World Environment Day 2019

Back in 1972, the United Nations declared 5th June to be World Environment Day. Now, every year a different aspect of the natural world is focused upon and in 2019 that focus is on the air we breathe.

Air pollution affects us all, directly or indirectly, whether we know it or not. It is estimated that a shocking 9 out of 10 people breathe polluted air. Add to that the roughly seven million people who actually die from it yearly, and it is made clear what an epic problem air pollution is worldwide.

This year’s theme for World Environment Day looks at what individuals can do to change their behaviour to lessen the amount of emissions we generate. Prince Albert has joined in the efforts on behalf of the Principality by becoming part of the Breathelife campaign, sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UN-run Coalition for Cleaner Air and Climate (CCAC). The programme educates the public on the effects that air pollution has on all living creatures. It is a call to arms to make changes to improve air quality from a grassroots level.

Monaco has been keeping an eye on air quality daily since 1995, gauging the levels of pollutants such as ozone, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide. In 2015, a collaboration was created with AtmoSud, PACA’s air quality monitoring association which provides forecasts of air quality in the region. Additionally, as a member of the Smart City programme, the Principality will soon be installing micro-sensors that assess air quality at public bus shelters.

In an effort to cut down on emissions, CAM buses will be free on Wednesday 5th. So, give the car a rest, take the bus and help be part of the solution.

Monaco unveils new FlySafe programme

Monaco is the first Sovereign State to get on board with an innovative new unmanned aircraft management system. Called FlySafe, it will recognise and follow drone flights that have been authorised to fly in the Principality.

The unmanned traffic management system (UTM) will go online on 17th June, thus bringing Monegasque Civil Aviation officially into a digital age. A live “practice run” was organised on 3rd June to take a package by drone from Monaco’s Heliport to a ship in the port of Cap d’Ail. In attendance were a number of Monegasque government officials as well as representatives from the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the French DGAC, the European Aviation Safety Agency and Eurocontrol.

“You know how much the Government is committed to the digital transformation of its ecosystem, well mobility is at the heart of our attractiveness and quality of life,” said Monaco’s Secretary General of the Department of Facilities, Environment and Urbanism Samy Touati during his speech.

“Drones, and other electric aircraft, are a turning point, an opportunity for our energy transition. There are so many reasons today to celebrate a project moving with these strategies, promoted by the Government of the Sovereign Prince. With this tool, we are preparing the future.”

More than 15 years after the Red and White’s epic run in the Champions League and Greece’s victory at Euro 2004, the heroes of those two teams met Monday afternoon in Lefkada, Greece, for a charity match initiated and organised by the family of the President of AS Monaco Dmitry Rybolovlev. The match was for the benefit of the local charity ‘Faros’.

Coached by Leonardo Jardim, the Monaco Legends were led by Ludovic Giuly and several players from 2004, including Greek national Akis Zikos. Roma, Givet, Squillaci, El Fakiri, Cisse and Carole also featured, as well as former players who wore the jersey diagonally including Carvalho, Gerard, Piquionne and François Modesto.

The Monaco Legends won against the Euro 2004 Champions in Portugal (4-3).

Chevanton scored a hat-trick and assisted on a goal to captain Ludovic Giuly, who also tallied an assist. Karagounis scored twice for Greece.

This gala event, broadcast live on Greek television, was played in front of nearly 2,500 people in the Lefkada Stadium. All proceeds have been donated to Faros, which works for disadvantaged families in the region.

Last year, coach Leonardo Jardim went to the island for a training camp with former Greek club player Akis Zikos. Two years ago, it was his captain, Falcao, who came to give valuable advice to the young players of the local club. Vice President Oleg Petrov kicked off the meeting.

Boosting business relations with small states

The Monaco Economic Board has participated in the first Small States Business Forum in Becici. The event was attended by HSH Prince Albert II and organised on the sidelines of the 18th Small States of Europe games held in Montenegro.

They are both coastal nations, enjoying a mild climate and mountainous interior. But these are not the only similarities between Monaco and Montenegro. Business links also exist between the two countries: in 2013 Montenegro’s Chamber of Commerce and the MEB signed an agreement, then in 2017 Monaco hosted a delegation of Montenegrin entrepreneurs.

Opening the Business Forum on Wednesday 29th May, Prince Albert highlighted synergies between the different states and their respective economies.

For Montenegro, its Economy Minister Dragica Sekulić took the opportunity to outline her country’s advantages, followed by Chamber of Commerce President Vlastimir Golubović who stressed Montenegrin areas of expertise.

Each country then had the chance to present their strengths and business opportunities, including innovation projects. As well as Monaco and Montenegro, representatives from Andorra, Liechtenstein and San Marino took the floor before the forum ended on a constructive round table discussion.

As for the MEB, its Executive Director General Guillaume Rose, and Monaco Invest Director Justin Highman, spoke about the economy and the MonacoTech centre of excellence, with emphasis on the  Extended Monaco – Smart Principality programme.

Several agreements were signed in the presence of Prince Albert, including a cooperation agreement with MEB counterparts in the Small States Chambers of Commerce and the Montenegro Chamber of Commerce, before Interior Minister Patrice Cellario signed a Double Taxation Treaty with Montenegro.

Participating countries can now move forward to develop closer ties with the Principality.

The next forum will be in two years’ time in Andorra.

Terre and Métamorphoses: an exhibit by Philippe Pastor

Monaco’s own Philippe Pastor is exhibiting his unique environmentally aware works from at the Monaco Modern’Art gallery. The artist’s paintings and sculpture are tributes to nature as well as cautionary tales denouncing the world’s lack of care for our delicately balanced ecosystems.

Painting by Philippe Pastor

Mr Pastor uses natural pigments in his works, in keeping with his philosophies, and uses other elements from nature such as leaves, resin, earth or pine needles to create texture and depth.

His personal vision is evident in the works, and is at once calming and disturbing when knowing the context and undercurrents, and his thoughts on how man disadvantageously interacts with the planet. f

The exhibition will run until 26th July. For more information, visit www.monacomodernart.mc or www.philippepastor.com
