The Monaco Economic Board (MEB) has reported that its economic mission to Tel Aviv from June 19 to 22 was a considerable success. Twenty-six people representing 19 companies from the Principality made the trip in search of new opportunities. Multiple meetings, conferences, and networking sessions allowed the entire delegation to discover the “Startup Nation”.

Work began in the conference rooms of the Royal Beach Hotel, where the MEB organised a business forum in partnership with the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Israel (FICC). After the bilateral presentations and the signing of a cooperation agreement between the MEB and the FICC, participants took part in an intense B2B appointment session that lasted almost three hours.

In total, no less than 160 contacts were established, 42 percent of which were described as useful, which is a very promising ratio, the MEB said. A total of ten projects were initiated during the mission.

MEBTELThe next day, Wednesday, June 21, delegates witnessed the extraordinary dynamism of the new economy in Israel, the country that has the most startups per capita in the world and which has seen the birth of many unicorns.

A session hosted on the Google Campus saw entrepreneurs from the Principality attending a conference in which several high-quality speakers outlined the recipes for their success, such as Zvi Limon, partner in the venture capital fund Magma VC, specialising in ICT investments. According to him, the success of the country is explained by its corporate culture with a true taste of risk and the excellence of training.

With this positive image, access to capital is relatively easy. Investment in ICT in Israel has gone from €339 million ($385 million) in 2010 to nearly €4.4 billon ($5 billion) in 2016.

France and the Principality of Monaco have contributed funding to the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) – a collaborative effort of the CITES Secretariat, INTERPOL, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the World Bank and the World Customs organisation – to strengthen criminal justice systems and frontline efforts to combat wildlife crime.

France’s contribution of €85,000 for activities in 2017 and Monaco’s promise of €200,000 over the next four years are the first of a number of pledges received from CITES Parties at CoP17 in Johannesburg in 2016 and at the Hanoi Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade, also in 2016, to support and further facilitate the efforts underway by the Consortium.

“Thanks to the generous financial contributions from France and the Principality of Monaco, ICCWC will be able to enhance its support to range, transit and destination countries affected by illicit wildlife trafficking,” said John E. Scanlon, CITES Secretary-General, adding the funding from the two countries “makes an important contribution to enabling ICCWC to deliver support and capacity building to step up the fight against wildlife crime”.

ICCWC fights international wildlife crime at different levels: nationally, regionally and internationally. “This cross-cutting initiative has already demonstrated its effectiveness in the development and provision of indispensable tools for states in law enforcement and criminal justice as well as in social and economic fields”, said Gilles Tonelli, Monaco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

“For these reasons, the Principality of Monaco recognises ICCWC as an essential mean to achieve the sustainable development goals.”

A delegation from Monaco, composed of Isabelle Rosabrunetto, Department of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and Dr Alexandre Bordero, Director of Health Action, has been taking part in the fourth High Level Meeting of the European States of the World Health Organisation, held in Malta on June 26 and 27.

The theme of this session is “building resilient societies”, and follows a summit held in the Principality on October 11 and 12, 2016. While more general questions are on the agenda, such as “How to improve the ability of societies to resist and then rebound from health crisis situations”, more concrete issues like ensuring enough skilled health personnel, were also considered.

Access to the most innovative medicines and how to fight obesity were also on the agenda. The WHO European Small Country initiative includes eight countries – Andorra, St Marino, Malta, Montenegro, Luxembourg, Iceland, Cyprus and Monaco –and aims to increase co-operation between states which, due to their size, are confronted with special public health problems.

The Monaco Government Tourist Office in New York has recently been awarded a distinction by readers of Incentive magazine, who have chosen to recognise the office with the prestigious “Platinum Partner Award 2017”.

The prize was determined by an online vote to mark the quality of service offered to clients.

The winners of this award, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, are selected by the most qualified decision makers within the private sector, and rewards destinations and service providers who, in the readers’ view, played a key role in motivating their employees and clients over the past year.

Cindy Hoddeson, Director of the Monaco Tourism Office in North America, said initiatives such as dollar-guaranteed packages and VAT refunds on accommodation and food costs, in addition to quality of service, encourage event organisers to evaluate Monaco in such a positive way.

Ms Hoddeson also mentioned “this award also rewards attentive and tailor-made service”.

Winners are elected on the following criteria: destination, establishment or travel service, quality and degree of professionalism, degree of credibility and promotional support. The complete list of winners will be published in Incentive magazine’s July/August 2017 issue and on their website.
