The Monaco government and Alipay, the world’s biggest online and mobile payment platform, operated by Ant Financial Services Group, have signed a memorandum of understanding to allow Chinese customers to pay without cash in Monaco.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday, June 27, at Thermes Marins by Minister of State Serge Telle, Douglas Feagin, Senior Vice-President of International Development at Ant Financial Services Group, and Tony Duan, Vice President of Fliggy Travel, the new name for Alitrip.

The Minister of State said: “The future is mobile payment, and China is at the forefront of innovation in this field. We are delighted to be able to offer these contactless payment methods to Chinese tourists visiting our Principality and we hope to reap the benefits of this partnership.”

The Chinese market is increasingly important for Monaco, although the 2016 figures were significantly lower than in 2015 due to the attack in Nice last July.

Operated by Ant Financial Services Group, Alipay launched in 2004, and now has more than 450 million active users and more than 400 partner financial institutions. In addition to online payments, Alipay is entering the in-store payment market both in China and abroad. More than eight million shops accept Alipay in China and more than 120,000 shops in the rest of the world.

In Monaco, several hotels, restaurants, luxury boutiques and souvenir shops have already joined the Alipay platform. The signing of the MoU is expected to lead to a growth of the number of businesses accepting this type of payment in the Principality.

Monaco plays crucial role in coral study

Conf presse CSM-Tara Pacific 27-06-17The scientific schooner Tara continues to travel the Pacific Ocean in an attempt to unveil the biodiversity of coral reefs, an important factor in understanding major environmental challenges.

The collection of data that Tara collects during this two-year voyage is none other than an immense and unprecedented library of 40,000 samples that will make it possible to carry out the first global study of coral reefs on an ocean scale.

Initiated by the Tara Expeditions Foundation and coordinated on a scientific level by the Scientific Centre of Monaco (CSM) and Paris Institute of Science and Letters, this expedition will enable the study of an ecosystem essential to the equilibrium of the oceans.

The biodiversity of the reefs represents about 30 percent of the marine species in less than 0.2 percent of the total surface area of the oceans. Particularly threatened by global warming and changes, they are important indicators of the health status of our oceans.

Romain Troublé, Managing Director of the Tara Expeditions Foundation, said, “Tara Pacific, comprised of 70 researchers from 22 laboratories around the world, brings together their expertise to study this fabulous ecosystem and to provide an inventory for future generations.”

The contribution of the CSM is major: for nearly 30 years, it has developed methods of cultivation in controlled conditions that are still unique in the world.

“Among the corals we grow, three species are being precisely studied during Tara Pacific. Analysis of their genomes, thanks to Genoscope DNA sequencing, will serve as a reference for all the reefs studied throughout Tara’s journey. We will be able to offer long-term expertise to many laboratories,” said Denis Allemand, Director of Monaco’s CSM.

Alongside the research institutes, the Tara Expeditions Foundation and its patrons, the Principality of Monaco has invested heavily in this project through the Prince Albert II Foundation. “Our partnership is not just financial support. It is above all a relationship of trust that has been consolidated during nearly 10 years of exchanges and which has made it possible to propose together technical and political solutions to the major challenges of the oceans “said Philippe Mondielli, Scientific Director of the Foundation.

A reported increase in salary from €80,000 to €700,000 per month has been offered to 18-year-old soccer star Kylian Mbappé in an attempt to stave off the temptation of Real Madrid, PSG and the other clubs in the chase to sign him.

The revelation of Monaco’s offer of a 900-percent wage increase came after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez met with Mbappe’s father, who takes a keen interest in his son’s career.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have all been strongly linked with a move for the prolific forward who is rated the one of the best young talents in Europe.

Mbappe scored 26 goals last season and played a major role in helping Monaco win the French Ligue 1 title.

European champions Real Madrid have allegedly bid €130 million for the youngster, who has said that his priority is making the right decision for his playing career.

Monaco striker Radamel Falcao reportedly also earns in the region of €700,000 a month.
