Ravi Lunia, Director of Faidee, the world’s largest Burmese ruby company, has hosted the inaugural Burmese Ruby Exhibition in Monaco. The highlight was the August 3 unveiling of “The Imperial Necklace,” an exceptional natural “pigeon blood” Burmese ruby necklace of approximately 130 carats.

The necklace is the signature piece of the exhibition of more than 100 jewels by Faidee made with the family-owned company’s collection of unheated Burmese rubies, the largest collection of natural Burmese rubies ever held in one place, according to Mr Lunia.

“It is a piece of jewellery that no one could have created before, due to the scarcity of Burmese rubies with this highly desired natural “pigeon blood’ colour,” Mr Lunia said. “Even those of us within Faidee never imagined that something like this would one day come to life.”

This first ever-exclusive exhibit in the history of jewellery industry, showcasing the largest and most valuable collection of its kind in the world, continues at the Salon Belle Epoque at the Hermitage Hotel until August 21.

Former AS Monaco player Rafael Marquez is suspected of having been involved in a vast network of drug trafficking. All his property in the United States has been frozen, according to the US Treasury.

Raul Flores Hernandez is the alleged leader of the network, which involves 22 Mexican citizens and 42 other “entities”, according to the American authorities. Mexico has seized property belonging to Mr Hernandez and his network, known as the Flores drug trafficking organisation, including the Grand Casinos in the Guadalajara region of western Mexico.

US authorities point out that these sanctions come after several years of joint investigations with their Mexican counterparts.

Rafael Marquez has denied involvement. He said: “I categorically deny any relationship with this organisation and with the events in question.” He said he was trying to clear his name, adding that he had voluntarily presented himself to the Mexican Ministry of Justice.

Rafael Marquez played for AS Monaco from 1999 to 2003, during which time the team became becoming champion of France, in 2000. He then joined FC Barcelona, where he still plays.

Monaco joins Convention on bees

As part of the partnership with the Parco Europeo Alpi Marittime and the Mercantour National Park, the Government of Monaco is joining up to the new Convention signed on August 3: “Bees of the Mercantour-Alpi Marittime territory: diversity and pollination.”

This text will help all parties to refine their knowledge of the diversity of wild bees within the Mercantour-Alpi Marittime region. The Convention will also help to understand interactions between wild bees and heritage environments such as hay meadows. These are important areas for these species, which help to ensure pollination.

The Convention also provides for an inventory in the Principality to identify the different species of bees. This project complements the ATBI/IBG Mercantour-Alpi Marittime programme, which was initiated in 2008 with the support of the Prince’s Government and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

An exhaustive list of species, together with a better knowledge of their lifestyle and interactions, should enable managers of these areas to propose policies to ensure the maintenance of biodiversity in the long term.

Traffic disrupted by fire report and broken-down car

IMG_7577Monaco firefighters were called out early on Wednesday evening after reports of a burning smell at the Hotel Métropole.

Traffic on avenue des Spelugues was held up for some time as several firefighters arrived on the scene. No fire was found.

The burning smell was traced to an over-heated electric meter. Meanwhile, at around the same time, the Integrated Centre for Mobility Management had to close the access barrier to the tunnel connecting Monaco to France because of a broken-down car inside the tunnel, causing considerable tailbacks for traffic heading from the Principality.

French court rules ‘no parking’ for owners

One of the highest courts in France, the Court of Cassation, has ruled that it is forbidden to park in front of your own garage.

A motorist whose vehicle was parked in front of the entrance to his garage had been reported to police for illegal parking. At first, the police agreed that there had been no offence committed. However, the hearing by the higher court for the “inconvenient parking” of a vehicle in front of the building concluded that an offence had taken place.

The latest interpretation of the law is likely to cause considerable inconvenience to motorists across France who’ve been using the space in front of their entrances as a suitable place to park their own cars on busy streets.
