MonacoTech launches website, startups invited to submit applications

IMG_7124MonacoTech launched its website Monday at midnight from which applicants can submit their business projects for either the Incubator or Accelerator program. The site –  www.monacotech.mc – in both English and French, is the entry platform for startups seeking support.

Headed by Fabrice Marquet, MonacoTech has been created by the Monaco government, in partnership with Monaco Telecom and French entrepreneur Xavier Niel. It has multiple objectives: to support innovative projects in business creation in Monaco; to create successful companies; to diversify the Principality’s economic activities by positioning itself as a credible and radiant innovation capital and to generate indirect economic spin-offs. In the long term, the role of MonacoTech is to perpetuate new companies and integrate them into the local economic fabric.

Local and international projects in any field related to technology, in fintech, healthtech, smart city, connected objects, and so on, will be studied by a jury of professionals. As previously announced, MonacoTech will have space totalling 820m2, which can accommodate up to 20 startups, that is to say about sixty seats, with a semi-public part and co-working space, from a cost of €150 to €300 per month. Startups will benefit from support in terms of advice, follow-up, support and financing during the initial stages of their creation. The premises are scheduled to open in the autumn of 2017.

Speaking at the CleanEquity conference in March, Minster of Economy Jean Castellini said, “Together, we will try to make Monaco a base of start-ups in the telecom industry but I would want the cleantech nuggets of tomorrow to be born, raised and incubated in the Principality, as well as healthtech and fintech.”

Much as expected, Juventus defeated AS Monaco in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals in Turin on Tuesday, with a 2-1 home win. The 4-1 aggregate victory put the Italian side into its second Champions League final in three seasons.

The odds were stacked against Monaco even before the game began. Juventus had won all previous 11 knockout ties against French opponents, while Monaco had never won in Italy.

Mario Mandzukic shot in the host’s first goal after an earlier header was saved by Danijel Subasic, but Dani Alves doubled the lead on Tuesday with a fast volley after the Monaco goalkeeper punched a clearance.

Monaco’s consolation prize was a goal from youngster Kylian Mbappe in the second half from a cross from Joao Moutinho. Mbappe’s goal was his team’s 150th this season in all competitions. Only Real Madrid (158) and Barcelona (160) have scored more from all the teams in the five big European leagues.

Juventus, who have not won this competition since 1996 and lost 3-1 to Barcelona in the 2015 final, will face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in Cardiff on June 3. Despite not winning the competition since 1996, no team has reached the Champions League final on more occasions than Juventus – six – level with AC Milan.

FEDEM reports on loans and grants to businesses

business-loan

The latest edition of Monaco Business News, published by FEDEM, the Monaco Federation of Employers, has as its main theme the topic of government aid to businesses.

As an example, a loan for new companies is reserved for Monegasques and spouses of Monegasques, provided that the activity concerned constitutes their only professional activity.

This form of help, established by Article 1 of Ministerial Decree No. 2004-261, is approved or not by a Commission chaired by the Minister of Finance and Economy. Funds can be used for rent and towards contributions to the Sickness Insurance Fund for Independent Workers (CAMTI) and the Self-Employed Pension Fund for Independent Workers (CARTI).

The beneficiary may also obtain an installation aid loan of up to €100,000 (and 80 percent of the value of the investment) for a maximum of ten years at a non-revisable rate equal to the 3-month EURIBOR rate at the date of the written request for the loan plus 0.75 points. A one-year grace period may also be granted. Objective of the loan: to assist in the fitting out and layout of the premises, the acquisition of the necessary furniture and equipment, the building up of the stock, and also the purchase of a right to a lease.

This loan can be prepaid without penalty at any time, with three months’ notice. However, it will have to be repaid immediately if the sums allocated are partially or otherwise used for other purposes if the beneficiary is in arrears for three instalments, if the business ceases or is sold.

Other grants and loans are available to Monaco-registered companies without the requirement of Monegasque citizenship, including grants towards projects that involve the use of solar energy and other renewable energy sources. Despite its title, Monaco Business News is available only in French.

To help celebrate its 10th anniversary, Peace and Sport, the politically neutral organisation that promotes peace through sport, has just issued a commemorative stamp with an emblem of peace.

Over the past decade, Peace and Sport, under the patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert, has played a pioneering role in promoting sporting values. The Monaco Association has been able to achieve many of the social objectives it has set itself, including programmes to build peace, reconciliation, the reduction of poverty, the development of education, and an improvement in public health in various projects around the world.

Joël Bouzou, President of Peace and Sport, said: “Peace and Sport is proud of the release of the commemorative stamp which illustrates the 10 years of the commitment of the Principality of Monaco to promote the values of sport as a tool for social change.”

The Stamp Office of the Principality will print 50,000 copies of the commemorative stamp at a price of €0.85. The Peace and Sport Memorial Stamp is now available at the Stamp Office, the Stamp and Mint Museum, the Post Office, stamp outlets in Monaco, and the Museum of the Post Office and the Carre d’Encre in France in Paris.

In addition, twenty “first day envelopes” will be on sale during the 10th edition of the International Peace and Sport Forum, to be held from December 6 to 8 in Monaco. The funds raised will be used to support Peace and Sport projects in the field and sports initiatives around the world.

Robot challenge for European youth

FIRST Global is hosting the world’s first international robot Olympics for high school students this July in Washington, DC, with nearly 160 nations in attendance, including Monaco and nearly 40 other European nations.

With a mission to spread science and technology leadership and innovation amongst the world’s more than two billion youth, FIRST Global has worked hard to ensure that countries from all six populated continents would be represented at the 2017 FIRST Global Challenge – especially those that have the most to gain from investments in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and infrastructure.

Home to some of the most prominent researchers across every region of scientific study, Europe understands the role of investing in STEM education and infrastructure so that the next generation of European scientists can continue to build upon their past successes. But in spite of these achievements, the nations of Europe have experienced significantly varying rates of growth and development, the organisers say.

“That is why FIRST Global is committed to working with all nations in Europe – such as Italy, Bulgaria, and Spain to name a few – to underscore the importance of STEM in order to create more secure and prosperous livelihoods for all. They – like so many others – understand that with increasing protectionist revisions from countries around the world at a time where the validity of science is being questioned, it is important, now more than ever, to empower the youth of the world through STEM.”

FIRST Global’s President is Joe Sestak, a former US Admiral and Congressman who commanded an aircraft carrier battle group during combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, served as President Clinton’s Director for Defence Policy in the White House, and headed the Navy’s anti-terrorism unit during 31 years of naval service.

“Retiring when his daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer, Mr Sestak entered politics on her recovery to fight for everyone to have the healthcare that saved her life. After leaving Congress, he taught at various universities while working for nonprofits focused on refugees, disaster response, education, and foreign policy.”

The FIRST Global Challenge takes place from July 16-18 in the DAR Constitution Hall, Washington DC.
