Monaco resident in spotlight over soccer club

Dmitry Rybolovlev is not the only Monaco resident to own a sizeable stake in a football club.

Farhad Moshiri, an Iranian-British businessman and investor who is a resident in Monaco, sold his stake in UK club Arsenal last year to buy nearly fifty percent of Everton, the Merseyside club.

But the recently released Paradise Papers suggest his original Arsenal stake was funded by a gift from Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov raising the question of whether the oligarch’s money is now in Everton, according to UK press reports.

Mr Moshiri has claimed he is wealthy in his own right through investments in energy companies and steel.

A person who owns a stake of ten percent or more in one club cannot hold a single share in another, to avoid any conflict of interest, according to Premier League rules. The situation has been muddied by the fact that Mr Usmanov has directly funded a training ground for Everton while retaining his Arsenal stake.

The leaked papers suggest that Mr Usmanov and Mr Moshiri, the oligarch’s former accountant, bought a 14.58 percent stake in Arsenal together in 2007 through an offshore company called Red and White Holdings. The documents show that all the funds for the purchase of the Arsenal shares came from a firm called Epion Holdings, a company wholly-owned by Mr Usmanov.

Mr Moshiri strenuously denied the money was a gift. His lawyers in the Everton deal said any allegation Premier League rules had been violated were wholly false. They say Mr Moshiri is independently wealthy and funded the football investments himself.

The Monaco Town Council is once again inviting Monegasques and residents to decorate their facades, windows and balconies for National Day on November 19.

As part of this year’s celebrations, two shows for young and old will both be held at the Espace Léo Ferré, by invitation, as well as a fireworks show at the Port of Monaco.

The festivities will begin at 3 pm on Wednesday, November 15, with “Childishness 3”, a concert for children from five years old by Aldebert.

Then on Saturday, November 18, at 8 pm, fireworks at Port Hercules will be followed by a 90-minute show by illusionist Allan Dickens at 9 pm. Levitation, divination, disappearances, a flying ball and other surprises will be repeated again on Sunday, November 19 at 3 pm.

Invitations for these shows, based on availability, can be obtained from the Town Hall (Salle de Mariages), on presentation of an identity card or a resident’s card, from 9 am to 4 pm on

Wednesday, November 8 (Monegasques only) and Thursday, November 9 (for Monegasques and Monaco residents).

During these events, Espace Léo Ferré will give tickets to spectators offering free parking at the Fontvieille and Papalins Shopping Centre. A free bus service will also be set up Saturday, November 18, at the end of the show from the stop at the Centre Commercial in Fontvieille. The shuttle will serve various stops in the Principality according to requests.

A reminder that with National Day falling this year on a Sunday, Monday, November 20, will be a public holiday.

Paradise Papers provoke France’s politicians

eurosFrance’s politicians have sought to take advantage of the latest international tax scandal – the release of the so-called Paradise Papers after the publication of a report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

Marine le Pen of the Front National has focused her attack on the international corporations that have avoided paying tax. She has suggested “creating a tax on the activities carried out in France by the big groups … and reinforcing international tax cooperation”.

At a press conference in the National Assembly on Monday, socialist firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon and deputies of his grouping France Insoumis said that all their amendments against tax fraud had been rejected in July. Among them: the removal of the “Bercy lock”, a measure that requires the judicial authorities to await the approval of the Ministry of Finance to investigate when there is a suspicion of tax fraud.

The Socialists have claimed that great progress was made while Francois Hollande was president, while les Republicans have so far said nothing at all.

Meanwhile, President Macron is reported to be more concerned about the push for independence in neighbouring Catalonia.

#MyMonacoStyle Weekend Report

weekendreport

Hey guys welcome back to reality, aka the week! Oh yes, sorry to herald its return. Weekend or week I’m just ready for it to get properly chilly so I can finally try out all the layering looks that have been piling up in my mental lookbook, but alas it’s still light sweater weather so I’ll have to deal.

With that being said, there are still ways to start to layer in a way that allows for minor temperature fluctuations without having you sweating or freezing. A heavy blazer, a fur gilet, something to add to your wardrobe for this transition period. This weekend some style mavens embraced the season’s change and others dug back in their summer wardrobes to soak up the sun. These are my 5 picks who are currently #WINNING with their street style savvy looks.

tommclaren

Tom Claeren

@tomclaeren First off, we have man around town and luxury fashion influencer Tom Claeren channelling James Bond/Men In Black. He may blend into the monochromatic background on board a Silver Yacht but his style always stands out. A simple black suit with the shirt unbuttoned just enough and showing the right amount of skin for a dashing flair, dark round sunglasses from Opticien Créateur, and Louis Vuitton Damier luggage makes us all rethink our travel looks. However, we are not all Tom Claeren departing a superyacht via helicopter … actually I retract that statement … this is Monaco. Anyways the stakes are raised. Thanks Tom for putting dudes all over the Principality to shame for their sweatpants in public (I don’t care if they’re Loro Piana).

laurena

Lauren A

@the.la.way Fashion blogger Lauren was clearly happy to be in warmer weather again as she returned back to Monaco, posing with a blinding highlight in a pale pink 10 dress and coordinating Gucci clutch. If only looking so glam casually hanging in the park was so easy. Throw a coin in that fountain if you want but looking this flawless is probably just wishful thinking.

Hanadi Merchant

Hanadi Merchant-Habib

@desihighstyle Fashion journalist Hanadi Merchant-Habib finally got to break in her new blue velvet with grosgrain trim Gucci blazer and boy was she excited about it. Standing out in a sea of dad jeans and ugly sweaters, Hanadi showed the stylistically challenged the correct way to transition to fierce fall dressing. Her outfit was popping and so were the colours. A cerulean Gucci Dionysus bag and hot pink Gucci shoes added to the colour block dynamic of her ensemble (oh, and Gucci is always a good idea). To keep it casual, she added a white camisole and denim mini-skirt that works perfect for the daylight hours. A pair of Dior So Real sunglasses give her an air of anonymity to the gawking masses on their way no doubt to comb Zara for a velvet blazer after spotting her.

Helene de Cicco

Helene de Cicco

@helenedecicco You guys, if I could go back to my school days this is what I would wear … instead of baggy Polo sweaters and LL Bean backpacks. Helene’s look is everything in the fact that it’s simple with just the right trendy touches, the streetwear and luxury mix. First of all the Supreme t-shirt … if you don’t currently have one in your outfits rotation are you even into fashion? The black pants and white Stan Smith sneakers keep it uniform and crisp and OMG the Louis Vuitton briefcase has her serving EXECUTIVE REALNESS and you’re all FIRED! If an exact copy of this look pops up on my Instagram feed it’s just merely coincidence.

Coralie

Coralie

@coraliergt This brunette beauty is literally a tutorial for fall 2017 dressing. Let me breakdown her outfit from the feet up. Must-have shoes for the last billion seasons the Gucci Princetown fur slip-on loafers, casually frayed jeans with a not so casual price tag, a black leather jacket (they never go out of stye), a white fur gilet, and a classic blue Balenciaga motorcycle bag. She looks comfortable, it looks lux but not over the top and still very accessible. The perfect look for grabbing a pumpkin spice latté with your girlfriends at Starbucks or a walk around the port with your favourite four-legged friend. Coralie is autumnal #GOALS.
