Monaco Back to the Future airs Tuesday

An audience was invited by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation on Friday, May 12, to an afternoon preview of Christine Oberdorff’s documentary film, Monaco Back to the Future, at Rainier III Auditorium. The documentary is due to be broadcast on Tuesday, May 16, on Ushuaia TV, a nature channel that is part of the TF1 Group.

The topic, as its name suggests, focuses on the Principality’s constant search for new technologies and cleaner machines for the future. Prince Albert, along with Venturi owner Gildo Pastor and some 600 viewers, attended Friday’s 60-minute screening.

The filmmaker followed Venturi’s VBB3, the fastest electric car in the world, first conceptualised in Monaco, from the Principality to the Salt Lake of Utah.

Ms Oberdorff went on to examine the history of the Principality and the pioneering role its Princes has played in promoting technological innovations and sustainable mobility, from the first helicopter to Solar Impulse, from electric vehicle racing to solar and hydrogen ships.

Accompanying the Sovereign Prince, Ms Oberdorff and the team from Ushuaia TV discovered these great technological adventures initiated or supported by the Principality, through a journey from Monaco to Columbus in the US, via the COP 22 of Marrakech.

It is not lost on the filmmaker than Monaco, despite its minuscule size of two square kilometres, is achieving huge advances in clean and green technology.

Victory in sight for AS Monaco

Falcao

Monaco’s end of season Ligue 1 cliff-hanger continues after an impressive 4-0 home win against Lille on Sunday night. Although finishing top of the French Ligue 1 is now almost assured, it won’t be until Wednesday night’s game against St Etienne – also at home – that Monaco’s league triumph is confirmed, if AS Monaco don’t lose.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain demolished St Etienne 5-0 on Sunday night, but lag behind Monaco by three points and a less impressive goal difference. If Monaco can avoid losing on Wednesday, it will be the first time since 2000 that they will have taken the title.

Radamel Falcao scored the first to two goals to his name just six minutes into the Lille game, with Silva scoring a third with help from Mbappe. Lille defender Junior Alonso diverted a shot into his own goal which took the final score to 4-0.

The season has been a remarkable one for the Monaco team, despite losing out on a Champions League place in the final in Cardiff in June. Not only has Falcao found his form again, but Kylian Mbappe – just 18 – has thrilled the crowds with his outstanding ability, and his goals. (Feature image: Facebook AS Monaco)

A Monegasque delegation visited Dakar from May 8 to 10 for a working visit focusing on the fight against sickle cell disease (SCD) as part of the strengthening of cooperation between Monaco and Senegal.

The fight against sickle-cell anaemia is a flagship programme of the Monegasque Cooperation, the Monaco agency responsible for international aid and cooperation. This haemoglobin genetic disease on the African continent affects 10 percent of the Senegalese population.

Extending the 2014 Agreement between the two countries, Isabelle Rosabrunetto, Director General of the Department of External Relations and Cooperation, and HE Awa Marie Coll Seck, Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Government of Senegal, signed an amendment for its renewal to support the policy to fight SCD in Senegal until 2020. The efforts already made have resulted in good progress.

On May 10, on the occasion of the African Sickle Cell Disease Day, Isabelle Rosabrunetto and Ibrahima Wone, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, inaugurated the Ambulatory Care Unit for Children and Adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease at the Albert Royer Children’s Hospital in Dakar. This unit, built thanks to the joint efforts of the two states, will take care of almost 4,000 patients during the next three years.

At the same time, the “West Africa-Madagascar Sickle Cell Network”, set up since 2013 with the support of the Monegasque Cooperation, met in Dakar for workshops. The Network is composed of doctors and representatives of patient associations from six countries (Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Madagascar).

Its objectives are to harmonise practices and better manage the know-how gained. To this end, tools and strategies for information, awareness and advocacy, as well as a guide for the management of sickle cell patients, are in the process of being developed.

President appoints political maverick as Prime Minister of France

In his first full day in office as President of France, Emmanuel Macron has named the Deputy Mayor of Le Havre, Edouard Philippe, as his prime minister.

The 46-year-old new head of government has been a strong supporter of conservative Alain Juppé, but his first foray into politics was as a Socialist. More recently he famously declined to give details of the value of his apartment in Paris and a house in Seine-Maritime. “No idea,” was his answer to enquiries from the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life (HATVP).

Born in Rouen to two French teacher parents, Mr Philippe’s credentials as a product of the highest echelons of the Parisian educational system are impeccable. He graduated at Sciences Po-Paris in 1992 and then at ENA, the École nationale d’administration.

After working alongside Alain Juppe during the fictitious jobs crisis of 2004, Mr Phillipe joined a law firm. He later became Director of Public Affairs at Areva. His own public political career was launched in June 2010, when he took over from Antoine Rufenacht at the Le Havre town hall.

Further appointments by president Macron during the next few days will be watched closely. (Feature image President Macron: Facebook Élysée – Présidence de la République française)

New migrant incident halts rail traffic

traintrackheadTrain service to and from Monaco Monte-Carlo was interrupted for almost two hours on the evening of Sunday, May 14, after a migrant was discovered electrocuted but alive on the roof of a TER train from Ventimiglia to Nice.

The man was discovered on TER 86050 at 6:30 pm at Carnolès station in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. He had been seriously burned on both legs, but was conscious. Rescue workers were able to remove him from the roof after the power was cut off.

Service in both directions was resumed shortly after 8 pm. A number of similar incidents have been reported in recent months, with several migrant fatalities on train roofs and in tunnels as refugees try to make their way into France from Italy.
