Details about this installation:

  • 161 m2 of photovoltaic panels were laid.
  • Installed on the roof with a double exposure north-west and south-east, they will allow optimal solar capture.
  • In order to avoid too much wind, the panels are laid with a slight inclination (10 °)
  • A screen placed in the hall of the School will allow students to visualize instant production, cumulation and CO2 avoided.
  • The average annual production, 32,000 kWh, will cover about 15% of the annual needs of the establishment.
  • 2.6 tons of CO2 equivalent per year will thus be avoided.

The Monaco Government and the Monegasque Electricity and Gas Company (SMEG) combined their skills with the creation, at the end of 2017, of Monaco Energies Renouvelables (MER). The Company’s mission is to seek investment and development opportunities in renewable energy projects abroad.

In line with this objective, Monaco Energies Renewables has just acquired eight photovoltaic parks totalling a production capacity of 39 MWpec, distributed in seven departments in the south of France.

“MER has the goal that Monaco will become one of the first states to have 100% green electricity production capacity, equivalent to the consumption of its territory,” said Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Government Counselor-Minister of Equipment, Environment and Urbanism. She adds: “If we are interested today in the development of photovoltaic plants, we are also thinking about the possibility of integrating hydropower, biogas and wind to control our energy supply costs.”

These acquired sites totaled 46,000 MWh / year, or about 9% of the electricity consumption of the Principality of Monaco. Thomas Battaglione, Managing Director of SMEG and Managing Director of MER, says: “SMEG, as an energy expert and operator, is working with the State of Monaco to bring its expertise in the renewable energy sector, identify better development opportunities and ensure the best possible operating efficiencies.”

On this occasion, the Councilor read a message from HSH Prince Albert II. The Sovereign announced that the Principality is joining the Breathelife campaign, jointly led by WHO, UN-Environment and the Coalition for Clean Air and Climate (CCPA) to mobilise cities and individuals to protect our health and the planet against the effects of air pollution, the implementation of which will be ensured by the Directorate of the Environment.

During this conference, Didier Gamerdinger also presented the commitments of the Principality in this global struggle. They will help improve and monitor air quality through, inter alia, new technologies and innovation, thereby helping to reduce the negative impacts of air pollution on health.

For several years now, the Princely Government has been implementing a strategy consistent with these objectives. The following commitments that were presented at this conference include:

  • a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality in 2050;
  • government financial assistance to encourage soft mobility;
  • reducing the tonnages of incinerated waste;
  • the establishment of an air quality monitoring network to ensure that the European limit values are respected and to reach those of the WHO by 2030;
  • a new hospital that will meet high energy performance and operate without environmental impacts.

An opportunity for the Government Counselor for Health to recall that “we must together accept the responsibility to maintain and improve health and sustainable human development for our youth and future generations. the Principality is committed and invites everyone to commit themselves.”

For example, Monaco, already involved in environmental initiatives, has confirmed its commitments to WHO in the area of health.
