Mayweather stuns in custom Philipp Plein before his victory over McGregor

mayweatherplein2Saturday night, in the boxing event of the year boxer, Floyd Mayweather defeated Conor McGregor in their record-breaking fight in Las Vegas.

Even though I’m not a fan of the sport and don’t follow it, I have to admit I have been riveted by this one, particularly the #Fashion Fight that’s been going. Just when I thought nothing could top McGregor’s €125,000 ensemble of a custom Gucci mink coat with the Italian house’s signature snake embroidered on the back, 70s inspired brocade Gucci pants and matching red turtleneck at the pre-fight press conference, Floyd Mayweather came out blazing with German designer Philipp Plein, a regular on the Monaco scene, by his side.

With his entourage in full Philipp Plein gear, Mayweather himself sported a custom Plein robe, a collaboration between him and the German designer. It seemed inevitable that the 40-year-old boxing champion and long-time client of Mr Plein would wear one of his designs on fight night after walking in his resort show in Cannes earlier this year.

“Floyd’s gear needs to be both functional and fashionable,” said Plein. “So within the guidelines of the sport I created pieces for the fight that represent my view, my lifestyle and my taste. ”

“Luxurious and unexpected materials like python and crocodile are used instead of the classic sport and technical fabrics,” he explained of zip split sleeve detailed jacket finished off with a gold-lined hood, black face mask and cap.

Photo: Philip Plein“Floyd’s classic black and gold colours are reinvented using embellishments in Swarovksi crystals,” referring to Mayweather’s TBE (The Best Ever) slogan across the back band of his shorts.

“I think it is important nowadays to develop a real relationship with the personalities who are associated with the brand, there is a real investment,” revealed Plein. “I also think that in this historic period of transparency through social media, the consumer can tell the difference between actions that are authentic and those that are just paid sponsorships.”

“Sport stars are the heroes of our times,” he added. “They are icons, and represent what a man can look up to and emulate in many ways, including style and fashion. This can only make men more and more conscious of their own style.”

Mayweather’s fight night robe is not the only thing that the pair has been working on. Currently available online and at Philipp Plein’s Vegas flagship, a capsule collection specially created to commemorate this 50th fight of Mayweather’s undefeated career features two t-shirts in gold and crystal emblazoned with the hashtag UNDEFEATED. The Philipp Plein/Floyd Mayweather collaboration will continue in 4 instalments over the next two years with future drops in the designer’s shops worldwide.

Game changers at Monaco Yacht Show

The organisers of the Monaco Yacht Show have revealed the 125 yachts that will be exhibited September 27-30.

Over the show’s three days, 42 newly launched vessels will make their debut at Port Hercules in front of owners, industry professionals and press. Brokerage houses will be showing off these latest vessels from some of the biggest shipyards in the world.

Superyacht Investor has decided that the top two super yachts to see at the show are the DAMEN Game Changer and the Home Heesen.

Technically, the DAMEN Game Changer is a 70-metre yacht support vessel featuring 250 square metres of open deck space and, of course, its own helicopter landing pad and hangar.

It is powered by four 3,000hp MTU 16V4000 M63L diesel engines, achieving a top speed of 20 knots and a cruising range of 4,500 nautical miles at 60 knots. There’s a large deck crane, making it easy to load a number of smaller tender vessels or submersibles.

Billed as “the world’s first fast displacement yacht”, the Home Heesen is a 49.8-metre motor yacht that has exceeded its contractual top speed of 16.3 knots in its diesel engine mode. It also features a hybrid propulsion mode, powered by two 127kW water-cooled motors, with a top speed of just over nine knots.

The vessel’s vertical bow, fixed swim platform and floor-to-ceiling glass windows present a unique profile. The architect is Frank Laupman, of Omega Architects, and the interior was designed by Cristiano Gatto.

Nice association opposes anti-immigrant C-Star

The C-Star ship, which has been involved in anti-migrant operations off Libya, may be coming to Nice. A number of citizens are already up in arms at the possibility.

The All Citizens association said; “We refuse to allow Nice to become the backbone of a racist and murderous enterprise.”

The C-Star vessel, carrying extreme-right Italian, French and German activists, has been sailing in the Mediterranean since July 7 when it lifted anchor from Djibouti. Under the slogan “Defend Europe”, the Generation of Identity group wants to push migrants’ boats back to Africa and prevent the work of NGOs that have been picking up migrants and taking them to safety in Europe.

