Building Monaco’s urban agriculture

The concept of urban agriculture is sweeping across the globe, as major cities embrace not only the health and environmental benefits of gardening in a concrete landscape, but also the therapeutic spin-offs. Monaco is one such destination, thanks to the likes of Jessica Sbaraglia, who is infectiously passionate about bringing bountiful gardens to balconies and rooftops throughout the Principality. And the results so far? Well, take a look for yourself.

Jessica Sbaraglia, founder of Terre de Monaco

Terre de Monaco was created in 2016 by Jessica Sbaraglia to bring urban agriculture to the open grounds and rooftops in Monaco, particularly fruit and vegetable gardens that share the values of organics and permaculture.

So what is permaculture?

While conventional gardening tends to use a one-size-fits all method for growing food, permaculture is based on the concept of using perfect plants for the land, the climate, and each other. For example, says Jessica, basil has a smell that repels the pests that attack tomatoes. If you are planting lettuce and eggplant together, lettuce has a shorter crop life and when harvested will not interfere with the growth of eggplants. You can then have two crops on one piece of land.

This method also advocates cultural diversity, respect for the seasons, and obviously cultivation without the use of pesticides.

But why you Jessica?

“Four years ago, I was asking myself existential questions about life, when I visited my parents in Switzerland and their family vegetable garden which they were lovingly cultivating. It is thanks to them that I know the true taste of untreated vegetables that have matured fully and naturally. I realised that the earth not only brought me food, but took care of me. The act of gardening is soothing and meditative, it’s like recognising a part of your ancestral yourself.

Starting Terre de Monaco was difficult, like any pioneering project, but when we find what drives us, we obviously do not give up at the first hurdle.”

And this is what Terre de Monaco has achieved to date:

Currently in Monaco, they operate 1,600m2 of market gardening which produced around 2.5 tons of vegetables last year alone.

“Who would have thought it?” laughs Jessica, “A tiny country of two square kilometres, of which 80% is concrete, and which hasn’t really experienced agriculture for 150 years!”

“We grow mostly ‘old’ or ‘forgotten’ vegetables, ones that we do not necessarily see in markets these days as they are often less productive, but very tasty. It is important for us to find diversity on the plate and thereby safeguard the inheritance of seeds.”

Gardens can be custom made for individuals (-100m2) for a private or corporate balcony, with advice and plants available for any time of year. For example, Terre de Monaco maintains a 30m2 vegetable garden at the Prince Albert II Foundation Monaco, and employees get to enjoy the vegetables.

In addition, there is:

– a 400 m2 garden at the Monte-Carlo Bay hotel, where the vegetables are used in the gastronomic Blue Bay restaurant,

– a 250 m2 garden at the Princess Grace Hospital of Monaco, where the vegetables are used for the hospital kitchen,

– a 450m2 garden at the Odeon tower, as well as 50 hens and 10 bee hives, with all produce going to the residents of the tower,

– and a 500m2 garden on the roof of Ruscino, where the produce is sold to people in the building.

But there’s more…

There are 10 schools in Monaco offering cultivation courses as well as class outings to vegetable gardens, thanks to Terre de Monaco. “It is important to transmit this information to children,” says Jessica, “so that they are aware of the origins and taste of their food.”

As an urban farmer, they participate in the recycling of straw bales after the Monaco Jumping event, they utilise tortoise manure from the Oceanographic Museum, and they even re-use wooden wine crates as portable vegetable gardens.

In early 2019, the started working with the psychiatric ward at the Princess Grace Hospital introducing a therapeutic kitchen garden for teens in trouble. “The results are very positive, and we love to see their evolution,” smiles Jessica.

“As you know, urban agriculture is an ecosystem with multiple functions that can affect many people,” Jessica says in summary. “We hope to contribute to the health of people’s stomachs and their psyche, while respecting our planet. It’s a common sense philosophy that can be applied at home, because it is simply land, and it’s time to start caring!”

A National Plan to House Monegasques has been officially launched by Prince Albert II. The ambitious project means that over the next 15 years, the number of state-owned apartments will almost double in the Principality.

The plan, titled Plan national pour le logement des Monégasques, was launched at the Ministry of State on Monday 11th March in the presence of Minister of State Serge Telle and Stéphane Valeri, President of the National Council. It follows an announcement by Prince Albert on Monaco’s National Day in November.

