Down at home to Marseille, Monaco lick their wounds

As the dust settles from Sunday night’s home defeat against Olympique Marseille, a certain amount of concern is settling in for Monaco’s soccer fans. The late goal from former Monaco player Valère Germain meant that the Monegasques have won only a single game out of four games in the new season of French Ligue 1.

While Germain’s 89th minute header sealed Monaco’s fate, this was all the more bitter because the Monegasques had been ahead almost unexpectedly, two to one, in the 54th minute after a goal from Falcao.

Rudi Garcia, OM’s coach, was eager to play up the scale of his team’s victory: “It’s a great win against a team that plays in the Champions League and wants to finish on the podium.”

Yuri Tielemans, mid-fielder at AS Monaco, underlined how much needs to be done:

“Four points in four games, it’s not enough, we have to get back to work, we have a young group, a lot of new players, when we play as a team, it’s easier. It’s going to be difficult, but we have to do better. get there.”

Certainly the home loss will do nothing to raise Monaco’s morale as the Champions League starts in earnest on September 18. Monaco captain Radamel Falcao had approached Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash with Marseille as a practice run for Champions League qualification.

With seven points from four games, Marseille have pushed Monaco out of second place and trail leaders Paris Saint Germain, who beat Nimes 4-2 on Saturday, by five points.

Former US basket coach consults in Monaco

Basketball

Craig Neal, the former University of New Mexico men’s basketball coach, has been named as temporary Director of Basketball for AS Monaco. However, the consulting post will be only for a matter of weeks, he said. It’s a short-term, consulting situation, he said, adding that he is really enjoying it.

“It is all the youth programmes in Monaco from U21 to U9 years old (level teams),” Neal told the Albuquerque Journal.

“I am… volunteering my time and consulting (with) them on how to build youth programmes for the country.”

Neal is still getting paid $1 million by UNM through the end of March 2019, as part of a 24-month buyout clause he had when he was fired on March 31, 2017. That sum is reduced if he takes another coaching job. He has over the past year and a half spent much of his time away from coaching getting to watch his son his son, Eldorado High and UNM graduate Cullen Neal, finish his college career and now he will be able to see him start his professional career, the Journal reports.

The Prince’s Government and the elected National Council are cooperating in introducing a new law to protect the interests of employees who work night shifts in the Principality.

The bill is expected to go before the National Council within a few weeks for a vote. The bill was originally proposed by the National Council, before the Government decided it would be worthwhile to be associated with its preparation and introduction.

Didier Gamerdinger, Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs, said that there are around 9,500 employees in Monaco who are involved in working at night, and the new legislative bill “was worth working on.” The new bill is more ‘ambitious’ than the original proposals, and has been devised with the input of social partners, employees and employers.
