Monaco’s space initiative has a new partner

Monaco’s contribution to the future of space travel and a new space economy will be explored at the next ‘Pioneers and innovators of our time’ event, organised by the Embassy of Monaco in Washington. The embassy has now teamed up with Day One Events to deliver the innovative conference in Monaco, which focusses on humanity and space exploration.

The organisers of Day One Events, a summit for the digital age designed for global decision makers and “doers”, and the Embassy of Monaco in Washington, D.C., have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to incorporate the embassy’s highly successful space initiative ‘Pioneers and innovators of our time’ (PIOT), into the framework of future Day One Events.

Eric Stallmer, the president of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, the world’s largest trade organisation dedicated to promoting the development of commercial spaceflight, made the announcement during the 2019 Day One Events program on behalf of Monaco’s ambassador to the United States and Canada, Her Excellency Maguy Maccario Doyle, and Denis Jacquet, founder of Day One Events.

In announcing the partnership, Mr. Stallmer outlined topics to be covered in future sessions including the new space economy, the role of public-private partnerships in low-Earth orbit space stations, space tourism and related industries, the future of healthcare in space, and how satellite technology and space exploration could be the key to addressing climate change.

Dr. Ilhami Aygun, president of Space Systems International Monaco and a panelist in the 2016 and 2018 PIOT events, also addressed the gathering to speak about MonacoSAT2, the second Monaco satellite to be launched in 2022-2023, in follow up to the successful launch in April 2015 of Monaco’s first telecommunications satellite.

“This new partnership, along with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation-USA and Monaco’s “space agency” SSI-MonacoSat, will focus on the relationship between humanity and space, the economics and commercial opportunities of space travel, as well as its challenges, for the protection of our planet,” said Maccario Doyle. “We hope to elaborate on, and answer, the age-old question, does the future of our planet depend on space? Our goal is also to inspire young people to follow careers in science and technology and will feature an informative educational component for our youth.”

Prince receives honorary doctorate

In recognition of HSH Prince Albert II’s tireless dedication to environmental causes, Comenius University in Bratislava awarded him with an honorary doctorate degree.

The degree was given for the Sovereign’s actions in the fields of protecting natural and cultural heritages and for his efforts with regard to climate change in conjunction with his foundation, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, whose goals are to support environmental protection using science and education.

Upwards of €55 million has been donated to the causes he has championed thus far and include deforestation, climate change, endangered species defence, managing the loss of biodiversity, ocean protection and identifying and using alternative energy sources.

The university’s Natural Sciences Department signed an accord with the Principality this year, agreeing to work together on activities promoting the protection of the environment.

Comenius, a Slovakia-based university, was founded in 1919, back when the region was part of communist held Czechoslovakia. Today, it is the largest university in the country and is currently celebrating its 100th year.

Boasting more than 80 stands, attractions and amusements, the annual Monaco Fun Fair is anticipated by children, and kids at heart, all over the region.

Rides include favourites such as the Fun House, a massive Ferris wheel, giant swings, a merry-go-round, a roller coaster ride and a haunted house in the spirit of Halloween.

In addition to the rides and games, delicious and fun food options are on offer such as waffles, crepes and candy floss, as well as more savoury choices such as hamburgers and fries.

Traffic alerts around the Principality

The Principality’s public works has two major projects occurring simultaneously on Larvotto Boulevard and at the entry to the city at Jardin Exotique, with traffic diversions in place.

With the overhaul of Larvotto underway, and the future construction of 336 public housing units, the Principality has deemed it necessary to make some alterations to the traffic patterns of Larvotto Boulevard. In order to create the least amount of disruption, the following traffic patterns will be in effect until works are completed.

From 07:30 to 11:30 traffic will be allowed in the direction Menton to Monaco, to facilitate the flow into the Principality.

From 11:30 to the following day at 07:30, traffic will be allowed in the direction Monaco to Menton, to facilitate the flow out of the Principality.

