Yacht Club’s Malizia first home in Bermuda-Hamburg race
The Monaco Yacht Club’s Malizia – has won the prestigious Bermuda Hamburg Race, the final leg of the Atlantic Anniversary Regatta, www.sailingscuttlebutt.com reported.
It was the last chapter of an epic 3,500nm 10-day transatlantic rivalry between Jens Kellinghusen’s Varuna VI, and Boris Herrmann’s Malizia, with the two boats sailing almost bow-to-bow for much of the time. In the end, Malizia was the fastest boat on the water and first after elapsed time, but Varuna succeeded over Malizia in IRC Zero after corrected time.
About 200 nautical miles away from the ultimate destination, Malizia was finally able to gain distance from Varuna and reached the German finish line at around 03:54 followed by Varuna at about 04:48 on July 18.
“We were side to side with Varuna since Land’s End. Fighting with all we have…,” said Herrmann.
It was a high-end battle of two state-of-the-art racing yachts and two German skippers from the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV): Jens Kellinghusen’s sleek, all-black Canting Keel Ker 56 Varuna VI versus Boris Herrmann’s futuristic, semi-foiling IMOCA 60 Malizia of Monaco Yacht Club.
For Malizia, every offshore race serves as a preparation for the successful completion of the 2020-2021 Vendeé Globe and potentially a future Volvo Ocean Race campaign, which will be raced on the same IMOCA 60 type. Being one of the top offshore racers in the world, Herrmann took the chance to deliver his yacht solo from Europe to Bermuda for the race start, and thereby qualified for the Route du Rhum.
Herrmann said he was also looking forward to being in Hamburg: “We are sailing to our hometown in Germany, which is an exclusive regatta destination for this ship, as I am usually somewhere abroad. I am therefore delighted to spend the next three weeks around Hamburg and be able to show Malizia to local friends and family.”
The Atlantic Anniversary Regatta (AAR) is part of the grand celebrations for the 150th anniversary for the Norddeutsher Regatta Verein (NRV) in Hamburg, Germany. Starting July 8, the 3500nm Bermuda to Hamburg Race is the final offshore race of the regatta series for the AAR, following on from the 2900nm RORC Transatlantic Race from Lanzarote to Grenada. The AAR is the first ever offshore series crossing the Atlantic Ocean in both directions.

About sixty of the yachts exhibited are less than two years old,” explains Gaëlle Tallarida, General Manager of the Show, before stressing that “We work in coordination with participating yacht brokers and shipyards in the interest, first and foremost, of the individual visitor, whether owner or future owner and to help new clients discover the world of luxury offered only by the superyacht industry. The MYS has a duty to offer these visitors the best possible experience, with the supreme quality of the yachts on display as one of the leading criteria.”
Set in September in the iconic Port Hercules, the MYS represents the pinnacle of the superyacht lifestyle against the glamorous backdrop of Monaco since 1991. On Thursday, July 19, 2018, Mr. Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Infrastructure, Environment and Urban Planning, visited the ship ‘Song of the Whale,’ one of the main means by which the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative is carried out.
The event was organised by the Permanent Secretariat of ACCOBAMS, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the International Fund for the Protection of Animals (IFAW), during the stopover of the ship in Monaco, headquarters of ACCOBAMS.
First results have shown the distribution of ocean mammals -whales and dolphins – which were then presented at a conference held at the Yacht Club. Participants were also able to read the scientific protocol of the regional census, listen to the recordings of the sounds emitted by the cetaceans during the study and listen to the testimony of scientific observers present on the boat.
The ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative is an innovative and unprecedented project aimed at improving conservation measures in the Mediterranean in order to safeguard its biodiversity.
The Permanent Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the adjacent Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS) is currently carrying out the first survey of cetaceans and megafauna, using eight aircraft, five boats, including the Song of the Whale, and a hundred scientific observers from all over the Mediterranean basin.
