Happy Birthday little Prince and Princess

Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella have recorded a special message on their fifth birthday, shared by their mother Princess Charlene for the world to enjoy.

Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella turned five on Tuesday 10th December. To celebrate, the duo recorded a video message for their grandmother, Lynette Humberstone Wittstock.

The twins look very cute in their party hats holding onto their party horns. “Grandma, it’s my birthday,” Jacques and Gabriella say in unison.

We can then hear Princess Charlene prompt her twins to say: “I miss you, I love you,” which Gabriella obliges while Jacques plays with his horn. Posting the video to her Instagram, the Princess wrote: “Birthday Message for Grandma.”

The Monegasque twins were born in 2014 at the Princess Grace Hospital. Gabriella was born two minutes before her brother.

The twins shared a special pre-birthday celebration together, traveling to Dubai last weekend with their mother, where they were treated to the Aquaventure Waterpark and swam with dolphins.

Monaco’s fight against deforestation

Monegasque companies who have joined the fight against deforestation and committed to reducing paper and wood usage have been rewarded at a special presentation. Led by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the ‘Wood Charter’ is showing real progress as more and more businesses come on board.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, together with the Prince’s Government, the MC2D and the IMEDD, welcomed the signatories of the Wood Charter, Charte sur le Bois, at an annual meeting on 5th December at the Hôtel Metropole Monte Carlo.

The Wood Charter invites Monegasque companies to promote the responsible use of wood and paper products, whether through their purchases or as part of their customer/supplier relationship. Nearly 60 Monegasque companies have already committed to the charter, the latest being Monaco Telecom.

“The fight against deforestation has always been part of the main issues facing mankind,” foundation Vice President Olivier Wenden told Monaco Life. “When the Prince’s foundation was launched in 2006 by His Serene Highness, one of our pillars of action was the fight against climate change. To address climate change, we must address the problem of forests. Deforestation is responsible for 15% of greenhouse gas emissions around the planet, has been causing the slaughter of biodiversity and, since the 1970s, has halved the population of animals.”

Five companies were honoured for achieving great results this year. They were packaging company Doro, Generation Planet which recycles ink cartridges, Monaco Mobilier Service, Tremplin Promotion, and VP International.

Meanwhile, guests were introduced to a web platform called the Common Cardboard initiative, which gives individuals and businesses an opportunity to share paper resources such as cardboard boxes, wooden pallets and paper, thereby extending the life of these products. In just a few months, more than 10,000 users in France have registered and posted ads on the free site.

“The current situation of forests around the world is tragic due to different reasons in each region: the palm oil industry in Asia, mining and war material-sourcing in Siberia, the vast issues in the Amazon… these are generating immediate benefits but have no long-term value,” said Mr. Wenden. “The foundation is currently running 10 projects around the world to fight against deforestation. The only continent where the percentage of forests is growing is Europe, so we need to be very attentive to that.”

Mr. Wenden says signing up to the Wood Charter is easy and its goals are realistic.

“The charter is made on incentives, for companies and individuals to move in the right direction to use sustainable wood production, from furniture and paper to construction materials,” said Mr. Wenden. “The objective is not to stop consuming, it’s to start consuming in the right way, to be conscious of wastage and, whenever possible, to recycle. You need to start these small daily changes to create a big river of change.

Mr. Wenden aims to have a total of 100 entities signed up to the Wood Charter by the end of 2020.

“Customers can feel this new trend coming,” he concluded. “We just need to actively plan for it and grow in number to make significant progress.”

Red Cross entities unite

Prince Albert has joined a gathering of the entire Red Cross Movement in Geneva for a conference that is taking place under the theme: ‘Acting today to shape the world of tomorrow’.

The Prince headed a Monegasque delegation composed of representatives of the government and the Monegasque Red Cross on Monday 9th December. He attended the opening ceremony of the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, which is currently being held in Geneva until 12th December.

The conference, held every four years, brings together the entire Red Cross movement, including national societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross (CICR), the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and members of the Geneva Conventions, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Through this conference, the various groups are able to reflect and make decisions on major humanitarian issues.

At the opening ceremony, HE Carole Lanteri, Ambassador of Monaco to the United Nations Office at Geneva, was elected Chairperson of the commission ‘IHL as an instrument for the protection of persons in armed conflicts’. “This election, a first for Monaco, is a sign of the movement’s confidence as a whole with regard to the Principality and recognition for its commitment to strengthening respect for international humanitarian law,” said the Prince’s government in a statement.

Together with Frédéric Platini, General Secretary of the Monaco Red Cross, Prince Albert also inaugurated a new building that will be used jointly by the Monaco Red Cross and the Burkina Faso Red Cross. The building is the former Monaco Pavilion from the World Expo Milan 2015. It has been entirely dismantled and reassembled at Loumbila, near Ouagadougou, and now serves as a multipurpose training centre for the Burkina Faso Red Cross.

On the sidelines of the conference, HSH Prince Albert II visited the new premises of the IFRC, which is celebrating its centenary this year, and met with the President of the Federation, Francesco Rocca, and his Secretary-General As Sy.

Roca Team wins seven straight

AS Monaco basketball is on a serious roll. The second ranked team won a crushing 101-75 victory against Elan Béarnais on Saturday night at the Palais des Sport in Pau.

The game started off with a bang as Kim Tillie nailed three three-pointers in a row, putting Roca team up 10-2 only four minutes into the game, forcing Pau to take a timeout to regroup. Rather than throwing them off their stride, the break seemed to pump Monaco up and Dee Bost, then Norris Cole, planted three-pointers.

Sasa Obradovic’s boys played aggressively, racking up eight faults in as many minutes, but they had a momentum that was virtually unstoppable. By the end of the first quarter, the score was a gobsmacking 38-6, and by halftime they had racked up more than 60 points putting them almost 30 points ahead of the struggling Pau.

The second half opening saw Tillie and Cole crushing the three-point shots, and the team kept a strong lead despite an attack by Elan Béarnais in the third quarter. By the end of the fourth quarter, they hit the century mark with a shot by Eric Buckner, only the second time this season they’ve done so, and sealed the deal.

With an amazing 21 points and eight assists by former two-time NBA Champion Norris Cole and another 17 by Kim Tillie, the Roca team had a night worth writing home about.

Already qualified for the Euro Cup Top 16, Roca team will play Wednesday night in Ulm and then back home to go up against Boulogne-Levallois at the weekend, whom they are tied with in the standings.