“Housing Monegasques is, for me, a national cause, an absolute priority,” said the Prince. “My Government has worked consistently for years on this.”

The Minister of State detailed the various aspects of the ambitious plan, which will increase by 43% the number of state housing apartments by the year 2034 to reach 4,548. “Our ambition is to allow more than three quarters of households an opportunity to have a state-owned apartment, with the aim of meeting everyone’s needs,” said Serge Telle, who described it as an “historic moment for the Principality.”

Statistics institute IMSEE predicts that the number of Monegasques will increase from 9,300 currently to around 10,770 in 2033.

The objective is to meet, on the basis of in-depth studies by IMSEE, the forseeable needs of the Monegasque population in the next 15 years.

The first stage will form part of operations already approved by the National Council in the 2019 Budget – extending blocks at the Jardins d’Apolline. The additional figure will equate to an average of 122 new apartments per year.

Yachting and Monaco – behind the scenes

The Monaco Economic Board was one of a number of Monegasque companies to head to the Dubai Yacht Show recently to represent the Principality and drive investment to our corner of the globe. Monaco Life sat down with Justin Highman, Director of Monaco Invest, to learn more about why yacht shows are so important and how the MEB is shaping the Monaco of tomorrow.

In the presence of HSH Prince Albert II and H.E. Mr Majid Saif Al Ghurair, Chairman of the CCI Dubai, MEB Chairman Michel Dotta and CCI Dubai President-CEO H.E. Mr Hamad Buamim signed a Memorandum of Understanding during a visit by HSH the Sovereign Prince to Dubai, 26-29 November.

Can you share with us what took you to Dubai and what did you achieve there?

The Monaco Economic Board (MEB) is quite a young organisation that was set up in 1999 to promote Monaco as an international business hub, with a dynamic and diversified economy.

Our missions are to attract new businesses, new entrepreneurs to bring their economic expertise and spheres and set up business activities within the Principality of Monaco, and to support the development of Monaco companies on a local and international level. More precisely we are looking for investors in the fields of innovation, new technologies and sustainable development as we believe these are vital fields in the years to come combined with the sectors which already have depth and strength such as finance and insurance, corporate services, hospitality and retail, real estate and construction, and international trade.

As you know, space is an issue in Monaco so we are targeting companies who may not need much space to develop but who need talents, modern infrastructures and an international hub for their business.

We hope that with a strengthened Monegasque presence in Dubai, we are able to build and develop our image of a modern, well connected hub at the heart of Europe. This is the 2nd year running that we are participating in The Dubai International Boat Show with cluster yachting Monaco and Monégasque entities. We were nine participating companies this year, as opposed to seven last year.

We also organised the Monaco Invest first trade mission last November in Dubai to build business ties and relationships in all sectors in Dubai and beyond in the Gulf region with a signature of MoU with Dubai chamber.

Moreover, we will participate with a large Monaco pavilion of 1,700 square meters at World Expo in Dubai from October 2020 for six months, so that we continue promoting Monaco from all perspectives.

Cluster Yachting Booth

Singapore is next on the list, can you tell us more about that?

Monaco Invest will participate at the Singapore Yacht Show for the third year running. Singapore, just like Dubai, is an international hub that we want to connect with and develop strong business ties.

There are already many economic exchanges between Monaco and Asia in the areas of consulting, financial engineering, luxury goods, real estate, tourism, yachting and environment.

Monaco offers Asian entrepreneurs the opportunity to benefit from a prestigious, stable and safe location in Europe as well as being a buoyant economic hub at the heart of Europe.

Asia, and in particular places such as Singapore, are compatible with Monaco for several reasons. Besides the size of the countries, we are talking of city states that have a vibrant economy with a talented workforce that is well connected to their regions.

Some sectors such as financial services, international trade and tourism are also alike and thriving. With space as an issue we are looking for companies in less need of square meters but curating high valued jobs.

We believe in the connections that can thrive between our economies just like for Singapore.

