Macron wins French presidential race

Emmanuel Macron, the centrist candidate in the run-off with Marine Le Pen in Sunday’s second round of the French Presidential election appears to have won the contest by a slightly wider margin than had been predicted during the last few days of campaigning.

According to an average of several exit polls on Sunday night, Macron coasted home with 62 percent of the votes against Le Pen’s 38 percent. The abstention rate was high, close to 30 percent, suggesting that voters who had supported the two other more traditional candidates in the first round had refused to choose “between the lesser of two evils” and had instead stayed away from polling stations. As Monday is WWII Victory Day (la fête de la victoire), a holiday in France, the long weekend may have also impacted voter turnout.

The campaign has been watched closely across Europe, particularly because Le Pen had campaigned to leave the euro, a move that would have further destabilised the European Union following Brexit. European leaders will welcome the poll result, as France is seen as one of the main pillars of European unity.

In his speech, Macron told supporters, “I will defend Europe … our civilisation is at stake.”

The last few hours of the election were electrified by allegations from the Macron camp that foreign hackers had leaked thousands of confidential campaign emails. None of these appeared to incriminate the candidate but underlined the threat to democratic processes. German leaders fear similar campaigns during forthcoming parliamentary elections in September.

A survey will be launched this week by the Government and Monaco’s power company SMEG that will provide more detailed information on energy consumption while at the same time help to identify possible improvements for the Principality to reach its carbon neutral objectives by 2050.

Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, and Thomas Battaglione, Managing Director of SMEG, told the local press on Friday that 5,000 residents will receive by mail a Data+ questionnaire, along with a letter from the government and SMEG.

An online version of the questionnaire will instantly provide the individual customer, whose identity will remain anonymous, with a breakdown of his energy use.

This first phase of the project will end on July 14, and the results published early 2018, although the process will continue over several years, to include a survey of Monaco businesses.

Currently 100 companies use 56 percent of the Principality’s total electricity consumption, however, Minister Gramaglia emphasised that in terms of energy reduction everyone – both individuals and businesses – is concerned. The entire Monaco population will be gradually solicited.

Data+ is expected to lead to more intelligent use of electricity and thereby contribute to the objective of reducing carbon usage in the Principality.

Yachting action moves to Monaco this week

The 2017 470 Open European Championship kicks off for the two-person Olympic dinghy for men and women, according to the Monaco Yacht Club. Following Round Three of the Sailing World Cup in Hyères, teams have headed for the Principality.

The provisional entry list features 90 teams representing 25 nations, and 14 of these teams competed at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The Yacht Club claims that this is an unprecedented gathering in the Principality.

YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri commented: “After organising the first J/70 European Championship in October 2015, then the Monaco Europa Cup in December 2016, this regatta is a perfect illustration of the competitive sailing policy our President HSH Prince Albert II wants to see in action.”

The Yacht Club de Monaco is fast establishing itself as an organiser of high level events thanks to its new facilities, designed by Lord Foster, to host regattas by organising an international meeting in collaboration with World Sailing at least once a year. The 2,000 members from 68 nationalities who are the lifeblood of the Club love it, as many are involved in the smooth running of these events in the “Flotte des Commissaires”.

Sunday saw the warm-up race and the competition starts in earnest on Monday, May 8 at midday. Qualifying stages continue through Thursday, May 11, with more Qualifying and Final stages on Friday. The Medal Race will take place on Saturday, May 13, with a closing ceremony at 7 pm. (Source and image: Monaco Yacht Club.)

A few weeks after the birth of six Mediterranean crested cormorants, the Department of the Environment has identified and photographed two young peregrine falcons born in a cleft of the Rock cliffs.

Once again, the birth of the Falco peregrinus in the Principality testifies to good environmental conditions, a necessity for this protected and emblematic species.

“We are delighted with these new births because they confirm the good ecological status and the privileged nature of this site, which retains a strong natural character even in the heart of the Principality,” said Valérie Davenet, Director of the Environment. She added: “We must ensure that we preserve the tranquility of these breeding areas for this patrimonial species, which is protected in Europe”.

The spotting of the hawks is part of the ornithological follow-up undertaken since 2011 by the Direction of the Environment, with the assistance of the Conservatory of Natural Areas of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

The 10th anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Principality of Monaco and the Republic of Korea was celebrated in Monaco on May 4, with a concert of traditional Korean music in the Rainier III Auditorium performed by the Korea National Orchestra.

The group, playing traditional Korean instruments, had come from Seoul for the occasion. At the end of the concert, a reception with Korean and Monegasque specialties was offered to guests, who were also able to mix with the musicians.

Patrice Cellario, Minister of the Interior, representing the Prince’s Government and HE Chul-min Mo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Monaco and his staff attended the evenings event.

HE Claude Cottalorda, Ambassador Of the Principality of Monaco in France, Isabelle Rosabrunetto, Director General of the Department of External Affairs and Cooperation and Daniel Boéri, Chairman of the National Council Culture and Heritage Committee, were also on hand for the commemoration.

The event highlighted the excellent relations between the two states. The Principality of Monaco and the Republic of Korea established Diplomatic Relations on 14 June 2007, when HE Il-hwan Cho became the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea, to Monaco.

The House of Givenchy has just opened its first spa in Monaco, within Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo, one of the most prestigious addresses in Monaco.

Designed by architect Didier Gomez, Spa Metropole by Givenchy reflects the House’s sophistication and modernity down to every last detail. The entrance sets the tone with its marble finish and proportions accentuated by sleek, bold black lines. Contemporary materials can be found alongside a digital plant wall throughout the interior, for absolute serenity.

All ten treatment rooms are decorated in nuanced shades of white, with embossed walls that evoke the lace of Haute Couture gowns. These include a double suite and a single suite equipped with a bath and private hammam.

The spa offers a “Heat Experience” package, which includes the sauna, hammam, caldarium, ice fountain and sensory showers. It also boasts a gym with all the latest equipment – TechnoGym, Kinesis Personal and Kinesis Stations – as well as a Pedi:Mani:Cure studio by Bastien Gonzalez. The background music was created by Béatrice Ardisson to accompany and personalise the experience in the treatment rooms, where guests can choose a playlist based on their own musical preferences.

Last but not least, a dedicated Givenchy beauty store brings together all the brand’s products, from makeup and skincare to fragrances. The exclusive L’Atelier de Givenchy fragrance collection makes its debut here in Monaco.

The hotel itself was built in 1889 in Belle Époque style and was fully renovated in 2004 under the direction of French designer Jacques Garcia, who knew how to preserve its Mediterranean charm while giving it a new lease of life that combines sophistication and delights for the senses. Three restaurants, run by Joël Robuchon and Christophe Cussac, offer a unique and varied culinary experience for the discerning palate.

Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo prides itself on offering its guests the very best in design, gastronomy and wellbeing. This is why Givenchy came to unveil a spa specifically designed for this exceptional hotel.
