A jetty on Port Hercules has been renamed in honour of one of the Principality’s most ardent proponents of the Monegasque language.

In the presence of Prince Albert, Mayor Georges Marsan and members of the Communal Council, as well as official representatives of the highest authorities of the Principality, the inauguration of the Jules Soccal Jetty (formerly Central T) of Port Hercules, took place on Thursday, July 6.

Mr Soccal’s daughter Josiane Campana and her grandson, Olivier, surrounded by friends and relatives, were also present for the event.

Born in 1907 in Monaco-Ville, Jules Soccal was a “Monegasque of blood and heart, who was an ardent defender of our language and our traditions,” the Mayor said.

After starting his professional career in a printing office, he joined the Communal Library and then the Cap-Fleuri nursing home. In the early 1950s, he joined the Naval Service as Secretary from where he was promoted to the position of Inspector of Fisheries and Maritime Security, then Chief of the Naval Secretariat in 1962, and later as Marine Administration Officer five years later, before retiring in 1972.

A great enthusiast of the sea and a keen fisherman, Jules Soccal also participated in numerous regattas, representing Monaco in Algiers, Ostend and Barcelona in particular. A Knight of the Order of St. Charles, Mr Soccal was very involved in the life of his country and initiated Monegasque language courses with Lazare Sauvaigo.

In 1971, he brought together his two passions by writing and publishing: “The Monegasque vocabulary of the navy and the sea.” He also wrote a short story and poems.

In 1999, the MEB held its first economic mission to Tunis, accompanied during a trip by Prince Albert. Since then, three other missions have been held in Monaco and Tunisia, allowing Monegasque entrepreneurs to discover quality local partners, encouraging them to invest in Tunisia.

During the latest visit, a Business Forum with UTICA – the Tunisian Union of Industry, Commerce and Handicrafts – has led to the signing of a cooperation agreement with the MEB.

The delegation is made up of 35 people, representing 18 Monaco entities, operating in transport, plastics, ICT, insurance, trading, coffee machines and health.

The Association of Businesswomen of Monaco will also benefit from this trip to sign an agreement with the National Chamber of Businesswomen of Tunisia.

Tunisia, which is a symbol of democratic transition in the region, has always been able to count on the Principality. Today, the country is returning to growth – 2.5 percent expected in 2017 – led by tourism and agriculture, which have regained their dynamism supported by a policy of diversification of the economy.

Tunisia is a favoured destination conducive to the development of Monegasque enterprises.

France says no more new diesel or petrol car sales

France’s environment minister Nicolas Hulot wants to the end of the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040. Beyond that date, no new diesel or petrol cars will be sold in France, Mr Hulot said on Thursday, July 6.

Presenting his climate plan at a press conference, he said that the move would be “a real revolution”. Not only will the banning of cars with internal combustion engines help fight climate change, it will also have a positive impact on health, he said. French automakers have the capacity to achieve the desired result, the minister said.

Drivers will be offered a premium to trade in their old polluting vehicles, a “transition bonus” that will replace a pre-1997 diesel vehicle or pre-2001 petrol car with a new or used cleaner vehicle. The Minister did not specify the amount of the premium. Earlier this week Volvo said it will stop making petrol or diesel-only cars in 2019, but will switch to hybrid or battery-powered systems.

Nephew of the famous sculptor “Caesar”, René Baldaccini, is also an eclectic artist, inspired by the likes of Dave Arman, Lino Ventura, Yves Montand, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Coluche, Johnny Hallyday, and many others.

Now Mr Baldaccini has brought together his two major enthusiasms, sculpture and motorsport, to create a special piece for the Automobile Club of Monaco (ACM).

The work was the inspiration of an army general, David Galtier, who discussed the idea with Michel Boeri, President of the ACM. Mr Baldaccini created the sculpture from the metal plates used in the Monte-Carlo Rallies, welded together and placed on a steel base.

“It is truly an honour for me to have made this unique piece for the Automobile Club of Monaco,” the Marseille artist said, whose art now occupies pride of place in the club’s garden, in full view of the restaurant.
