The winter sales started in the Principality on the first opening day of the year, Tuesday, January 2, a full eight days ahead of the annual sales along the Côte d’Azur.

The sales will last until February 15, when local shops will have made room for their spring and summer collections. Brisk business was reported during the day in the Metropole Shopping Centre, in Fontvieille and along rue Grimaldi.

The winter sales start in Italy on January 5, giving Monaco’s shops a head start over both its neighbours.

Edmond de Rothschild Monaco acquired a new position in PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:QQQ) during the third quarter, according to its most recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SECà.

The institutional investor acquired 5,070 shares of the company’s stock, valued at approximately €500,000 ($602,000). PowerShares QQQ Trust, Series 1 accounts for about 0.5 percent of Edmond de Rothschild Monaco’s investment portfolio, making the stock its 19th largest position, according to Bangalore Weekly.

Edmond de Rothschild Monaco describes itself as a “bold investment house,” and as independent and family-controlled.

PowerShares QQQ, formerly known as “QQQ” or the “NASDAQ-100 Index Tracking Stock”, is an exchange-traded fund based on the Nasdaq-100 Index. The Fund will, under most circumstances, consist of all of stocks in the Index. The Index includes 100 of the largest domestic and international nonfinancial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market based on market capitalisation, according to Investco Ltd.

Britain’s Prince Harry and his fiancée, American actress Meghan Markle, arrived in Monaco on New Year’s Eve and stayed for two nights. The couple landed in Nice aboard the 9:55 am scheduled British Airways flight from London.

The newly-engaged couple, due to marry May 19 at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, boarded the aircraft some time ahead of other passengers. According to fellow travellers, they were travelling with three bodyguards and the last three rows of seats, next to the toilets, were reserved for the royal party.

Prince Harry was met in Nice by French security officers before taking a helicopter shuttle to the Principality where they were met “by friends”. There has been speculation in the British press that the 33-year-old prince and Suits actress may have met up with Monaco’s most senior princely couple during their stay.

Princess Charlene met the fifth in line for the British throne last year, when Prince Harry accompanied her to the England vs South Africa rugby match in Twickenham.

The details of Harry and Meghan’s short visit remain a closely guarded secret, and the couple left the Riviera before lunchtime on Tuesday, January 2.

Monaco-based GasLog Ltd has ordered a new build 180,000 cubic metre vessel with XDF propulsion, scheduled to deliver in the third quarter of 2019, from Samsung Heavy Industries.

This vessel is currently unchartered but is expected to deliver into a strong Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shipping market, the company said on Tuesday, January 2.

CEO Paul Wogan said: “I am very pleased to announce this expansion in our fleet. We have secured this vessel at a very attractive cost and she will be equipped with the latest propulsion and cargo containment technology which will result in highly competitive unit freight costs.

“The vessel is expected to deliver into a strong LNG shipping market which, according to our estimates, will be short of capacity by the winter of 2019/2020.”

GasLog’s fully-owned fleet includes 15 LNG carriers, including 10 ships in operation and five LNG carriers on order, and GasLog Partners LP, a master limited partnership formed by GasLog, owns a further twelve LNG carriers. GasLog’s principal executive offices are in Monaco at Gildo Pastor Center, 7 Rue du Gabian.