C-Star has been in Malta, but plans to return to the sea. The ship could go to France, Croatia, Rome or Barcelona. Toulon has also been touted as a possible port of call.

All Citizens has appealed to the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, the captaincy of the port of Nice, the chamber of commerce and industry, which manages the port and the Nice-Côte d’Azur Metropolitan Area to prevent the C-star from calling at the port of Nice. A husband and wife team from Royston, near Cambridge in the UK, are to take part in a 42-car rally from Dover to Monte Carlo to raise money for two charities, the Royston Crow has reported.

The 2,000 km RDT Pavestone Rally will see some cars – none of which can cost more than £500 (€550) – cross 8 countries in 4 days from September 7 to 10.

Sam and Matt Hanks are taking part in the Pavestone Rally in a Batmobile-style Ford Kuga – which they bought for £500 – in aid of the British charities the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Rainy Day Trust.

Mr Hanks told the Crow: “I think virtually everyone I know has been affected by cancer in some way.

“The work the Teenage Cancer Trust does is hugely important, because it’s hard enough to understand what’s going on as an adult, but to go through that as a young person must be so tough.” He added, “The Rainy Day Trust supports people in the building trade and their families who fall on hard times so it is very important to us, in the line of work we do.”

There will be a host of whacky challenges to take part in en route and every day is fancy dress.

“I think if you’re going to take part in something like this, you can’t just drive, you have to fully embrace what the event is about so we will be having different fancy dress days, as Batman and Batwoman, the Joker and Harley Quinn and other comic book characters.

“I am nervous, not in the least regarding car arguments about navigation! But we’ve always wanted to take part in a rally and are really excited.”

The RDT Pavestone Rally starts in Dover, UK, spends the first night in Luxembourg then on to Belgium, France, Switzerland and North East Italy before finishing in Monte Carlo with and Awards Dinner in Nice.

Monaco’s Leclerc still on top of F2

Monaco Formula 2 driver Charles Leclerc had a disappointing outing at Spa-Francorchamps on Saturday, failing to make it into the top three after a technical non-conformity was found on his car.

In spite of this setback, Leclerc, whose impressive 2017 chart total counts five successes and seven pole positions in the F1 antechamber, retains a very large lead at the top of the provisional hierarchy.

The 19-year-old Monegasque has been called a genius by the motorsport press. A graduate of the Ferrari Driver Academy, Leclerc will be driving a F1 car next year at the wheel of a Sauber. Meanwhile, he has a 66 points margin compared to Oliver Rowland of the UK, who finished third this Saturday.

Champagne maker gives boost to artist

An upcoming pop-artist is facing legal action from luxury conglomerate LVMH, owners of the Dom Pérignon brand.

In recent years, Cedric, whose company is Cedric.Art, has gained acclaim for organising exhibitions in Monte Carlo,Belgium, St-Tropez, Paris, London and Marbella. With his major clientele based in Europe, he also sells his works to clients in the USA, the Middle-East and beyond.

On his website, Cedric says, “My style is Contemporary, playing with pointillism and pop-art. This implies that my goal is to make accessible art with a great fun factor – Making a masterpiece into an icon, that’s what fascinates me. Transforming marketing into art.”

The contemporary painter has come under attack by Champagne brand Dom Pérignon. The brand is convinced that his paintings and merchandising – one shirt and one sweater based on his art – could mislead the general public into thinking that Cedric’s items are funded or made on request by Dom Pérignon, Art Insider has reported.

In a bid to make his voice heard, Cedric has gone on to launch www.notdomperignon.com on which he has written his first impressions and the thought that this could be an oversight or mistake been made at the headquarters in Reims, France, Art Insider wrote.

Cedric further underscores his argument by stating: “Attacking an upcoming artist would be setting a strange precedent and sending the wrong message to the art community. This is a mistake that can be resolved.

“A quick reflection on people, companies or brands who are masters in the domain of marketing automatically throws up some famous names in the consumer goods sector.”

The artist added, “There is a clear reason why I only use a few brands in my artwork: these brands are iconic, best in their domain and set the pace for the rest of their industry.  In my opinion they epitomise artisanal craftsmanship and refined marketing.”
