Médiathèque de Monaco announces fall programme

The start of the school year has come for the Médiathèque de Monaco, which has unveiled its programming from September to December.

The institution, unavoidable in the Monegasque cultural landscape, is open to all and presents a service that promotes reading but also culture and leisure on a wider scale.

The Médiathèque welcomes you throughout the year at its two sites, the Louis Notari Library and the José Notari Sonotheque at 19 blvd Princesse Charlotte, with cultural events on the themes of literature, theatre, music, cinema and photography.

Nearly 450,000 documents: books, DVDs, CDs, French and foreign newspapers, magazines, photographs, correspondence, and musical scores are available.

For the fall, conferences on the theme of Cuba, Secrets of Communication, Women Artists in the presence of Nivèse Oscari at the Ecole de Nice, film screenings and live concerts, and several meetings organised as part of the operation “Prevert honoured” on the occasion of the 40 year anniversary of the death of the poet.

Photography will also be featured this autumn with two recurring themes presented by Adrien Rebaudo: photographic ballads during which photography and music will be put into perspective around a predefined theme; and the distractions photographiques which present themselves as a playful session while being put into practice.

Cemetery Chapel to close temporarily

As part of the Government’s continuing programme of making more facilities accessible to those with reduced mobility, work is due to be carried out on the Chapel at the Cemetery, the Town Hall has announced.

The work is due to start on Monday, September 11, and will continue until Saturday, October 14, inclusive. The work will necessitate the closure of the Chapel during this period.

On Friday, September 1, more than a thousand Monegasques of all generations gathered around the Princely Couple for the traditional “Cavagnëtu”, the Monegasque picnic, at Parc Princesse Antoinette.

Shortly after 6 pm, the Sovereign Prince and Princess Charlene, holding in their arms Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, and accompanied by Baroness Elisabeth-Ann de Massy, were welcomed by Mayor Georges Marsan and many members of the Communal Council.

After the traditional delivery of bouquets and reception by the dancers of the Palladian, a Mass was celebrated in the open air by Archbishop Bernard Barsi and Canon César Penzo and accompanied by the choir of U Cantin A Roca.

An aperitif was served around the socca ovens and the stands of local culinary specialties, including pies, pissaladière, and Monégasque fougasse. The picnic continued until late in the evening under the olive trees of the.

Guests were also able to enjoy the bars, barbecues, ice creams and other delicacies offered by the Town Hall in order to fill the “cavagnëtu” picnic basket that some had brought for the occasion.

Double taxation treaty with Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein has approved a double taxation agreement with Monaco centering on income tax and capital gains tax. The main provisions eliminate double taxation. Liechtenstein and Monaco had already concluded a tax information exchange agreement.

Liechtenstein said the agreement with Monaco is part of its programme of eliminating double taxation both within the European Union and worldwide. The double taxation agreement with Monaco will come into force after both countries have completed the respective legislative procedures.

Liechtenstein is the fourth-smallest country in Europe and lies in the heart of the Alps between Switzerland and Austria. It is the sixth-smallest country in the world with a population of around 37,000. The country has been a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) since 1995.

Since the conclusion of the Customs Treaty in 1923, Liechtenstein has shared a common customs area with Switzerland, meaning that bilateral free trade agreements between Switzerland and other countries also apply to Liechtenstein.

Warm welcome for nursing students in Monaco

The first year students of the Institute of Nursing Training (IFSI) started their studies this Wednesday in the presence of Didier Gamerdinger, Minister of Health and Social Affairs, Patrick Bini, Director of the Hospital Princess Grace, and Monique Le Du, Director of IFSI.

At the end of the welcome speech given by the Director of IFSI, the Minister warmly congratulated the students on being among the winners of the competition that this year saw 9,060 candidates in the PACA region for 2,963 places, 30 at the CHPG IFSI.

Among the 30 admitted are a student of Monegasque nationality and two other residents of the Principality.

Didier Gamerdinger emphasised the priority given to IFSI training by the Prince’s Government. He also stressed the importance of technical skills but above all of the altruistic attitude required for the profession of nurse.

Additionally, he expressed his wish to see the students flourish as nurses and caregivers who work daily to serve others.

Monaco’s art and culture highlighted in Astana

The Department of Tourism and Conventions, in collaboration with Monaco Inter Expo (MIE), organised a series of three concerts in the Monaco Pavilion at the Astana World Expo during the last week of August in order to showcase the Principality as a tourist destination.

Olivier Innocenti, composer-performer and first prize winner of the Academy Rainier III, gave a performance with his Classical Accordion.

The native of Monaco also took part in two other concerts in the main building of Astana 2017.

In parallel, some forty international guests attended a presentation of the cultural life of the Principality.
