Monaco’s Di Grassi crowned Formula E champion

At the inaugural Hydro-Québec Montreal ePrix on Sunday, July 30, Monaco resident Lucas Di Grassi claimed the Formula E world title after a “calamitous weekend” for defending champion Sebastien Buemi.

Speaking about the hilly 2.75-kilometre, 14-turn street circuit, Di Grassi, who won the inaugural electric race in Beijing in 2014, commented: “It’s probably one of the best tracks in Formula E history so I think everyone is pleased.”

The Abt Audi driver went into Sunday’s final with a six-point lead after taking 25 points for the win and another three for pole position. Renault’s Buemi picked up 12 for finishing fourth.

Having finished third in the first Formula E season and second last year, after being edged out by Buemi, the Brazilian – who turns 33 on August 11 – was in tears having finally reached the number one position of the podium.

The 2017-18 Formula E season, which kicks off on December 2 in Hong Kong, introduces a more compact schedule, including three double-headers and three new venues – Santiago, Sao Paulo and Rome.

This fourth edition of the world’s first fully-electric single-seater racing series comprises the most races to appear on the calendar since its inception in 2014.

Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Formula E, said: “It’s exciting news to welcome a number of new host cities on the Formula E calendar, as well as seeing existing locations build on the success of previous events.”

He added, “Formula E is continuing to expand the calendar and the number of cities in key markets, in addition to the growing list of partners and manufacturers joining the electric revolution. Our priority is to consolidate a calendar with long-term agreements with host cities – the schedule for Season 4 is a step in the right direction.”

Ulysse Nardin to launch exclusive timepiece at MYS

With the Monaco Yacht Show looming large, the Swiss luxury watch brand Ulysse Nardin has announced that it will launch a new addition to its “Monaco” range of marine timepieces at the world’s top superyacht show.

This year marks the watchmaker’s ninth year of sponsorship of MYS, and the limited edition timepiece range will be unveiled at the Upper Deck Lounge at the Monaco Yacht Club.

The new timepiece is limited to 100 watches, making it a very much sought-after item.

Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the MYS, said: “We’re proud that the Monaco Yacht Show has become a yearly rendezvous for Ulysse Nardin, which has integrated the show both as part of their history deeply anchored to the sea and as part of a global business and marketing strategy to reach their worldwide high-end clientele in Monaco.”

JCEM adds Monegasque to language offering

Monaco’s own junior chamber of commerce, the JCEM, has added the Monegasque language to French and English on its website.

“A Zuvena Camera Ecunomica de Mùnegu à vistu u giurnu ün 1963 e, despöi, è  prun stacàu â vita d’u Principatu,” the first line of the home page says, translated as “Since its launch in 1963, the Junior Chamber International Monaco has been at the heart of the economic fabric of the Principality of Monaco”.

The one-line introduction, in any language, could not be more apt. Through its work to develop the economic attractiveness of the Principality, the JCEM has enabled generations of young leaders and entrepreneurs to meet up in order to share their experiences, set up common projects and develop their business acumen.

The JCEM says its three main focuses are: entrepreneurship, training and networking. Since its inception 54 years ago, the JCEM as become an established proving ground for young entrepreneurs, of any nationality, and a launch pad for many successful businesses. It goes from strength to strength.

Its most prominent initiatives include the Business Plan Competition, the Economic Directory, the Startup Weekend, the Employer’s Guide, the Monaco Trade Survey, Get in the Ring, Graine d’Entrepreneur and the last to date, Business Time.

Marseille jobs boost from Portier project

The building of the sea extension at Portier is an exciting development for Monaco but also excellent news for Marseille, where work on the pontoons is about to start.

Bouygues Immobilier will build 18 reinforced concrete caissons, each 27 metres high and weighing 10,000 tons. A total of 700 jobs are being created calling on expertise in a number of roles. The company is actively searching for crane operators, metal-workers, and machine operators, and form-builders among a range of specialised skills. The total includes work for sub-contractors (see www.groupeactual.eu).

There will be considerable economic spin-off from the project, which will involve two years of construction in Marseille.

After being floated in a designated dock at the port, the caissons will be towed to Monaco in time for the start of the major construction work at Portier in 2020.

Sassy bandits bagged on return to scene of crime

Two thieves who stole a valuable handbag in Monaco on May 18 have been sent to jail. The scene of the crime was outside Sass Cafe, where the two Slovak nationals had been refused entry.

The Criminal Court in Monaco heard that the two men had been suspected of the theft – the handbag was valued at €20,000 – when they suddenly disappeared. On the following day they retuned to the scene and were recognised by staff who reported them to police.

Following their arrest the police searched their car, in which the two had been sleeping, but the handbag was not there. They denied the charge of theft. Video surveillance was said to be of poor quality. The two me were sent to jail for four months.

Harley Davidson Club plans full day of celebrations

The Harley Davidson Club of Monaco is celebrating its 25th anniversary in style. A special event on August 19 will take place on the North Darse of Port Hercules, under the High Patronage of Prince Albert.

Created under the good offices of the Automobile Club of Monaco, and under the presidency of Michel Ferry, now President of Honour, the Harley Davidson Club Monaco is the only one in the world to have obtained authorisation to bear the name of the iconic motorcycle brand. The Monaco Club was granted this unique distinction by Willie G Davidson, President of Harley Davidson and grandson of the founder of the brand.

The Harley Davidson Club of Monaco, sponsored by Princess Stephanie, brings together 80 Monegasque male and female members – residents, staff of the various administrative and governmental entities, liberal professions and students – who are passionate about the Harley Davidson world and owning a motorcycle.

This passion contributes to the participation of moments of sharing for the benefit of other associations such as the Telethon or Fight Aids Monaco.

As an integral part of local life, the association, which proudly displays the colours of the Principality, is also involved in the promotion of numerous events alongside AS Monaco, the Monte Carlo Group and the Monaco Town Hall.

The exceptional party on August 19 will start at 10 am, and there’ll be a series of concerts with local and well-known groups, booths selling products associated with Harley Davidson, several food and beverage outlets, and an exceptional security device allowing everyone to enjoy the festivities in peace and serenity.

Rockbox and Sofaï will provide musical entertainment for the evening, while Miss Dey & The Residents will offer a total immersion into Rockabilly world of the 1950s with a 100 percent female repertoire, from Janis Martin to Wanda Jackson, from Ella Mae Morse to Laura Lee Perkins, from Brenda Lee to Patsy Cline.