Saturdays and Sundays, as well as public holidays, traffic will be allowed permanently in the direction Monaco to Menton. Exceptionally, work will be suspended from the evening of 20th December until the morning of 2nd January 2020. The holiday routing will remain in effect for the duration of this period.

Residents living on Larvotto Boulevard will still have access to their homes, though it must be noted that cars entering and leaving both public and private car parks must respect the ordained traffic directives.

In addition to the Larvotto plans, there will be new gas, water, electricity and telecommunication lines laid near the entry of the city at the Jardin Exotique.

The layout of the lines have been changed to divert the current lines that run under the road and will support future coverage in the area. To minimise traffic disturbances, the ground marking was carried out at night, so that no traffic alterations are currently previewed.

The new lines will support the construction of a new public parking structure housing more than 1,800 cars and 12 coaches, a postal logistics centre that will intake up to 5,000 parcels per day, 5,000m2 of office space and a 50 unit residential housing block.

Annual Cash & Rocket visit to the Sumbandila Scholarship Trust in South Africa

Last week, six Cash & Rocket ladies and I, Julie Brangstrup, travelled to Johannesburg in South Africa then embarked on a long drive to the province of Limpopo bordering Botswana and Zimbabwe to visit Sumbandila, one of the three charities we support.

The focus of this year’s visit was to award five new, full scholarships to five amazingly bright children that have gone through extensive testing and achieved incredible results to gain their award. Each year, Sumbandila tests 400 children and their full scholarship will support a child’s education from age 12 to 14 all the way through University. The scholarship requires them to leave home and become weekly boarders at the Sumbandila site and provides everything for them from bed linen, blankets, toiletries, clothes, uniforms, books, transport back and forward, healthy strong nutritional food and a well-balanced pastoral and academic education, which I can confidently say is comparable to the standard of education my own children have received in the UK. It’s a truly immersive experience for the children who not only blossom academically but are given the broader life skills and outlook to allow them to utilise that education in the real world.

Cash & Rocket has supported Sumbandila since 2013 and has, throughout the years, awarded scholarships to hundreds of children. Furthermore, we have built a permanent school facility, provided transportation, clothing and educational materials for children and housing for our boarders and more recently our university students.

When we go and give the news to the students that have been awarded the scholarship it is just incredible – all the hard work we do throughout the year with Cash & Rocket is captured in that moment. The kids we have helped are all incredible in their individual ways, often bewildered and humbled by the experience and the opportunity, but always hungry to take the chance they’ve been given.

Each year I have brought one of my children with me when visiting the charities we support. I want them to see and understand what I do and why it’s so important for all of us to give back. While it’s a full-on trip and the schedule is seriously demanding, it’s an incredible adventure. I feel lucky to be able to give my kids the opportunity to meet these children, many of whom are their own age from completely different backgrounds, and to realise how lucky they are to have grown up with a roof over their head, food on the table three times a day and both parents alive and caring for them.

Six women, all participants from the Cash & Rocket Tour 2019, and their children followed the trip this year and I believe it was a genuinely life changing experience for mothers and their children alike.

Sumbandila

Sumbandila aims to transform the lives of exceptional children from the backgrounds of extreme poverty. Through its educational scholarships and mentorship program, Sumbandila aims to create entrepreneurs and leaders who will one day make a significant contribution to their own communities and to Africa. So far, 287 students have received full residential scholarships and 232 have received the Saturday school program, but our goal is to have 350 full residential students on our program a year.

The Cash & Rocket Tour 2020

If you did not have a chance to come face to face with Cash & Rocket when 80 women in 40 red cars entered Monte Carlo back in June this year during our annual fundraising tour, let me give you a brief overview of what we’re all about.

Cash & Rocket is an international community of inspiring women who, through female solidarity, try to make a tangible change by raising money for charities worldwide. Every year, 80 women travel through four cities over four days to raise awareness and funding. Every year, 50% of the drivers are newcomers so the group keeps expanding and the network keeps getting wider.

How to get involved

If you would like to participate or become a sponsor of Cash & Rocket Tour 2020 now is the time to get involved by e-mailing info@cashandrocket.com
