A false Facebook page has been set up in the name of Monaco Mayor Georges Marsan, the local French-language Monaco Matin reports. The Mayor has filed a complaint with the Police in the Principality and has explained that he does not have a Facebook page.

Ten days ago, a number of people working at the town hall noticed that the Mayor’s identity had been usurped with the setting up of a page on Facebook purporting to be his. Several people outside the municipal offices also warned him, Georges Marsan said.

“People need to know that the Mayor of Monaco does not have a personal Facebook page, but only the official page of the Town Hall,” the Mayor told the daily.

Mr Marsan’s attempts to reach Facebook directly to ask that the fraudulent page be deleted were unsuccessful. The Town Hall has posted a message on its real Facebook page pointing out that the Mayor does not have a Facebook presence and asking users to pass on any information they may have relating to the matter.

Hands-on celebration of World First Aid Day

First aid

The Monegasque Red Cross has decided to celebrate World First Aid Day by holding an open-door day on September 8, at the Chapiteau de Fontvieille from 10:00 to 18:00.

The initiative has been undertaken in collaboration with the Prince’s Government, the Princess Grace Hospital, the Road Safety Association, and a number of private organisations, under the slogan: “You do not need a licence to save lives!”

The Prince’s Government wanted to encourage and facilitate the organisation of the event, which is fully in line with its policy of responding to natural, technological and societal crises.

The day is intended to raise awareness and familiarise visitors, young and old, with first aid with the theme “First aid and road safety”.

There will be many demonstrations, including the rescue of victims trapped in a vehicle. Among those taking part will be the Firefighters of Monaco, the Carabiniers du Prince, the Monaco Police, the Department of National Education, Youth and Sports, and the Princess Grace Hospital. Entrance is free.

Conference planned to stem rise in road haulage

The President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis announced on Tuesday that he is organising an inter-regional conference on the issues raised by the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, the catastrophic event that took 43 lives on August 14.

Christian Estrosi is calling on France, Italy and Europe as a whole to rethink the way in which the international transport of goods is conducted. In particular, he is in favour of the introduction of a European eco-tax to provide an incentive for rail transport.

The international conference will be held in Nice on October 4, with major French and Italian public authorities, businesses and transport firms invited.

Mr Estrosi said he wants to seize this opportunity to help stem the increase in the activities of international carriers, many of which are neither French nor Italian.

The so-called ‘halo’, a new safety device designed to protect the driver’s head, was seriously damaged in the collision. The device has not been popular with drivers, but it would appear that in this instance it may have saved the F1 rookie from serious injury or worse.

Charles Leclerc said on his Twitter account: “I have never been a fan of the halo, but I must say that I was very happy to have it above my head today.”

Paris celebrates continued tourist boom

Tourism in the French capital has broken records during the first half of 2018, according to the Regional Committee for Tourism (CRT) Paris Ile-de-France. Foreign visitors were credited for the numbers, despite the fact that the growth in the number of visitors from China and Japan is slowing somewhat.

A total of 17.1 million hotel arrivals were recorded in the first six months of the year, an increase of 4.1 percent year-on-year, “despite strikes in rail transport that affected mainly French customers and, to a lesser extent, some local European customers,” the CRT said. The year 2017 had already shown a sharp increase in visitors.

Among the nationalities represented, Americans remain in the lead, with 1.25 million hotel arrivals in Paris Ile-de-France over the first half, followed by the British (982,000) and Germans (592,000). The Chinese rank fourth, with 543,000 hotel arrivals over the period.

But despite the slowdown in the growth of Asian visitor numbers, hotel bookings of tourists from China, who have a strong purchasing power, grew 5.4 percent compared to 17.8 percent for the whole of 2017.

The figures are based on hotel arrivals, and don’t take into account airb’n’b bookings. The government’s goal is to reach 100 million foreign visitors by 2020, up from 87 million last year.

Staff have been hard at work at the school since the middle of August, preparing for the new term. More than 640 students are enrolled at ISM, which first opened its doors in September 1994, at 12 Quai Antoine 1, with just 34 pupils.

One of the landmark events in the history of the school was the expansion into the former Yacht Club, at 16 Quai Antoine 1, in September, 2015, to house the Early Years children, a cafeteria for the entire school and a rooftop playground.
