Sunday, May 28 may have been dominated by Grand Prix action in Monaco but it was also Mother’s Day, and HSH Princess Charlene paid a pre-race visit to the Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG) to meet new mothers and babies.

Spending time in the maternity ward with the newborns – five boys and two girls, including a set of twins – the Princess wanted to highlight that for many people Mother’s Day can be a difficult day.

“We have to support each other within our communities and, especially at this time, those for whom Mother’s Day is a painful one,” the Princess, whose Foundation is about educating children in water safety, told Monaco Life.

The Princess has been “very affected” by the events in Manchester on May 22 that killed 22 people, seven of whom were children.

“I am so blessed to have two such beautiful and happy children but I have many children around the world that I cherish and so when I see what happened in Manchester my heart is crying with those families who lost a precious loved one,” the Princess added, which is why as a sign of solidarity she compassionately chose to wear a black ribbon pin for all events in Monaco over the Grand Prix weekend.

Although a minute’s silence was observed last Thursday at 2 pm on the race circuit by the Princely couple and all the F1 drivers, Princess Charlene, who is Honorary President of Special Olympics Monaco, placed white roses at the altar of the hospital chapel on Sunday in memory of the young victims of Manchester. This followed a short ceremony for the blessing of the newest arrivals to the Principality and their mothers.

Princess Charlene’s own children, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, twins, were born at CHPG on December 10, 2014.

Census results show growth in Monaco’s population

Lionel Galfré, Director of the Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE), presented the preliminary results of Monaco’s 2016 census to local media in the presence of the mayor, Georges Marsan, members of the Communal Council and the IMSEE team.

The City Council of Monaco is in charge of the census in the Principality, and the Mayor chairs the Census Commission. In 2016, the technical and logistical realisation of the survey, whose exclusively statistical aim is to better understand the population of the Principality, was entrusted to IMSEE, Monaco’s own statistical institute.

During eight weeks last summer, 50 enumerators, supervised by eight heads of sector, were in the field amassing the statistics used in the census. The Principality had been divided into almost 200 districts, and a full interpretation of the data will require more than 12 months.

However, some data is already known. In 2016, the resident population of Monaco has been estimated at 37,308 persons, up by 5.5 percent compared to 2008. A total of 139 different nationalities were identified. On June 7, 2016, a total of 19,534 residences were identified, 89 percent of them being used as principal residences.

Only 4 percent of homes, a total of 778, are second residences.

Three-roomed apartments or houses accounted for 29.5 percent of the total, two-roomed residences 26.9 percent, four-roomed dwellings 17 percent, and studios 15.3 percent. Five roomed residences accounted for 6.6 percent and six-plus roomed dwellings for just 4.6 percent of the total. Sixty-three percent of residences were occupied by at least one renter or sub-letting occupant.

The average number of vehicles for each residence was 1.4, while 28 percent of homes had one or more pets.

The age distribution of Monaco’s inhabitants showed a significant preponderance of older people. The largest age group, 65+, accounted for more than one-quarter, at 25.9 percent of the total, followed by the 50-64 age group, accounting for 22.5 percent of the total population. The younger than 18 age group accounted for just 15.9 percent, 18-35 16.9 percent and the 36 to 49 age group 18.8 percent. In this context it should be noted that Monaco holds the world record for the longevity of its population.

A total of 8,378 individuals held Monegasque citizenship in June, 2016. This translates into 22.5 percent of the total population. The next largest nationality is French, with 9,286 of the total, Italian, with 8,172, British, with 2,795, and Swiss, with 1,187. Russians, who saw the highest increase in residency since the last census in 2008, were numbered at 749, behind Belgians (1,073), and Germans (907).

In coming months much more data will become available, enabling the planning of public services and also providing private companies with valuable information for product and marketing purposes.

The Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) has just published a Focus on Education. At the end of December, 2016, a total of 6,328 pupils, from Kindergarten to Terminale (graduating year), were enrolled in the various establishments in the Principality, 70 percent in the state sector.

