Prince and Princess demonstrate Honda’s clean car

monaco-hondaPrince Albert and Princess Charlene chose a Honda Clarity Fuel Cell model for their lap of honour at last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The hydrogen-powered Clarity is on sale in the US, but hasn’t yet arrived on European markets. However, the company will put a total of 185 demonstrations on the road in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the UK as part of a five-year campaign.

A first batch of six cars has arrived, and they will be seen on the road in London and Copenhagen as part of the Hydrogen for Innovative Vehicles (HyFIVE) EU demonstration.

The Clarity Fuel Cell has a range of 403 miles (650 kilometres) in the New European Driving Cycle test, but the US’s Environmental Protection Agency’s more stringent evaluation estimates the car can do 366 miles, or 589 kilometres, on a full tank of hydrogen, more than the Tesla Model S (335 mile/539 km) and the hydrogen-fuelled Toyota Mirai (321 miles/516 km).

The Clarity Fuel Cell is currently available in Japan and the US, where customers in California can lease a Clarity Fuel Cell from €328 a month. The offer also includes up to €13,350 of hydrogen refuelling. An electric and plug-in hybrid versions of the Clarity will soon be available in the US, according to Honda, starting in California and Oregon, but the range could be as low as 42 miles when running only on electricity.

Women of the Year honoured in Monaco next week

image012The Monte Carlo Prize for Women of the Year is an international prize that aims to distinguish women from all over the world who, in their personal or professional work, have achieved extraordinary things, sometimes without even realising it.

Under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II and the Presidency of Honour, HSH Princess Charlene, the presentation of this year’s 6th edition, created by journalist Cinzia Sgambati-Colman in 2012, will take place this year on Thursday, June 8, at the Grimaldi Forum.

The event will be sponsored by the Walgreens Boots Alliance, the world’s leading global pharmacy health and wellness company.

Each year, the Commission of the Woman of the Year Award, composed of eminent personalities, both men and women, awards two prizes: the first candidate will be rewarded for her exceptional projects carried out at an international level, and the second contender for her remarkable initiatives within the Principality of Monaco.

The “Woman of the Year” Monte Carlo Award has been made by Monaco architect-designer, Kamil, while the 2017 Special Prize is a trophy made in bronze by the Italian-Monegasque sculptor Beli.

This year’s theme will be “Women for Women”.

Sunday, May 28 may have been dominated by Grand Prix action in Monaco but it was also Mother’s Day, and HSH Princess Charlene paid a pre-race visit to the Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG) to meet new mothers and babies.

Spending time in the maternity ward with the newborns – five boys and two girls, including a set of twins – the Princess wanted to highlight that for many people Mother’s Day can be a difficult day.

“We have to support each other within our communities and, especially at this time, those for whom Mother’s Day is a painful one,” the Princess, whose Foundation is about educating children in water safety, told Monaco Life.

The Princess has been “very affected” by the events in Manchester on May 22 that killed 22 people, seven of whom were children.

“I am so blessed to have two such beautiful and happy children but I have many children around the world that I cherish and so when I see what happened in Manchester my heart is crying with those families who lost a precious loved one,” the Princess added, which is why as a sign of solidarity she compassionately chose to wear a black ribbon pin for all events in Monaco over the Grand Prix weekend.

Although a minute’s silence was observed last Thursday at 2 pm on the race circuit by the Princely couple and all the F1 drivers, Princess Charlene, who is Honorary President of Special Olympics Monaco, placed white roses at the altar of the hospital chapel on Sunday in memory of the young victims of Manchester. This followed a short ceremony for the blessing of the newest arrivals to the Principality and their mothers.

Princess Charlene’s own children, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, twins, were born at CHPG on December 10, 2014.
