Monaco open season with 3-2 win

Monaco opened their Ligue 1 title defence by coming from behind twice on Friday night for a 3-2 victory against Toulouse at Stade Louis II.

Zinedine Machach scored for the visitors after just six minutes before Jemerson equalled for the champions with a header after 28 minutes.

Radamel Falcao rescued Monaco with the second goal for the home side after Andy Delort had shocked the hosts with a goal for Toulouse 53 minutes into the game.

The thrills continued as, with 20 minutes of the game remaining, Kamil Glik headed home Joao Moutinho’s free kick from close range to rescue Monaco’s fight back.

However, Monaco’s three-point win was somewhat marred when Kylian Mbappe was injured after 74 minutes and had to leave the field with an apparent knee injury. Eighteen-year-old Mbappe scored 26 goals in 44 appearances for Monaco last season and has been the target of transfer bids from Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Monaco bans over-the-counter codeine-related medicines

The Monaco government has announced that it will ban the sales of over-the-counter drugs containing codeine, including dextromethorphan, ethylmorphine and noscapine. These will be available only on prescription, bringing the Principality into line with France.

The move has been made due to the abuse of codeine-based medicines by many adolescents and young adults, the government said on Friday.

Patients will no longer be able to obtain a drug containing any of these four ingredients without a prescription from their doctor.

Nice, Marseille, to host Olympic events

While Paris was been chosen to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games as its rival candidate Los Angeles agreed to take on the 2028 Games, the capital will need to enlist cities such as Nice, Marseille, Bordeaux, Lyon, and others to host many of the events.

It is understandable that sailing events could not be hosted in Paris itself, and Roucas Blanc has been selected as the maritime base. Marseille and Nice will be the venues for football. Marseille will host part of the Olympic and Paralympic events. The Allianz Riviera stadium can host 35,000 spectators, while Marseille can accommodate almost twice as many.

The local venues will have to bear the costs of hosting the Olympic events, a figure expected to fall between €20-€25 million.

The Paris 2024 Olympics eco-friendly bid plans “to slash carbon emissions by more than half compared to the last two Games in London and Rio”.

Prefecture bans watering of lawns

As drought conditions blight, the Alpes-Maritimes department was placed in a “severe” fire risk Saturday. The prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes announced restrictions on the use of water in certain areas. The new bans take the alert level to three out of four in the Cagnes, Brague, Paillon, Roya, Estéron and the Haut Var districts.

Individuals will no longer have the right to water their lawns, either by day nor night. On the other hand, watering is allowed for flowers and vegetable gardens from 8 am until 8 pm. Cars can no longer be washed unless at an approved washing station.

Filling of swimming pools becomes subject to municipal authorisation, while golf courses will have to reduce their water consumption by 60 percent. Stadiums and sports facilities will only be able to water their pitches from 8 am until 8 pm.

The washing of roads and driveways is also forbidden. The Var is not yet concerned and remains on “alert.”
