SNCF nightmare: no train service Nice-Monaco Saturday night

After leaving Isabell Kristensen’s fashion show in Cannes, I boarded the 7:54 pm train to Nice.

It was due to arrive around 8:20 pm. It’s now 10:42 pm and we are stuck outside of Nice, just west of the airport, due to a “signalisation” problem.

All train service on the Menton-Monaco-Nice-Cannes axis has been suspended, due to an electrical problem, which turned out to be a “technical bug”.

Emergency services are on the scene but for the moment, according to the National Police on board, no evacuation plan is in place.

The same officer said we are lucky that this did not happen around 4 pm, with the midday heat as the aircon was not functioninig. In his opinion, passengers will receive compensation from SNCF when they arrive at Nice station, as some people have missed flights at Nice-Côte d’Azur airport.

Around 9:10 pm, the SNCF controller announced they had asked for water for passengers. Half an hour later, we have nothing, except the smell of cigarette smoke gradually making its way across the cars.

Several heated arguments by passengers have erupted.

In January, the head of France’s SNCF, Guillaume Pepy, told his colleagues that the national train service operator can “do better” in 2017.

According to SNCF, 90.8 percent of TER trains were punctual during 2016, compared to 91.6 percent in 2015. A TER train is considered to be late-running if it is five or more minutes behind schedule.

The total delay was 2 hours 35 minutes. At 11:06 service was restored, although with exceptional backups.

When we left the train, there were no SNCF representatives to meet us, and certainly not that bottle of water that was mentioned. I asked one SNCF person about getting my ticket reimbursed and he very disinterestedly said, “I don’t know”.

Of course not.

Rapper 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, will give a private concert Sunday, May 21, at the Chapiteau in Fontvieille to celebrate AS Monaco’s Ligue 1 title.

For the first time in 17 years, Monaco’s football club clinched the French league title Wednesday after a 2-0 victory at home against St Etienne.

Doors open Sunday at 4:30 pm with the American rapper due to perform at 6 pm in front of AS Monaco players and staff, as well as Monegasque residents and season ticket holders only.

Entry is free upon presentation of an identity card and ticket, which normally should have been picked up – a maximum of 3 tickets per person – Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm, at Stade Louis II.

The private concert, which is expected to finish at 8 pm, was originally planned to take place in the Palace courtyard at 7 pm. (Feature photo: Flickr photosbyalyssa.com)

IEFTA hosts Doc Corner and reception in Cannes on Sunday

ieftareceptionThe Monaco-based International Emerging Film Talent Association (IEFTA) returns for this year’s 70th Cannes Film Festival (May 17-28) with four different initiatives.

First up, in partnership with the International Film Initiative of Bangladesh (IFIB), IEFTA will present Dhaka to Cannes, a biennial event in support of emerging filmmakers from Bangladesh. This year’s selected participants, Lubna Sharmin, Md Abid Mallick and Kazi Muntasir, will be brought to Cannes to take part in the Producers Workshop hosted by the Marché du Film.

This unique opportunity will include three days of intensive meetings with some of the world’s most prominent filmmakers, film executives and industry power brokers, identifying best practices and relevant programs while focusing on ways in which artistic and commercial efforts can be made sustainable across local and global markets.

A similar initiative, Addis to Cannes, was launched by IEFTA in 2010 in partnership with the Ethiopian Film Initiative to support young Ethiopian filmmakers through a career-developing trip to Cannes. Past participants have gone on to have their films shown in international festivals such as Berlin, Toronto and Venice, and sold to worldwide markets.

Through its mentorship initiative, IEFTA will also sponsor two filmmakers from Mongolia, Tsengel Davaasambuu and Mungunkhuu Distabazar, to the Producers Network.

In addition, as part of IEFTA’s sponsorship of Watersprite: The Cambridge International Student Film Festival, the runner-up of the Filmmaker of the Future prize – an award for filmmakers campaigning for change – will be brought to Cannes to take part in the Producers Workshop. This year’s participant will be UK-based Italian documentary filmmaker, Pietro Novello.

IEFTA will host on Friday, from 5 pm to 7 pm, a reception at Plage Royal for Dhaka to Cannes: A Celebration of Talent. The event will fete participating Bangladeshi filmmakers from this year’s inaugural Dhaka to Cannes initiative, as well as the Mongolian filmmakers, and Watersprite participants.

Lastly, this Sunday, from 10 am to 11:30 am, IEFTA will present its second annual Doc Corner event focusing on the enduring plight of refugees and migrants. Hosted by the Marché du Film, it will be followed by a reception from 5 pm to 7 pm on the beach of Plage 45, honouring filmmakers whose work gives a voice to refugees.

The mission of IEFTA, a Monaco non-profit, non-governmental organisation, is to discover and promote emerging cinema talent from around the world, encourage dialogue between filmmakers, promote cultural diversity and international understanding, and engage the art of cinema. Focusing on the world’s developing regions, IEFTA’s Global Film Expression provides opportunity and education to those with little to no access to resources for cinematic expression. This year marks the 11th anniversary of IEFTA-supported initiatives.
