Monaco Marine has a new business working alongside it at its base at La Ciotat shipyard, and the two companies expect to cooperate extensively.

French officials inaugurated the 200 metre dry dock at La Ciotat following a €15.8 million upgrade and renovation project. After Peter Lürssen pressed the button to flood the basin, Jean-Yves Saussol, CEO of La Ciotat Shipyards said, “In Lürssen we trust!”

Mr Lürssen said that the new dry dock will be managed by the Barcelona superyacht refit firm MB92. “There should be two places in the Mediterranean for refit and repair of very large yachts,” Mr Lürssen proclaimed during his inaugural speech. “One should be La Ciotat, and one should be Barcelona. What better chance to combine the forces of La Ciotat and Barcelona together?”

Mr Lürssen continued by stating, “For over 20 years, we have trusted MB92 with the refit and warranty work of our vessels. When we faced the situation of how to develop La Ciotat, it was a natural step for us to talk to our partners at MB92 and to our new partners in this region.”

He added that every one of the major players understands that by helping each other, we improve this location. “If we work together, all of our businesses prosper.”

Monaco Marine and CompositeWorks both use the 2,000 Syncrolift installed in 2007. There are other big plans in the pipeline at La Ciotat, including a project to build 10,000 square metres of workshops, offices and warehouses for subcontractors at the shipyard. (Feature image: Rudolf Simon)

Economic Board in top gear

More than 200 people from 470 member companies and key players in the Principality attended the recent Annual General Meeting of the Monaco Economic Board (MEB), when the 2016 report and programme for 2017 were submitted and approved and, as happens every three years, the Steering Committee was elected.

At the end of the AGM, Minister of State Serge Telle reiterated the government’s strong support for activities undertaken by the MEB.

In 2016, 50 initiatives targeted new investors and supported the growth of Monaco companies as part of its mission to seek and support foreign investors. The Monaco Invest team operated often in partnership with other institutions, both in the Principality and abroad, which led to more than 30 applications being logged from potential investors who meet Monaco’s needs. Agreements were also signed this year with foreign business organisations that have a base in the Principality (Italy and Brazil).

Meanwhile, thanks to its many partners, the Monaco Chamber of Commerce ramped up its activities to support Monaco companies. Locally, these included the ever-popular Members’ Rendezvous, as well as conferences, and hosting foreign delegations, with trade missions to Brazil, Russia and Azerbaijan.

A barometer of Monaco’s economy, the international procedures department processed a total of 6,500 documents, representing a 4.2 percent increase in turnover on 2015.

On the communications front, apart from promoting activities all-year-round, a highlight was the fifth Eco Awards, which put the spotlight on six remarkable companies in the Principality.

Looking ahead, highlights include trade missions to Slovakia and Moldavia accompanying official visits by HSH Prince Albert II (May 1-5), Israel (June 19-22) and Kazakhstan (July). Prospecting operations to London, Switzerland and Italy are also in the pipeline targeting suitable sectors such as Family Offices, yachting and ICT.

Back home, visits by foreign delegations, conferences and networking events give member companies a variety of opportunities to grow their business.

Concluding the AGM, Minister of State, Mr Serge Telle, reminded the meeting that “the MEB is a major strategic partner for the government, as we work together year round in pursuit of the same objectives the development, reputation and attractiveness of the Principality” as a business destination.

Rosemont’s new outpost will be known as Rosemont Management (Mauritius) Ltd, and its head will be Douglas Peters. Rosemont said it will offer “a full range of Mauritius company and foundation formation, corporate structuring and administrative services to clients located principally in Africa, but also in the Middle East, Europe and Asia, if and when appropriate.”

More details emerge of made in Monaco anti-drone rifle

Monaco’s MC-Clic has unveiled more of the features of its anti-drone equipment. The company presented its anti-UAV rifle at the recent SOFINS security equipment expo near Bordeaux. Although not a rifle in the traditional sense, the gear has a rifle-like body with three antennas. Its power pack can be either transported on the rifle operator’s back or on board a vehicle.

MC-Clic commented it was originally approached in 2015 to develop a machine to stop drones approaching the Prince’s Palace, which it completed development of its anti-UAV rifle in a matter of a few months.

The rifle has a maximum range of one kilometre and its batteries allow for 90 minutes of continuous use. Once intercepted, the drone can be forced to land, since all commercial UAVs have an automatic safety mode that launches landing once the radio signal from its operator has been interrupted long enough.

The French Special Forces have indicated an interest in the rifle, MC-Clic said.

HSH Prince Albert launched the 2017/2020 Monaco Explorations campaign at the Oceanographic Museum on Tuesday, April 4.

In many ways, this was a return, some 120 years later, to the maritime scientific explorations initiated by his great-great-grandfather, Prince Albert I.

The Yersin, the ecological research ship flying the Monegasque flag, will leave in August from the Port of Monaco. It will follow a longitudinal route between the Tropics, for a 36-month journey around the world.

The campaign will be based on the recommendations of a Scientific Steering Committee composed of ten internationally-renowned scientists whose primary objective will be to select research programmes and ensure the choice of projects. Science will therefore be the basis for the approach, which will be complemented by awareness raising, communication and mediation.

Monaco Ocean Week was the highlight of the event, which was broadcast live on Monaco Info and on the Facebook pages of the Prince’s Palace and Monaco Explorations.