This is also why we also help set up MonacoTech, a public-private venture which offers 20 start-ups the chance to grow, get funding and benefit from what its director calls “Brand Monaco”. Headed by the Monaco Government and Xavier Niel, owner of Monaco Telecom, it is housed in an 820 square meter office that holds 50 desks and two ‘fab labs’ (rooms with access to modern means of invention, according to the MIT project on which the term was founded).

The MEB ultimate aim is to create new links, relationships and bridges between Singapore and Monaco, as we believe in compatibility and that new businesses and ventures from both areas can benefit from this.

The Monaco Yacht Show is only a few short months away, what news about that event can you share with us?

From the very beginning we have been partners of the Monaco Yacht Show, the world’s largest super yacht event taking place every last week of September in Port Hercule.

We are partnered with the Monaco Yacht Show on two events. The Monaco Yacht Summit is an opportunity for entrepreneurs and yachting entities to learn from the very best and network in a unique environment.

Meanwhile, China Night is a very prestigious evening with people coming from Asia and willing to learn more about Monaco. The event is always a good opportunity for us to meet business people interested in the economy of Monaco.

Gaelle Tallarida, CEO of Monaco Yacht Show, was with us like always at Dubai International Boat Show 2019.

Michel Dotta, MEB Chairman

Can you explain for us how the MEB supports the Cluster Yachting Monaco and yachting in general?

The MEB has supported the Cluster Yachting Monaco since its creation three years ago. It is an association regrouping over 80 entities from Monaco and which has participated at numerous yachting events around the world.

The Cluster Yachting aims to provide a platform for dialogue and a united body to decision-makers, encourage interaction, implement synergies between professionals, and embrace industry-related activities to give fresh impetus to local businesses. The purpose is to keep Monaco as the world’s “Capital of Yachting.”

Yachting is an important and growing sector in Monaco.  With more than 300 companies and 1,555 employees it is the 4th largest industry in the Principality.

Did you know for example that among owners of the world’s 100 largest yachts, 24 are members of the Yacht Club of Monaco? Monaco really is a must for all enthusiasts of the yachting sector!

We fully support the Cluster Yachting Monaco by participating in their workshop in order to promote, develop, regulate and communicate on the sector. We also take part, just like we did for the Singapore Yacht Show, in the various events they organise to promote Monaco as a Yachting Capital.

Venturi claims first Formula E win

A post-race penalty for Envision Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird has given Edoardo Mortara victory in Hong Kong, the first for Monaco’s Venturi in Formula E.

Edoardo Mortara after his win in Hong Kong

Bird crossed the line first after a race-long duel with DS Techeetah’s Andre Lotterer, which came to a head on the penultimate lap when the Envision Virgin Racing driver made contact with the rear of Lotterer’s car during an attempted move for the lead.

A few corners later Lotterer’s right-rear tyre let go and he dropped to 14th and last on the final lap.

After the race the stewards gave Bird a five-second time penalty, dropping him to sixth.

“The driver of car 2 had a direct hit with the right rear tyre of car 36 resulting in an immediate puncture,” read the stewards’ report.

“It is acknowledged that the track was damp in certain areas, however car 36 left more than a car width to the inside. As a result, we find that the driver of car 2 was predominantly to blame for the incident.”

Bird’s point for fastest lap means he retains the lead in the drivers’ championship by one point over Mahindra’s Jerome d’Ambrosio, who was part of a red flag-inducing incident between team-mate Pascal Wehrlein and Geox Dragon’s Felipe Nasr.

Virgin also has the lead in the teams’ championship by 11 points over Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler, who jumped Mahindra to second in the standings.

Mortara and Venturi’s maiden win

The penalty elevates Mortara to the top spot, making it his and Venturi’s first win in FE.

The Italian-Swiss driver came up from sixth on the grid after receiving a three-place grid penalty for failing to slow to 50kph under red flag conditions in qualifying.

He passed Audi’s Lucas di Grassi and the two Venturi-customer HWA Racelab cars of Gary Paffett and polesitter Stoffel Vandoorne before closing in on the lead battle in the final laps and securing second after Lotterer received his puncture.

di Grassi is now classified second with Robin Frijns promoted to the podium. Daniel Abt is fourth while Felipe Massa, who needed suspension repairs on his Venturi during the red flag period after contact on the opening lap of the race, scored his best FE finish in fifth.
