The city of Nice has prepared a major commemoration on Friday, July 14, to honour the victims of last year’s horrific Bastille Day atrocity on the Promenade des Anglais.

Between 9 am and 6 pm, 12,000 blue, white and red plaques will be distributed to the public on Quai des Etats-Unis. The immense message made up by the individual plaques will be filmed by a drone and shown on screens at around 8 pm.

A military parade will take place on Place Masséna, in the presence of 2,000 guests, from 4:30-6:30 pm. In the air, the Patrouille de France will also pay tribute to the victims, to the security forces, doctors and nurses and all the professionals who mobilised 12 months ago in the wake of the attack, which took the lives of 86 people.

President Macron is expected to join the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, during the ceremonies.

In the evening, the Promenade des Anglais will be the focal point of events, with the showing of the film “Himalaya”, the reading of texts by eight actors, a concert by the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra and the Choir de l’Opéra. A fireworks display and a concert that will end with the Marseillaise and an ultimate Nissa la Bella. Eighty-six giant light beams, one for each of the victims, will shine out over the Bay.

At 10:45 pm, the public will disperse to the sound of Pachelbel’s Canon.

Major road diversions are planned during the day.

The Ramoge Accord has launched its second summer campaign “Je navigue, je trie”, which will raise awareness among boaters of the Port de Fontvieille and Port Hercules again this year.

This campaign, carried out in collaboration with the Urban Development Department, the Monaco Harbour Operations Company, the Yacht Club of Monaco and “Gestes Propres”, aims to reduce marine litter by distributing bags destined for sailors to collect and sort their rubbish.

At the request of the Prince’s government, the bags offered to boaters will no longer be made of recycled plastic material but of biodegradable material, in order to meet the environmental requirements of the Principality.

The harbourmasters of the ports of Fontvieille and Hercules, as well as the marina of the Yacht Club, will make available two bags for collection, one for the waste to sort and one for waste that cannot be recycled.

This initiative aims to encourage everyone to respect the marine environment. It also meets the commitments that link the ports of Monaco to “Clean Ports” certification. “I sail, I sort” is a simple but effective contribution to help preserve our marine heritage.

Strike’s effect will be limited, says Air France

Hop!, the Air France’s short- and medium-haul low-cost subsidiary, plans to operate more than 80 percent of its flights on Thursday, July 13, the first day of a six-day pilot strike. Shuttle flights between Paris Orly and Nice, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Marseille will operate normally, Air France said.

SNPL, the biggest of the three unions supporting the movement, has said that 57 percent of its members polled favour the stoppage. The dispute centres on working conditions, weekend and shift work, rather than salaries.

Hop! operates 600 daily flights to about 50 destinations and carried more than 13 million passengers in 2016.

AS Monaco’s Sporting Director, Antonio Cordon, whose departure was announced on Monday, July 10, left the club due to frustration over player departures, according to unconfirmed reports.

Cordon had signed up with League winners Monaco for three years, but lasted just one season. Although he was very well aware that several star players would be sold on for a huge profit, he felt he was not been given enough control over departures by club Vice President Vadim Vasilyev.

So far, Bernardo Silva has left for Manchester City while forward Valere Germain has returned to his native Marseille.

There is still wild speculation over the destinations of Kylain Mbappe, Benjamin Mendy and Fabinho, but all three are likely to leave this summer. Thomas Lemar has already agreed terms with Arsenal.
