Prince leads call for better communications in Arctic

Oulu, Finland

Arctic leaders and Prince Albert of Monaco have called for better connectivity in areas in and around the Arctic Circle, claiming this will improve quality of life and economic opportunities, while also allowing the region to meet challenges including climate change, techradar.com reports.

The call forms part of the declaration of the second ever UArctic Conference in Oulu, Finland, organised by the University of the Arctic – a consortium of more than 200 separate member institutions.

The conference seeks to encourage collaboration around a series of common goals, such as education, gender equality, and the arts, as well as on environmental issues.

Better connectivity will not only allow the scientific community to be more productive and collaborative, but also encourage the better sharing of data. Although Finland, Sweden and Norway enjoy relatively good fixed and mobile coverage in their northern extremities, the same cannot be said for other parts of the region, claimed the leader of the UArctic Council.

“Connectivity is not only reserved to certain latitudes – it has to come to this part of the world and it can only help the people of the Arctic,” said Prince Albert. “It can (deliver) all kinds of information, including on environmental issues.”

Monaco’s Prince has taken a keen interest in climate change and has made significant donations to projects in the region through his charitable foundation. Aside from information sharing, it is thought that 5G networks and the Internet of Things (IoT) can play significant roles in collecting this data.

“Even though I’m from the south, what is happening in the north and the arctic is extremely important for the whole world,” he continued. “People are suffering because of these changes and we feel it’s necessary to protect their livelihood.”

The British Association of Monaco has announced the date and venue for the HMRC roadshow visiting Monaco.

The British tax authority will hold its public meetings on September 6 at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel from 10:00 until 12 noon for a general overview, and from 14:00 until 16:00 on the same day for a more detailed session. This is a HMRC event and admission is free.

As previously reported by Monaco Life, the HMRC visit is intended to draw attention to the legislative changes to Corporate Criminal Offences (CCO) and the HMRC  ’Requirement to Correct’ ( RTC) that legally obliges taxpayers who have undeclared UK tax liabilities in respect of offshore interests to put things right by telling HMRC about outstanding tax due by September 30, 2018.  This gives taxpayers the opportunity to put their affairs in order before tougher penalties come into force in October 2018, says HMRC.

BAM will be holding its first cocktail after the summer break on Thursday, September 13, at L’Oliveraie, Place des Moulins, from 18:00 until 20:00. The cocktail event on September 27 will take place at a venue to be announced at a later date.

The European Road Traffic Competition, sponsored in part by the Automobile Club of Monaco, has the support of the Directorate of National Education of Youth and Sports and the Public Security Directorate: it takes place each year in a different city of Europe.

Young competitors will have to pass practical tests in cycling, including maneuverability and respect for road signs, as well as theoretical tests based on observation and the dangers of the road. A drawing contest on the theme is unveiled at the last moment, closing the competition.

After the announcement of the results and the presentation of medals, an evening event will be held in honour of all the participants.
