Businessman kept wallet containing 12,000 euros

Monaco’s Criminal Court has been told that a 33-year-old Israeli living in Russia kept a wallet containing 12,000 euros he had found in the Fairmont Monte Carlo.

The resident, a father of three, committed the offence last August and was quickly apprehended by the police using video surveillance. When arrested, the defendant said that the wallet had contained 7,500 euros, but added that he was prepared to make up the difference in the two amounts.

He also told the police that he believed the wallet had fallen from his wife’s handbag, although video cameras told a different story. He was alone when he picked up the wallet.

Prosecuting counsel said that the accused earned 15,000 euros a month but had taken advantage of the opportunity to steal 12,000 euros. Prosecutor Cyrielle Colle called for a warning from the court and a fine corresponding to his monthly income to give him cause for reflection.

Defence counsel said that the defendant – absent from the hearing – was an honest businessman who suffered from a moment of weakness.

The court decided on a suspended prison sentence of 15 days.

HE Ms. Carole Lanteri, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Principality to the United Nations Office in Geneva and Ms. Chrystel Chanteloube, Third Secretary, participated in the Sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health organised by the World Health Organisation in Ostrava, Czech Republic, from June 12 to 15.

A video message from HSH the Sovereign Prince was shown during the opening ceremony, in which he recalled that 13 million deaths each year are caused by environmental pollution, including more than one million children.

On the strength of this scientifically proven fact, the European region, which has been a pioneer in this field for more than 25 years, must continue and intensify its efforts, the Prince said.

The Ostrava Conference concluded with the adoption of a declaration to strengthen synergies at the national level in order to accelerate efforts to reduce sources of pollution and improve health, in particular by increasing collaboration in the European region.

The ministerial conferences of the European Environment and Health process provide a unique platform for cross-sector policy. This platform brings together the relevant sectors and partners to develop environmental and health policies and measures and so advance the work carried out in these areas in the WHO European Region .

Monaco’s initiative brings together small country postal services

La Poste Monaco, with the support of the Monegasque authorities, is organising the launch meeting of a “Small Countries” working group.

The aim is to take advantage of the very short decision-making times in these smaller states to implement innovative solutions in line with the aims of the PostEurop Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Circle, to improve the performance of our postal companies, La Poste Monaco said.

“The similarities of our organisations and their ability to quickly test new innovative concepts and to swiftly decide their implementation are a significant asset, especially in the face of current environmental, social and societal challenges,” La Poste Monaco added.

For example, PostEurop’s CSR has identified a number of topics of common interest among the “small countries” to meet their expressed need to share experiences, work together and capitalise on effective solutions.

The first step will be a workshop in the Principality on June 21, 22 and 23 on the theme: “Corporate Social Responsibility Applied to Small Countries, a lever for innovation and performance in the service of their sustainable development”.

Nine countries, including Monaco, represented by Jean-Luc Delcroix, Director of La Poste in the Principality, will take part in this event: Guernsey, Luxembourg, Montenegro, San Marino, the Vatican, Monaco, Switzerland and two observer countries, Romania and Bosnia Herzegovina.

La Poste Monaco will take the chairmanship of this group, which is to meet once a year.