Boys are slightly more numerous than girls (50.3 percent versus 49.7 percent) and 80 different nationalities are represented, with Monegasques making up 17 percent of the total, or 1,200 pupils. The average class size is 21 students.

A total of 601 teachers – average age 45 – work in the sector, and two-thirds are women. In the Principality: the French represent more than half of the teaching staff. Monegasques comprise more than 40 percent of public school teachers, but less than 10 percent in the private sector.

A full report on education can be found at: http://www.imsee.mc/Publications/Focus

The Animal Fund (TAF), a Monaco-registered non-profit association, is organising what promises to be a fun day as well as a very useful exercise removing rubbish from the sea.

On Thursday, June 8 – World Oceans Day – volunteers are invited to meet at the Cap d’Ail sailing club at 9:30 am from where they will leave on paddleboard or kayak to pick up trash out of the sea. Sign up at info@theanimalfund.net to book your equipment.

“If you have your own, just join us,” Beverly Holt, who’s a TAF supporter, told Monaco Life.

The oceans cover 71 percent of the earth’s surface and contain 97 percent of the earth’s water and deliver more than 50 percent of our oxygen, and so it is up to all of us to contribute to their cleanliness. World Oceans Day will be celebrated by hundreds of similar events across the globe.

The plan is to return to the club at noon and enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.

Recipe for Monaco’s coolest charity challenge ever

To make the coolest charity challenge, combine a cause, like “drowning claims a life every 85 seconds”, with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation that was set up in 2012 to address “one of the greatest silent killers on our planet” by teaching children essential water safety skills and how to swim.

Add some worldwide awareness to the cause with one crazy sport event, the Riviera Water Bike Challenge on June 4. The 21-km relay race will involve ten teams of five, who will pedal on Schiller S1 water bikes, what Luxury Travel refers to as “This Bizarre New Watersport Is Taking Over the World”. The idea comes courtesy of Gareth Wittstock, Princess Charlene’s brother, and the choice of a relay is the embodiment of teamwork and team spirit.

Throw into the mix a desirable destination where the event will be held: Mediterranean Sea. The relay will start at Plage Nikaia in Nice and wind along the coast until it finishes at the Monaco Yacht Club.

Spice it up with 20 major sports celebrities, say F1 drivers, rugby giants and Olympians – with two stars assigned to each of the ten teams – and have as many as possible be on hand for the entertaining team draw press junket at the Monaco Yacht Club, where they will take the shiny Schiller S1 for a test drive.

  • Paula Radcliffe, marathon world record holder
  • Simon Shaw and Dan Luger, both rugby world champions with England
  • Esteban Lozada, former Captain of RC Toulon rugby team and Argentinian international
  • Luciano Orquera, former Italian international rugby player
  • Mika Häkkinen, F1 World Champion
  • David Coulthard, former Formula 1 driver
  • Kevin Crovetto, Olympian gymnast
  • Pierre Frolla, four-time world record holder in free diving and ambassador for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation

Toss in a few choice team names – like COCC, Slammers and Monaco Police – for attention-grabbing Riviera Water Bike Challenge headlines.

IMG_3564

Let set until June 3 when the teams will come together for the first time at the Monaco Yacht Club. Over a barbecue meal and beverages, they’ll discuss tactics for following day’s race, remembering the rules: one sports celebrity must start the race, and the other finish. The three additional team members, who will be following the water bike in an inflatable boat, can pedal as much or as little as they wish.

Mix all these together, along with a fundraising Gala that was held in March 24 at the Monaco Yacht Club, and you have a recipe for success.

The June 4 Riviera Water Bike Challenge will help finance the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation’s project in Burkina Faso. In partnership with the Monaco and Burkinabe Red Cross, they will transform the Monegasque Pavilion from the Milan World Expo 2015 into a centre to train lifeguards and swim instructors, as well as operate as a first aid and CPR unit, which will focus on countries in the West African region.
