Monaco set to become centre of excellence for modern art auctions

Auction

The success of a recent auction of modern art and jewellery in Monaco has strengthened the Principality’s image as a centre of excellence in the art world.

The Monte-Carlo Auction House – l’Hotel des ventes de Monte-Carlo – had published an extensive catalogue in advance of the sale, held at the Monaco Yacht Club on Sunday, July 22, accommodating a total of 400 lots. The auction’s success was attributed in part to its eclectic nature. At the lower end of the price scale were Hermes scarves selling at 100 euros, while at the pricier end a dancing couple by the Monegasque sculptor Bolero fetched 1.4 million euros.

Co-founder of HVMC Franck Baille told local French daily Monaco Matin that he was very encouraged by the sale. He said he would like to see Monaco develop as a centre for sales of modern art. One impediment is the law that requires a payment to the artist or his descendants of a portion of the sale price – the ‘droit de suite’. While this is limited to a maximum of 12,500 euros in France, there is currently no ceiling in place in Monaco and the payment is based on three percent of the selling price.

However, according to Franck Baille, Monaco’s Government is considering reforming the rules, a move that would give Monaco a boost in the world of modern art sales.

Peace and Sport moves up a gear with regional forum

Peace and Sport 2018

The Peace and Sport Regional Forum entitled “Societies in Motion: Rising up through Sport”, co-organized by Peace and Sport and the Region of the South Aegean, will take place on the historic island of Rhodes on October 18, 2018. To mark this unique occasion, 350 major decision-makers from across the Mediterranean region will identify regional challenges and build synergies to maximise the use of sport for positive change.

Following the success of the 10th Peace and Sport International Forum in 2017, Peace and Sport decided to organise a biennial regional forum to highlight local peace-through-sport initiatives and promote long-term partnerships. Every two years, this new format will bring together regional Head of States, Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, sports governing bodies, high-level athletes, international organisations, NGOs and academics.

Peace and Sport’s President and Founder, Joël Bouzou said: “Currently there are a great number of peace-through-sport initiatives and some remarkable actions taking place in the Mediterranean region. As a result, we are delighted to work together with the Region of the South Aegean to gather key leaders to discuss how to tackle social challenges through sport”.

Peace and Sport 2018

In the symbolic venue of Greece – the cradle of the Olympics and a pivotal crossroads between three continents, the Peace and Sport Regional Forum will focus on success factors in the use of sport as platform to create inclusive communities, networks and regional cooperation. The main topic on the agenda will be ‘cities as a hub of innovation and social inclusion through sport’. A decision-making Roundtable with a panel of regional policy-makers will help to advance domestic and international development and peace objectives utilising sport.

A vibrant networking area will facilitate new synergies and partnerships between local stakeholders. Furthermore, Peace and Sport will present awards to three international and four regional organisations and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to peace, dialogue and social change in the world through sport.

Peace and Sport is an international, neutral and independent organisation based in Monaco that contributes to peace using the power of sport. Founded in 2007 by Modern Pentathlon Olympic Medallist and World Champion Joël Bouzou, Peace and Sport operates under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. The organisation can count on a group of over 100 high level sportsmen personally committed to the peace through sport movement, the “Champions for Peace”. They dedicate their time, their fame, and their athletic experience to serve projects which use sport to tackle social issues.

New hot weather warning with night-time temps at 25 degrees

Hot sun

On Tuesday, July 24, the Monaco Government issued a new warning about the challenges of extremely hot weather, as the thermometer is expected to rise above 30 degrees by day and 25 at night over the next few days, with no sign of the heatwave ending until well into August.

According to age, the body does not react in the same way to high temperatures. Older people sweat less and the body has difficulty staying at an ambient 37. In the event that body temperature rises above 40 degrees, there is a risk of heat stroke and loss of consciousness.

For children and younger adults, the body sweats a lot to maintain the right temperature. But as a result we lose water and we risk dehydration if we don’t drink water, even when we don’t feel thirsty.

The warning advises residents to avoid going out during the hottest hours, from 11:00 until 17:00. A siesta is advised, as well as the avoidance of outdoor activities requiring lots of energy. Other recommendations include wearing a hat, light clothing (cotton), loose and light in colour, keeping accommodation cool (close windows and shutters/blinds during the day and opening them in the evening and at night if it is cooler.

In case of emergency call the Fire Brigade by dialling 112.

Sculptures of “Burnt Trees” by Philippe Pastor honoured for 2018 summer season

Sculptures of "Burnt Trees" by Philippe Pastor

As the summer season opens, the artist Philippe Pastor has reminded us of the fragility of our environment, especially the risk of forest fires that regularly ravage the PACA region.
Following the black sculptures of “Burnt Trees”, installed in the summer of 2017, Philippe Pastor is currently presenting a new coloured version at Château des Marres made up of red and yellow enamelled plates. Positioned at the edge of one of the busiest roads of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the monumental sculptures call to the public for constant vigilance against forest fires.

At the same time, in Monaco, the Jonckheere gallery unveils the latest bronze version of “Burnt Trees”. The sculpture is presented alongside paintings of the series “Blue Monochrome” devoted to the theme of the sea and the environmental issues that affect it. These works are part of the exhibition “Modernity & Primitivism”, in collaboration with the Parisian gallery Lucas Ratton.

Initiated in 2003, the “Burnt Trees” project has become a symbol of the fight against deforestation. Sculpture installations have been exhibited throughout the world, including New York, Singapore and the United Nations headquarters in Nairobi.

Pastor reaffirms his commitment to nature through his participation in Plant for the Planet, the Billion Tree Campaign, launched in 2007 by the United Nations Development Programme. In 2015, the sculptures are part of the Monaco Pavilion of the Universal Exhibition in Milan whose theme “Feed the Planet, Energy for Life” focussed on environmental issues sensitive to the artist.
