Drugs suspected in bizarre traffic incident

policecarA bizarre traffic incident on boulevard Albert Ier ended up with a drugged driver hitting a police car at low speed.

The 27-year-old Frenchman went around the Place d’Armes roundabout in the wrong direction just before 2:30 pm in the afternoon Saturday before slowly zigzagging the wrong way down boulevard Albert Ier.

A police officer had to break a window of the light grey Volvo Open to come into direct contact with the driver, who was incoherent. Although he didn’t fail a blood-alcohol test, packs of drugs were found in the car, which appeared to be cannabis.

The driver was not “unfavourably known to the French and Monegasque police services”, a police source said.

The driver was taken to the Princess Grace Hospital for general examination and psychiatric tests. A court appearance is likely in the next few days.

FEDEM: Monaco’s green future is like no other

Philippe Ortelli
Philippe Ortelli

Monaco Business News in its summer edition concentrates on energy transition. Introducing the topic in FEDEM’s regular publication, Philippe Ortelli, President of the Monegaqgue Employers’ Federation, underlines the vital importance of making the transition to clean energy.

“When we zoom in on energy transition in the Principality, we all know that it is this type of responsibility that will have an impact on our descendants, and over several generations,” Mr Ortelli said.

He refers to the fact that Monaco is very small, but adds that the power to act is much more important than our surface occupied on earth.

“This generational responsibility commits us to develop the solutions that will ensure the sustainability of our economic, ecological and social model”, Mr Ortelli commented. “For it alone will provide us with the means to act elsewhere on earth.”

He added that not everything is lost in the battle, for example, that we can reduce our carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2030 if the will is there.

“Our model in Monaco is like no other. Let us continue together, the heads of companies, the authorities and social partners, to demonstrate the collective responsibility which has led our country to advance and its economy to prosper.”

AS Monaco has been hunting for talent, especially new strikers, as the likelihood of Kylian Mbappe leaving gets stronger by the day.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have been approached by Monaco over possible moves for Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa and Anthony Martial. Martial would be returning to Monaco where he was popular with supporters.

Despite making just 18 Premier League starts under José Mourinho last season, his two goals in United’s two opening league games may mean his present team won’t be too happy to see him go. Mourinho said last week that he has faith in him.

Monaco have lost a host of top talent talent that helped them secure the Ligue 1 title, with Tiemoue Bakayoko, Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva all leaving for the Premier League.
