Security features upgraded at schools and nurseries

The Public Buildings Maintenance Service has been busy over the summer period upgrading the security of Monaco’s 13 schools and 5 crèches.

The work has been undertaken as part of the regular maintenance undertaken when the children and staff are absent.

This year, the focus has been on installing opaque burglar-resistant films to doors and windows, and fitting burglar alarms where appropriate.

Another focus has been on improving energy savings, with the gradual installation of LED lighting and energy meters, plus additional insulation.

By the end of November, 2018, nearly 100 photovoltaic panel modules will be installed on the roof of the École des Révoires. This clean energy will be used in the school and will cover up to 20 percent of its needs.

Monaco schools to emphasise digital transition

Conference on the return to school - Sept 2018

Patrice Cellario, Minister of the Interior, has presented the main themes of the new school year while speaking alongside Isabelle Bonnal, Director of National Education, in the new school in the Stella building on Tuesday, September 4.

He said that education remains a priority for the Prince’s Government, “anxious to prepare young people for their future as adults and to take their places in the outside world.”

Among changes planned are adding second-year programmes for the new baccalaureate which will be introduced in 2021. More emphasis will be placed on Monaco’s history and teacher training will be strengthened “on all levels.”

Computer coding and digital transition will also be enhanced, and more emphasis will be placed on sports provision. A new playing field, to be named after Hereditary Prince Jacques will be inaugurated at Devens, with the facility earmarked for the use of football and rugby associations.

A total of 5.749 students, supervised by 846 staff, including 509 teachers, will return to school on Monday, September 10.

Down at home to Marseille, Monaco lick their wounds

Monaco FC

As the dust settles from Sunday night’s home defeat against Olympique Marseille, a certain amount of concern is settling in for Monaco’s soccer fans. The late goal from former Monaco player Valère Germain meant that the Monegasques have won only a single game out of four games in the new season of French Ligue 1.

While Germain’s 89th minute header sealed Monaco’s fate, this was all the more bitter because the Monegasques had been ahead almost unexpectedly, two to one, in the 54th minute after a goal from Falcao.

Rudi Garcia, OM’s coach, was eager to play up the scale of his team’s victory: “It’s a great win against a team that plays in the Champions League and wants to finish on the podium.”

Yuri Tielemans, mid-fielder at AS Monaco, underlined how much needs to be done:

“Four points in four games, it’s not enough, we have to get back to work, we have a young group, a lot of new players, when we play as a team, it’s easier. It’s going to be difficult, but we have to do better. get there.”

Certainly the home loss will do nothing to raise Monaco’s morale as the Champions League starts in earnest on September 18. Monaco captain Radamel Falcao had approached Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash with Marseille as a practice run for Champions League qualification.

With seven points from four games, Marseille have pushed Monaco out of second place and trail leaders Paris Saint Germain, who beat Nimes 4-2 on Saturday, by five points.

Former US basket coach consults in Monaco

Basketball

Craig Neal, the former University of New Mexico men’s basketball coach, has been named as temporary Director of Basketball for AS Monaco. However, the consulting post will be only for a matter of weeks, he said. It’s a short-term, consulting situation, he said, adding that he is really enjoying it.

“It is all the youth programmes in Monaco from U21 to U9 years old (level teams),” Neal told the Albuquerque Journal.

“I am… volunteering my time and consulting (with) them on how to build youth programmes for the country.”

Neal is still getting paid $1 million by UNM through the end of March 2019, as part of a 24-month buyout clause he had when he was fired on March 31, 2017. That sum is reduced if he takes another coaching job. He has over the past year and a half spent much of his time away from coaching getting to watch his son his son, Eldorado High and UNM graduate Cullen Neal, finish his college career and now he will be able to see him start his professional career, the Journal reports.
