest growth in 2016, up 40 percent, followed by Cyprus (20 percent) and Slovakia (19 percent).

Frost this week devastates wine harvest

A spring frost overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, April 20, has devastated large parts of this year’s wine harvest. Particularly hard hit have been Champagne, Burgundy and Languedoc. Many growers are close to despair, because even if some of their crops survive, their vineyards cease to break even.

While last year late frosts had an impact on central France and the Loire, this year entire regions have been affected. Unseasonably warm weather earlier in the month had encouraged buds to appear prematurely, making the problem worse, according to wine professionals.

Also last year, mildew was a particular problem for wine growers, and yields of white wine have been depressed over several seasons. Now the frosts have added to the toll.

When temperatures drop to -2°C or below, damage can be widespread, and there is little that the vineyards can do to protect their crops. In Burgundy, where late frosts are more common, growers employ a range of measures such as lighting paraffin candles or using oil heaters every ten metre, for example. But if the wind rises, these effects are for nought.

The full extent of the damage to the 2017 vintage will become clearer over the next few days.
