Counterfeit gamblers sentenced in Monaco

In a case going back almost three years, four Bulgarian nationals have been sentenced for passing a number of fake 500-euro notes at Monte-Carlo casino, French-language daily Monaco Matin reports.

The defendants were arrested at the Monaco Monte-Carlo train station in March, 2016, and two of the four have been locked up awaiting trial since that date.

The youngest of the accused was acquitted, while the remaining three were sentenced to one, two and three years in prison. The court heard that the Monaco authorities had received a tip-off from the Italian financial police on March 9, 2016. The Bulgarians were suspected of using fake 500-euro bills to bet at San Remo’s casino before moving on to Monaco.

Monaco’s Beefbar opens in Dubai

Beefbar Dubai opened on Monday, February 5, the sixth outlet for the chain, which also has eateries in Hong Kong, Mexico and Monaco, where it all started out.

The restaurant is housed in the space that formerly held Greg Malouf’s Cle in Al Fattan Currency House in DIFC. It promises “fresh and delicious cuts of meat” in a “fashionable, sophisticated venue,” according to Time Out Dubai.

There’s a raw bar with beef tartare and Black Angus carpaccio, Kobe burgers, Argentinian steaks and Dutch veal, and a butcher’s shop so the fine cuts can be cooked at home.

Beefbar was set up by Riccardo Giraudi, thanks to, unsurprisingly, his love of meat. It’s billed as “unpretentious food” for “discerning carnivores”. The restaurant itself will be operated under the auspices of Flavio Briatore, who said: “I am delighted to open one of the most sought-after restaurants in one of the most incredible cities in the world. Dubai is bursting with great restaurants and Beefbar will be a great addition to the region,” he said.

EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour saw French team Beijaflor win two of the three races at Sunday’s stadium racing. The young crew continued their winning ways in the first of five coastal stretches.

These long coastal courses along Oman’s coastline are part of a reworking for EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour, which also includes exchanging 30ft yachts for superfast Diam 24 multihulls and introducing short, intense stadium racing close to the shore.

Reigning EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour champions EFG Bank Monaco and British-Omani-flagged Team Averda were among the crews in hot pursuit of the French as the fleet hit speeds of more than 20 knots.

Beijaflore managed to hold onto the lead until the finish line – and their victory puts them firmly at the top of the leaderboard, according to the Times of Oman.

Omani sailing star Ali Al Balushi said his EFG Bank Monaco team found their speed in the Salalah Coastal Raid after a slow start in the stadium racing, finishing the coastal race in second just ahead of Averda.

“This result is a good improvement for us, and it shows we are definitely a fast boat,” he said. “We’re going to fight hard for first place until the end of the regatta.”
