Visiting doctor to cost more, gas prices fall

A number of price changes have come into effect in France from May 1. The cost of a visit to a general practitioner rises from €23 to €25, while the cost for children under six goes up to €30. The increase is linked to an agreement between the French state and 115,000 doctors, which was sealed last August and will last for five years.

There is good news for households that use gas. The regulated gas tariffs charged by Engie to about 5.8 million consumers in France will fall by 3.3 percent on average from May 1.

The long hand of the taxman has reached out to uses of Airbnb, who will now be charged between €0.20 to €4 per person per night. The move comes in response to hotel and registered guesthouse owners who have campaigned for a more level playing field. Airbnb, which will be responsible for collecting the taxes, has said that automating the process simplifies the payment of taxes for all parties.

Professionals and companies must in future make their annual tax returns by May 3, the second business day following Fête du Travaille.

In another change, “Patrim”, the online tax department, can now be consulted by the buyer or the seller of real estate as a guide to the value of property being bought or sold.

Gold Rush medal auction slated at Metropole

napoleon-gold-medal-gold-rush-lottery-leadMonnaies de Collection Monaco is about to offer at auction at the Hotel Metropole on May 20 an unusual gold medal with connections to the Californian Gold Rush. The medal of Napoleon III was issued by a French organisation that sponsored French settlers who sought a new life in the Gold Rush in the 1850s.

The large medal was minted in 1856 for the Société des lingots d’or, whose aim it was to send 5,000 unemployed Frenchmen to the gold mines of California and pay for their passage.

A lottery was held to choose the future settlers and registered applicants were selected randomly by the prefecture. The winners received a sum of money with a ticket to the United States. In order to attract attention, a jackpot was offered in the form of a gold ingot worth 400,000 francs, which was put on exhibition at Montmartre.

The medal in the auction was issued by the society at about the same time, but its purpose or role is unknown. The medal has an estimate of €30,000. Other artefacts connected to Napoleon III are being offered in the auction, which offers “perhaps the largest collection of Napoleon III patterns, including an exceptional set of uniface patterns from the 1 centime to the 100 francs,” MDC said.

Roca Team, Monaco’s basketball team, which has enjoyed great success in recent months, ended up with a place on the winners’ podium on Sunday, April 30, in a Champions League game in Tenerife.

The third place, won 91-77 against Venice, went some way to compensate for the loss to the Turkish team Banvit, 83-74, in the semi-finals in which Jamal Schuler made 20 points.

Monaco were ahead from the start, with Brandon Davies finishing as top scorer (17 points), ahead of Yakuba Ouattara (13), Dee Bost (12), Amara Sy (12) and Zack Wright (11). Zack Wright also had eight assists.

Government promotes vaccination programmes
As Vaccination Week, from April 24 to 30, came to a close, the Government has issued a reminder to parents that it’s essential to keep children’s records and update vaccinations and consult their children’s doctor if any doubt arises.

Not only does vaccination reduce the possibility of contracting a disease, it also reduces the risk of complications and mortality. Vaccination is the best protection against certain infectious diseases.
