Visitor numbers climb faster than receipts

Tourists on a beach

The number of tourists visiting Monaco so far this summer has increased, according to local businesses, local French daily Monaco Matin reports.

However, anecdotal evidence is that more people are coming to Monaco on short trips, and the revenues from tourism reflect the fact that hotel occupancy in the Principality has not kept pace, at least for the month of July, local sources say.

Monaco from the air

The new attractions at the Oceanographic Museum have proven very popular, and the summer exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum has been particularly successful. The fact that children under 18 are admitted free has been a big draw for families. Those with a local railway ticket also receive a discount, so that entry costs only nine euros. This has drawn in many visitors who may be spending their holidays elsewhere along the coast. The Golden Treasures of the Pharaohs continues until September 9.

Official figures for tourism for 2018 will not be published by the Monaco Statistical Office until much later.

Fort Antoine offers Shakespearean tale for the present

Fort Antoine

On August 7 William Shakespeare’s “Timon of Athens” will close the 48th summer season at the Fort Antoine open-air theatre. The very rich Timon spends his wealth in order to improve the lives of others.

He finds himself ruined and in exile, then expresses his rage and his hatred of humanity before one day falling on a gold mine. Shakespeare was inspired by the Greek playwright Lucien for his work.

The company TAC Theater used the method of the Russian director Anatoly Vassiliev to approach the text of the English playwright in a very modern way.

The piece whose subject is very contemporary, the theatre’s director says. “Politically, we are in this spirit of believing in many things and in fact, we realise that it is everyone for himself, so we can have these moments of revenge, like Timon.”

“Through a play, we ask ourselves questions, it jostles us, moves us, it is also the search for an emotion.”

A few places are still available. Just go to the theatre at 21:00 on performance nights.
