MonacoTech, the Incubator and Accelerator startup program created by the Monaco State in partnership with Monaco Telecom was inaugurated by Prince Albert, Minister of Finance and Economy Jean Castellini and Xavier Niel, owner of Monaco Telecom, on Wednesday afternoon.

With more than 800 square metres of open space, including a co-working space, two fab labs and a ping-pong room, MonacoTech has already welcomed 15 startups over the last few days, from various countries including Singapore and Canada.

MonacoTech is the only organisation of its kind in the Principality. Its main objective is to support the creation and launch of innovative projects through a dynamic ecosystem and a network of business angels, venture capital, banks, and so on.

Jean Castellini, in the presence also of Minister Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister for Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, and Minister of State Serge Telle, pointed out: “This initiative of the Government is part of the necessary evolution to transform the economy of the Principality over the years to come.”

The Minister of Economy added, “The baby has been born and will grow quickly. We wish her a long happy life.”

There was also acknowledgement from Minister Castellini and Xavier Niel of the efforts and “brilliance” of MonacoTech Director Fabrice Marquet, a Monegasque who launched two businesses of his own during his years living abroad.

The first selection jury had selected five startups out of 67 submitted files (CIEL, Hyve, KeeSystem, TerraioT, YouStock) and the second jury 10 of the 115 files submitted (Novetech Surgery, Lanveva Boats, Phyg, Surgisafe, Coraliotech, Gangz, Nanotek Materials, Linkyourleasure, Teale, Yachtneeds).

A one-day rail strike in Italy on Friday, November 10, will mean that no trains will operate across the border from Ventimiglia. Most TER trains that usually start their journey from Italy through Monaco will now start from Menton, French train operator SNCF has warned.

During the day, four trains running from Menton will also be cancelled, while only two services running in the opposite direction will be cancelled, neither of them during peak commuting times. Disruption to service will start at about 9 pm on Thursday, November 9, and continue until the same time on Friday evening.

It is traditional for Italy’s one-day rail strikes to take place on Fridays. The latest 24-hour stoppage is expected to have a serious impact on the daily commute to the Principality for Italian employees.

The Principality of Monaco is once again supporting International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25.

The general public will be able to attend a free talk by Dr Marie-France Hirigoyen, a psychiatrist specialised in psychological violence and author of many books on the subject, including “Stalking the Soul: Emotional Abuse and the Erosion of Identity.” The topic of her discourse in Monaco will be: “Violence in couples: Why don’t women leave?”

The event is planned for Thursday, November 23, at 6pm, at the Auditorium of the Lycée Technique et Hôtelier de Monaco in the Condamine.

From November 25 through 10 December (Human Rights Day), the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence aim to raise public awareness and mobilising people everywhere to bring about change.

As part of this initiative, the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign invites you to “Orange the World,” using the colour designated by the UNiTE campaign to symbolise a brighter future without violence. Support the campaign by adding the hashtag #orangetheworld on social media.

A reminder that there is a free and anonymous helpline on Mondays from 9 am to noon – 116 919 – for victims of violence, as well as additional assistance available in Monaco.

Principality providing direct help to child victims

For the seventh consecutive year, the festival “Le Temps Presse” – roughly translated into English as “Hurry up!” – has been held in Monaco and Menton. On Thursday, November 9, and supported by the Government of Monaco, the Théâtre des Variétés in Monaco and the Middle East Mediterranean campus of Sciences Po Paris in Menton, welcomed several hundred children from the Principality and the Sciences Po Paris campus.

The festival is part of a committed approach, for citizens’ cinema, presenting short films from around the world in connection with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Each year, several prizes are awarded by a student jury: among them, the Climate Prize, the Women’s Prize, the Student Prize and the Children’s Prize.

In the early afternoon, at the Théâtre des Variétés, in the presence of Marc Oberon, Festival Director and Founder, the 240 students of the schools of St Charles, Fontvieille and Révoires, and three classes of Collège Charles III, voted for their favourite film among the five short films in competition for the Children’s Prize.

Their votes will be added to those of the other children who are members of the jury and who are enrolled in countries in which the Monegasque Cooperation is active, including Burkina Faso, Burundi, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali and Morocco.

In the evening, 120 first-year students from the Sciences Po Paris campus in Menton watched the five preselected films for the Students’ Prize and chose their winner together. As part of a partnership agreement signed in 2014, and renewed at the beginning of this academic year, the International Cooperation Department and the Campus are collaborating to raise students’ awareness of development issues and the fight against poverty in the world.

The awards ceremony of the festival “Le Temps Presse” will be held on January 4, 2018, at the Paris City Hall, in the presence of many committed personalities.
